Norman Mailer helped me understand the world outside my own. His "non-fiction novels" about things like boxing, war protests and political conventions were terrific reading, though not always easy. I wonder if the LDS folks will ever be known for their great novels? Then again, who actually reads BOOKS any more? I guess they'll have to be known for their great blogs.
Right,--about a hundred comments about George Osmond and none for a guy who captured more artistry in one sentence than a certain Utah family did in it's entire combined career. And this would be UTAH.
Norman Mailer was an overrated hack. If you'd have put George Osmond in NYC and Mailer in Utah, Osmond would have been even greater, and Mailer would have been a mailman.
I disagreed (strongly) with some of the things he did in his life, but there's no denying that he was a masterful writer who's work will live on for a long time. I am very saddened to hear of his death.
