Becker wins Salt Lake helm by a landslide

The size of Becker's victory says that people care more about stereotypes than candidates.
That is just sad - although, having Rocky out of office is a great thing for everyone.
Congratulations to the winners.
a progressive is always better than a Conservative!
We live in one of the most, if not the most, conservative states in the nation. Maybe we need to find a non-Mormon conservative. Maybe that is the problem. The State Party needs to wake up to the cancer of liberalism that is brewing in this state and it is growing exponentially here in SLC.
There is no such party as the "Democrat Party." That's a verbal tic one develops from listening to right-wingers like Sean Hannity.
As for Buhler, he ran a much more positive and less nasty campaign during the primary. Maybe people got to know him *too well* during the general election, and that's why he lost so bad?
It would be great if you could move south to Utah County.
Ralph failed to mention that he just fired somebody on his staff a few weeks ago.
You need money to get your message out.
There is a reason so many of us in SLC are "hostile" to the LDS Church, its members are friendly until they discover many of us are happy with our own belief system and don't want to change. Suddenly they drop the pretense and all friendliness is gone. Why can't people just be friendly neighbors without having a religious agenda?
Second, all of the Mormon whiners on here are stereotyping a non-Mormon just as much as they claim SLC voters were being against Buhler. Becker was clearly the better candidate regardless of religion. Buhler just wasn't a very interesting candidate. If a Mormon like Simon Sorensen were to run for mayor, he'd stand a very good chance of being elected mayor. And the person who said SLC is now unsafe to walk the streets is retarded. I never feel unsafe in the city at any time of the day or night.
Saying Buhler lost because he was Mormon sounds like sour grapes to me. Buhler lost because the majority of the voters didn't agree with his political stances. Salt Lake City isn't the place to cry about prejudices against Mormons. Mormons are so concentrated in Utah, they're able to isolate themselves t o the point where some of them rarely interact with people who are different than they are anywhere except work. This is where terms like "non-Mormon" come from. Let's lose these terms. It's the 21st century. If you must categorize us by the ways we are different than you, at least call us "Catholic" or "Atheist" or "Lutheran," but not "non-Mormon."
It blows my mind that you can imply that liberals want an unsafe, unattractive city. Liberals have children too! They want a great place to live, just disagree about what makes a great place. Quit demonizing everyone that doesnt' agree with you.
As a side note...immorality is subjective. Quit trying to legislate it.
The people speak on election day, and shouldn't the process be praised even when the result is not suited to your own particular taste?
Humbug to D-news for making "progressive" an epithet in both versions of this article.
Utahns need to come to better grips with our political reality; only changing demographics can, over time, alter the policies that we've expected to come from the mayor's office, the Statehouse.
Looking on from the outside it appears that many of those who are not LDS in SLC have quite a bit of bitterness towards the LDS. This surprises me, as I have found my LDS friends to be friendly and hard working. Hopefully you can all work together to make SLC great as I have always found it a great place to visit, despite your driving, with terrific local ski resorts.
Neither one is a bomb thrower and both would work well with the Chamber of Commerce, UofU, LDS Church, minorities, West Side residents, etc.
From the very beginning I hoped that Becker would win because I figured Buhler would probably lose to any combo of Wilson, Becker or Christiansen. But truth be told, if I still lived in SLC proper I probably would have voted Buhler--for some of the same reasons I voted for Corroon as County Mayor (a repudiation of prior leadership and a major change in direction).
That said, where personality is concerned, Becker is even more of an anti-Rocky than Buhler . You can be sure Ralph Becker wont be bawling out young staffers or getting into altercations in the parking garage. I think the city is in for some welcome changes. Lets give the man a chance.
