Let me know who you vote for this time so I can vote opposite. just kidding. This thread needed a little humor.

Romney is the best candidate for president. He is one of the best candidate that the LDS Church can give. Guys don't worry, if he is foreordained he'll win! If not, we'll try again in the next elections with a different LDS candidate.

For the non LDS, look at his credentials. He is running for president of America and not as pastor-in-chief. I hope he gets the nomination. Hillary- be very afraid.
caroline | 4:20 a.m. Oct. 12, 2007
I hope Mr. Romney wins, but the White House spokesman said that his Mormon religion will keep him from being nominated, they won't say that in public they will say that he was a flip flopper. That is bigotry in the highest office, I feel so sad but I will still vote for the most qualified and honest and most talented leader there is - that I believe is Mr. Romney. He is a great family man and we love him and his family. Critics just love to hate the Mormons, but so what, Mormons just keep growing and growing because people recognize its goodness and truthfulness, so Mormons are weird, what's weird about not drinking coffee and not smoking or doing drugs?

Those two roles can't really be separated. Anyone who is president is also himself. You can't say that he needs to act only as president, everyone is influenced by their previous experiences. However, I don't think Mormon influences would be a bad thing. In fact, they might help our country stop avoiding morals.
More Folklore | 8:19 a.m. Oct. 12, 2007
I can't believe the "folklore" that some LDS people believe! Romney is not "foreordained" my goodness! Have the other LDS people in government been "forordained" too? Well, I guess when Romney doesn't make it someone else will be "forordained"....you really have given me the chuckle for the day!

I congratulate all you posters for sticking to the issue of Mitt Romney, his religion, his qualifications to be president and not announcing that Ru Paul is the best presidential candidate out there.
Mo-town | 9:29 a.m. Oct. 12, 2007
It cracks me up how some of you folks just casually spit stuff out you think is fact, just because you heard Bill Maher or Keith Obermman or some other liberal pundit say it.

For example (and this is just 1) Romney never supported gay marriage. Supporting gay rights in Massachusetts was on his platform when he was governor, because that state is full of flamers and you can't just seclude them from society. I'm not saying that was right, but never anywhere or anytime have you heard him support gay marriage

He did however support a woman's right to chose, and it's a good thing he pulled a Reagan and finally saw the light

Bottom line is... if Mitt weren't LDS, he'd be a sure shot to the White House. Now he just has to work a lot harder at it. He's a fantastic debater, an econmic guiness, not a pansie when it comes to the War on Terror, and looks good in a suit. All neccessary components

A Romney/Thompson ticket (in either order) would suit me just find. Bring on the Socialist
Mike | 9:32 a.m. Oct. 12, 2007
There is one reason Romney should strongly consider a statement that clarifies or addresses certain aspects of the Church - because millions of potential voters have negative views of the Church and may not vote for Romney because of that. Doesn't matter if the views are correct, where they came from, or if that represents a religious bias. If Romney wants to win he needs to address the reasons why millions may choose not to vote for him - period.

Why is it that others want to question Romney's committment to the Constitution by trying to question his religion? Isn't Freedom of Religion protected by the Constitution?
Rosie | 11:08 a.m. Oct. 12, 2007
Well..........this would be a fine idea. IF..each and every candidate has their religion cleared up also. This is a land based on Freedom of Religion, folks. If Romney is suppose to 'clear up' certain aspects of his religion, every single candidate had better be put under the same microscope. Any person's religion is PERSONAL and FREE in this land.
Anonymous | 12:10 p.m. Oct. 12, 2007
Freedom of religion is not the same as enslavement to a cult. How would you feel about a presidential candidate who was an Islamic Fundamentalist?
anonymous | 1:48 p.m. Oct. 12, 2007
I would like to see Brother Hatch, Brother Reid, and Brother Romney duke it out to see who can be considered the best Mormon.
Rose | 6:57 p.m. Oct. 12, 2007
Enslavement to a cult?? Give me a break. Get your facts straight before you charge something you can't defend.
Chris | 9:34 a.m. Oct. 14, 2007
I'd sure like to hear how Hillary Clinton or Barrack Obama squares with their faith, and explain it to me. I'm confused about Kennedy's professed Catholic faith as well. Can he please explain to me how he can separate his faith from his actions?

This is a double standard. If the far right and the far left won't vote for Romney because he's LDS, then they are the losers, and not Romney.

MISINFORMATION WARNING!!!

In 1960, JFK did NOT deliver his famous speech on religion and politics to Southern Baptists! The address was given before the HOUSTON MINISTERS ASSOCIATION and that group included just about every denomination in Houston at the time.

dennis | 9:40 a.m. Oct. 15, 2007
It cracks me up, Mo-Town to hear some folks casually spit stuff out just because they heard if from Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulture.
dennis | 9:49 a.m. Oct. 15, 2007
Like it or not, Rose, those outside the Zion curtain view Mormonism as a "cult." There will never be world domination (like the catholics) by Mormons, nor will there ever be a change in the "cult" point of view.
dennis | 9:56 a.m. Oct. 15, 2007
The biggest mistake the Limbaugh-ites make is they try to associate the word liberal with the word Democrat every chance they get, and this is supposed to ace out all contradicting points of view no matter what the issue. All it is really doing is exposing extremist ignorance and dwindling club membership to the masses. And the masses are not that stupid.
Ross Peridot | 11:54 a.m. Oct. 15, 2007
The only way for the religious commitments of Mitt Romney to be neutralized as a factor in this election is for him to renounce Mormonism. Other candidates do not have to do the same because they are either members of mainstream religious traditions that have already "paid their dues" to earn the respect of being a "non-cult", or they are not religiously affiliated. That is as it should be. Religion has no place in politics.
Anonymous | 12:48 p.m. Oct. 15, 2007
"Religion has no place in politics." How true. But try telling that to Utahns. You might as well go outside, find the nearest tree and start banging your head against it.
Real-igion | 1:50 p.m. Oct. 15, 2007
Even if religious believers want to elect a president (or mayor) who "shares their values," the truth is you really don't know a thing about Mitt Romney's "values" just by knowing he is a Mormon. Harry Reid is also a Mormon. You can be a Mormon and believe pretty much anything you want to believe regarding politics. The political discourse must transcend religious ideologies so that a common language and set of values can unite rather than divide any given community, nation, or world. Religion is a proven divisive influence around the world, as well as here in Utah. Unity cannot possibly be achieved based on religious beliefs and "values" because such things are inherently ambiguous, vague, meaningless, and frequently nonsensical - filled with paradoxes, inconsistencies, and every other logical and rational fallacy! That is why religion must be kept out of politics - all it does is divide and cause death.
