Mormonism is NOT Christian and never will be and it should STOP pretending to be such. It is a cult.

REALLY?!

i BEG TO DIFFER WITH ANYONE WHO SAYS MORMONS ARE NOT CHRISTIANS. WE BELIEVE IN GOD. WE TEACH ABOUT CHRIST IN OUR CHAPELS. (CULTS DON'T DO THAT!) WE LOVE OUR HEAVENLY FATHER AND OUR FAMILIES. WE SERVE IN THE ARMED FORCES, WE SERVE IN THE SENATE AND HOUSE, WE ARE FROM EVERY WALK OF LIFE AND EVERY COLOR OF SKIN. WE DO NOT RIDICULE OTHER CHURCHES IN OUR HOUSES OF WORSHIP....AS DO OTHERS AGAINST US.
WE BELIEVE IN FORGIVENESS, AND IN SERVING OUR FELLOW MAN. CULTS DON'T DO THAT. WE BELIEVE IN CHRIST...AGAIN...CULTS DON'T DO THAT.

The first dictionary definition of a Christian: "One who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ" (Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary). LDS theology not only encompasses the Bible and the Book of Mormon (Another Testament of Jesus Christ), but active members seek to emulate the Savior's example in their lives. Seems like Christianity to me.

Hey, "Me" you will never win adherents with that statement. First you precisely define i"cult" then you accurately compare tenets of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to that definition. Try it.

It saddens me, (and says more about this writer than about the subject) that people will not allow "Mormons" to follow Christ as best we can without vilifying us. Ironically, this kind of bigotry has always harrowed up the followers of Christ, and was one of the reasons He was crucified. If I were host to such obvious hatred of others, I would not take the Master's name on my lips.

Hey, Me.

If Mormonism is a cult, then it is a cult that believes in Christ. But anybody who thinks that Mormonism is a cult hasn't been to a Relief Society meeting (and they should go in cognito, because every time an investigator shows up in church, everyone thinks they ought to give a good impression, and it often makes them all look like zombies.)

But seriously, I thought that Christianity was believing in and teaching the words of Jesus Christ and following them whole-heartedly. And Mormons do just that. If they're not Christian, neither are Evangelicals or Catholics.

If anybody denies that Mormons believe in Christ, then they are either lying, or they don't know a thing about Mormons. Mormons do believe in Christ, they follow Christ, and they always will. That, I say, is enough to make them Christians.

Quack!!

What a silly, pointless debate. This says to me that 31% of americans either can't use a dictionary to look up the definition of the word 'christian' and/or have no qualms about jawing regarding things they know nothing about. It appears that 31% of people abandon 'homework' and 'research' at high-school graduation.

Here's how I see the issue:

All the waterfowl got together in a meeting one day amongst the cattails and the reeds. They all accused the duck of not belonging. "Thy semblance is diverse from all else, thy call is not as it should be! Hence, thou art not waterfowl and henceforth none shall call thee 'brother'!" they cried. "Thou shouldst not number thyself with us. Pretender! Be gone and quack no more!"

To this the duck, confident of who he was and not needing to prove his waterfowl-ness to any else, simply replied "Quack!" and confidently waddled away unhurt, onoffended, leaving the others behind.

One of the reasons I enjoy being a member of the LDS Church is because my membership allows me to be very generous to those who are not of my faith. I do not have to believe that those who die without hearing about Jesus Christ will spend an eternity in hell. I do not have to believe that little children who have not been baptized will suffer a similar fate. I do not have to believe that Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, and Muslims are doomed. I do not have to believe anything that is inimical to the pure mercy and grace of the Savior. We are arguably the most tolerant religion in the world as judged by official statements of doctrine.

True cults are the opposite, building walls and establishing animosity Have you seen the mural that graces the entry way to the Washington, D.C. temple? Who is found at the right hand of God in that wonderful painting? Not just Latter-day Saints. There is hope for all who choose to follow as much light as they have. I'm glad that I can see my fellowmen in such a hopeful and positive way.

I am a Mormon. I am a Christian. This is not negotiable. I pretend to nothing. I'm sick of hearing from baptist and evangelicals who attack my beliefs. They need to attend to their own faults and sins and quit trying to demean and discredit the things I hold to be sacred. Yes, I know we send missionaries out. Yes, I know we believe we have the restored gospel. But.. we dont send DVDs out to evangelicals telling them they're going to hell. We don't have movies in our church fomenting hatred like the madrass schools [yes this happens in many evangelical churchs]. We don't throw the thing they hold sacred on the ground tread on it and spew vemon in their face. We don't preach hatred from the pulpet. If it wasn't us under attact, it would be jews or catholics or other baptist.

