So, if another employer offered you a 20% raise to do the same work, you'd just snub your nose at it? Not to mention the NY fans who have generally hated him no matter how well he's played. Why blame A-Rod?

What is absolutely obscene is that owners will throw that kind of money at him, or anyone, to play a game. What does it say about our world, and us, who willingly pay the tab that supports that kind of obscenity? We virtually deify these sports stars, and for what? What contributions do they make to the infrastructure of our society?

The average teacher makes 1/500th of what somebody like A-Rod makes, not including endorsements and other extras and perks. Is his contribution equal to that of 500 teachers? WHERE DO OUR VALUES LIE? What kind of priorities does our world reflect? How totally and ridiculously obscene is that?

We have more to worry about in our world than ragging on one guy who is simply accepting the opportunities in life offered to him. Speaking of such things, what percentage of the newspaper is dedicated to sports compared to, lets say, education, community or social issues? 'Nuff said.

Add me to the Ani-Rod side of the ledger. The actions of A-Rods agent were contrived. This reeks of GREED.

This is exactly the main reason that I have never paid for, nor intend to ever pay for, and attend any professional sport... The spoiled super rich ego-maniacs (aka super athletes) don't have any sense of reality. Its amazing to me that sports teams keep shelling out the money to the players and that in return the fans keep buying tickets at inflating prices.

Someday this trend that society has set will come to haunt all of us!

The yankees would have paid him $81 million over the next 3 years and a 5 year extension after that of about $150 million.

And he wants more?

That looks like greed to me.

What's really "astonishing" is that a grown adult could be so simple-minded as to suggest, as you have in this column, that Utah's school voucher debate doesn't matter.

Stick with sports, Lee. It's clear that reality is over your head.

Yes, blame A-Rod

Why blame A-Rod, John? Because another employer didn't offer him a 20% raise to do the same work--he just up and decided that his services would cost any interested employer that much. As has been pointed out, it isn't like he needed it, or wasn't already over compensated for what he does. Would I snub my nose at a 20% raise? Not if it was freely offered. But if I was already earning $25 million a year--to play a game--I wouldn't hold out for more, or expect to be offered more.

Other wise I agree with you. I will never attend a pro venue either, or do anything to maintain those egos. I hope to make the point by protesting with my wallet. Were it up to me, pro sports leagues would be dis-banned, and after having their fun in college, athletes could contribute to society by getting meaningful jobs that make a real difference--like teaching. But I have no hope of ever seeing that happen, and the prospect of teachers ever being fairly and honestly compensated for what they do is equally dim. Still, I won't stop doing what I can to make it happen.
