She's 95, we can surely cut her some slack. Anyone that old that's still spry enough to get around deserves our applause, even if her age loosens her tongue a bit.

Kim

I don't give applause to anyone who's so closed-minded comment about what really happened behind these scandals. It was actually these people that cleaned up these mess from the past Olympics. No one said anything about it until someone from SLC Olympic blow their whistle on these scandals. GOOD JOB, SLC!!!

George

John would do well to leave his mother home.

Dave

Moms seem to say things that they think will help, but often hurt more. It's their instink to protect their children, but not always does it come out right...especially the older they get.

If she had been 45 instead of 95, would she be given a pass like she appears to be getting? Does a 95 year-old merit more "elbow room"? Did she let her true opinion out in an unguarded moment, or was her retraction heartfelt?

I don't know, but I'm certainly willing to err on the side of forgiveness. I'm not bothered over it.

Reality

God bless our Moms, they are beautiful; and so helpful. She earned my vote.

After those bigoted statements, I'm no longer voting for McCain.

Yes, because she is 95, she and John deserve a break. She's 95 years old! I agree with George. Leave mom at home.

Rob

Remember Newt Gingrich's Mom on Hillary? Good times.

Jerry

If she were 85, I would have to be upset. She is 95. I am not upset.

Why is it that everyone feels the need to put Mitt Romney's faith as an issue.I do not hear anyone's else's faith being bashed in the media day in and day out. Does this women even know any Mormons or just the negative comments made by the media? As some one who attended the Olympic Games in Salt lake City i can tell you it was a once in a lifetime experience, a childhood dream come true & 98% of the expeirence for us was positive & the 2% that wasn't had nothing to do with Mormons. A big thank you to SLC for putting on an amazing event.
back to Mitt - look at him for what he stands for - how he will be of beneift to our country, stop dragging his faith thorugh the mud!

Good for Roberta. Whether or not her opinion is based on fact, she's speaking out. Most 95-year-olds would feel stifled. I'm still not voting for McCain (or any Republican), but I love his Mom!

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. John, you should have left mom at home. While I never intended to vote for Mitt, I thought you'd be a good choice ... until now.

Very interesting that the whole Olympic scandal comes back to Salt Lake when this whole bribery thing had been going on for decades. That's how any city got to be a host city for the Olympics--bribery. They all did it. One city just got upset when they didn't get the games. And some people turn it into a Mormon thing. Unbelievable!

"As far as the [Atlanta] thing, he's a [black] and the [blacks] of [Atlanta] had caused that scandal. And to clean that up, again, it's not a subject." That's offensive. or if it was catholics and boston. how come it's ok to throw mormons under the bus? how come Gordon B. as the acting head of the national association for the advancement of mormon people isn't out pounding the pavement demanding an apology? you know sharpton would be.

Bill

So is it all of the people of Salt Lake that caused the Olympic scandal or just "Those Mormons" that caused the scandal...Apparently McCain isn't getting the campaign donations out of Salt Lake that he would like...guess all the donation money was used for the IOC.

Mothers off the cuff comments... $0.02
Candidates disowning his mothers comments and
Campaign staffs well thought out spin that still manages to offend...Priceless

Joe Moe

For those who want to peg this on McCain, did you see the actual footage? As soon as she started the comment, he had an eyebrow raised. Out of respect, he let her finish, but the words were scarcely out of her mouth when he said, "Those are not my views."

Note, he did not wait for a backlash. He did not wait to consult with speech writers. Unlike some politicians, he did not let the comments earn some points with some people, like it (unfortunately) would have, and then later "retract." He IMMEDIATELY and PUBLICLY disagreed with her.

Those who hold this against McCain are just being reactionary.

Hilarious!

I'm a Mormon and I'll vote for Mitt if he gets the nomination, but that's not what's interesting about this story to me. Rather, it's just an hilarious illustration of the findings of a studt that's been getting press in national publications, recently. The study found that many, many people literally lose the ability to self-censor their thoughts before they become unintentionally thoughtless comments. We've all heard older people make such proclamations, but we've always dismissed it as the crotchety opinion of a grouch. Articles quote such examples as, "Do you ever hear from that nice young man who dumped you, dear?," and this whole thing seems to simply be further evidence of the same issue. As such, I say let it be. She's earned the right to speak her mind, unintentional though her own comments may be.

I don't know if his mom is right, probably some truth to what she said. But Romney for sure had nothing to do with it, and thanks to her Keating five son (who was caught and convicted of taking bribes which led to the S&L collapse), lots of people lost a LOT of money back in the 80's. A WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY bigger deal than the little olympics bribery thing. Ahhh, the hypocrisy these days! And I'm sure that's what was haunting McCain when his mom said that. I actually feel sorry for him. He who getteth riches, but not in the right, when he is old will be esteemed a fool. (from Richest man in babylon).

That's what she said...

As someone who doesn't practice the faith I find these comments totally offensive and I will not give anyone including a 95 year old woman a pass on it. You can say she was speaking her views, just because some out speaks out and stands by it doesn't mean that it wasn't wrong and offensive, and if you believe what she she said is true or just you are is ignorant as she is. As for Gordon B, I hope he doesn't speak out about it, he isn't an megalomaniac like Al Sharpton, if anything the church should use this opportunity to educate people about the religion. But as for John, it doesn't matter I wasn't going to vote for him or any other republican any how. I just find comments like these and it doesn't matter if its moromon, catholic, black, white or whatever, its hate speech and its talk this that is ruining this country (along with many more things)