As a former Episcopalian and an LDS convert of nearly 40 years, I find my LDS faith reaffirmed every time I study the New Testament, as we are doing in Sunday School this year. All Christian faiths lay claim to the New Testament as their foundation, yet how many actually follow the organization and teachings of the church established by Christ as it is described in the New Testament? Anyone who truly believes in Christ should be searching for a church with apostles and prophets and revelation from God. Why is it so hard to believe that a living God would continue to communicate with his children? I have only found one church that truly follows the New Testament and that is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but I would never call any of the other Christian churches non-Christian. If they profess a belief in Christ, no matter how different their understanding of him is from mine, then they are Christians and I respect them.

I think I'll just continue to be kind and inclusive to my friends and neighbors and let my Savior sort out who is and is not His follower. I wouldn't presume to speak on his behalf anyway.

Did the Pew Trust survey ask people questions to determine how much they accurately know about Mormons, versus how much is based on ignorance and lies about Mormons? Questions like "Do Mormons pray in the name of Christ?" "Are Mormons baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost?" "Do Mormons believe that the Gospels are literally true in depicting Christ as the Son of God who atoned for mankind's sins and was resurrected?"

Kevin of Arkansas

Popular oppinion does not change whether Mormons are Christians or not.

Mormon speak

LDS, define Christian, God and Jesus Christ per Mormon teachings. And then do that using the bible. Anyone who takes a honest look will see that The God of the bible and the Mormon god at not one and the same. That goes for Christian and Jesus Christ.

I saw the stats. Of those who say Mormons are christian, aren't christians themselves. So how would they know what a real Christian looked like.

If Mormons claim to christians why don't they follow the Christ of the bible. Do not be decieved by "another" gospel.
2Cr 11:4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or [if] ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with [him].
And there is only one way to get to heaven according to the bible. Jhn 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Abish

Giving the LDS members the label of Christian, or not, doesn't change the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I'm LDS and speak only for myself.

The gospel which is taught in the Bible and Book of Mormon is the gospel of Jesus Christ. I don't recall one single scripture in either book were Jesus calls himself a Christian or identifies himself in anyway other than the Son of God.

A title doesn't make one a Christian, Jew or Muslim. Behaviors define who we are. Call me whatever you want--I know who I am and I know the truth of the gospel.

Me

It is ridiculous to say that the LDS have the restored Gospel. That is a great sin against God and Jesus to say that their Gospel would have to be resstored. The Gospel of Jesus Christ has been alive since HIs resurrection. When Mormon missionaries threw out many many books from their missionary training (which I found in the recycle paper bin) I found out many disconcerting facts and that Mormons do NOT like Christians. Anybody can go around professing that they believe in Jesus...but is their Jesus real or a counterfeit. I do not need the legalistic ways of Mormonism nor do I have to earn my way to become a god. And NO WAY is my salvation dependent upon the temple works or Joseph Smith. We are saved by grace alone in the death and blood of our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Jesus who was NOT married...did not have children. God out heavenly Father was never in human form on earth.

The real story

To me, this report tells me what percentage of these various demographics are "Religious Bigots". It exposes some prejudices that may be good to know are out there but it doesn't tell anything about Mormons.

The comments it has spawned have also shed some light on the prejudice that is still out there.

I must say... The comments defending Mormons have seemed much more Christ-like than those condemning them.

What I don't understand is that people who get information about the LDS church generally get thier information from either people who are not members of the church or people who have left the church, for whatever reason.
It seems that if you want accurate informaton about something you go to the source. If I wanted to learn about nursing, I would not go to an artist. Although if I did I would get the artist's interpretation and opionion of nursing. However, if I really wanted to know, I would go to a nurse or a nursing school to learn about nursing.
If you simply want to know the truth about what "Mormons" believe and how they practice thier beliefs, whether or not you choose to accept or believe it yourself, find out from an active practicing member, church authority, or attend a meeting.

JAW

Personally, I don't understand what the big deal is over this issue. What religion I belong to and practice is my choice.
No one REALLY knows for sure which church or churches has the truth. That's why it's called FAITH. It's what people choose to believe.
Only when we die will we know for sure. Until then, I want to be able to choose what I beleive, and I'll let others do the same. And if I choose to be a Mormon or Catholic or Protestant or Luthern or whatever, what should it matter to anyone else.
After all, isn't that the whole reason America came to be? Religous Freedom and Choice.

Wow

More Catholics actually side with the Momon church. I wonder what they would say about what the Mormons really think and teach of the Catholics.
