Sam Boyd stadium can be a difficult place for the cougars to play. We can all be sure that UNLV will be up and ready for this game. While I think our coaches will have our team ready, it will be a close, hard fought game. It will probably come down to who demonstrates the greater ball security.
I predict a BYU win 27 to 24.
DJ | 7:34 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
No contest. BYU will blow it open early.
david wilson | 7:40 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Sam Boyd stadium may be a tough place to play, and I agree that the key for BYU is to take control of the ball, but if they do that I don't think that the score will be that close. 28-14 with UNLV's second touchdown coming in the closing minutes after the game has been decided.

Sam Boyd a difficult place to play? Are you kidding? It's tiny and will be filled to capacity with a sea of Cougar blue.
Ryan | 7:58 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
What? Sam Boyd Stadium can be a tough place for BYU to play? We've never lost to UNLV there. We've only lost one game there - the Las Vegas Bowl against Cal.

This game is losable, but the stadium has been our home away from home.
Cam | 8:10 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Apparently you weren't at the BYU-UNLV game in Vegas two years ago. There were so many Cougar fans there, I think it's appropriate that their stadium be named "Little Lavell Edwards Stadium."
amen | 8:17 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Easy win for the cougars. Second string could beat UNLV at BYU's other home stadium.
HLB | 8:21 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
How many times have we heard.... and stated out of our own mouths .... "we've never lost there", or "we will blow them out", and the unexpected happens? Let's beware that anything can happen. Let's hope the Cougars are focused and ready to play.
3rd Gen Cougar Fan | 8:25 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Sam Boyd is BYU's second home field. There will be as many Cougar fans as Rebel fans there, including yours truly. RAH RAH RAH RAH RAH! GOOOOOOO COUGARS!
Brandon | 8:34 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Michigan had never lost to a D-1AA team- at home- until this year. We'd never lost to Tulsa on the road... until this year. A lot of "We never... until this year" moments have dotted this season, and the Cougars are wise to not overlook UNLV this weekend. The rebels just shut out a team that beat a preseason Top 10 team. The last thing I want to see is another Tulsa game.
Lost more than one | 8:48 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
I was at a game for the WAC championship we lost at Sam Boyd as well so dont say we have never lost or only lost once. Lets hope we are focused and ready this week and also make sure we have all the facts before we post
Big D | 8:56 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
I'm so excited for this game!!!

Go cougs!
I agree with Brandon | 9:15 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Everybody needs to hold their overconfident attitudes until after. I've never been a fan of arrogance, and there are a lot of arrogant statements on this board. Quit calling it "an easy win" or "Home away from home." It's tactless word like those that make poor sportsmanship. Predict a win if you wish, but have some class about it.

Go Cougars!
Rice Eccles South | 9:16 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
hmmm sounds familiar. Sam Boyd stadium is BYU's home away from home.. kinda like Lavell Edward's stadium is Utah's home away from home. They've lost once there in the last six tries, maybe thats why they're starting to call it R.E.S. Rice Eccles South
J | 9:55 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Brandon:
You are right. But, I think most people were saying we've never lost to them there or we've only lost once at the stadium were in response to Dean's comment on the power of Sam Boyd.
Dean:
That is rediculous to say that Sam Boyd is a difficult place to play. Where did you come up with that? However, it is definitely NOT rediculous to think that UNLV can beat the cougars.
DJ:
You probably were one on those guys saying that we would shut out Tulsa and that their offense would be shocked by our defense. Right? Look what UNLV did to the Utes (who probably will win BYU this year) and what they did with Wisconsin.
UTEfire | 10:07 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Good Luck Cougars. I am sure the UNLV rebels will feel the same way and recognize that you have always (mostly) beat them and just roll over and acknowledge that you are a better team and that you have a lot of fans in the stands so why the heck play the game? Right?

I am sure Bronco isn't thinking that way right now or Hall or Unga. I hope not.

Personally I think they are going to be so up for you that they will throw everything and the stray cat at you from the moment kickoff hits. I think they will do anything to smash Hall into the ground at any chance they get.

Nobody is immune from being beaten this or any other year. UNLV is not a weak team.

Good Luck Cougars
Longtime Ute | 10:17 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Actually Utah is 6-1 in provo since 1993. Bottom line is that since 1993 Utah has OWNED that stadium. And we really wish you guys would take better care of our second home.
34-31 | 10:21 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Utah 34, BYU 31, 'nuff said...
Go Cougars | 10:31 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Score early and often, crank up the run game and turn losse the linebackers.
Go Rebels | 11:06 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
After reading all of your comments it's no wonder why nobody likes you. I can fully understand why nobody else in the conference cheers for you. You are all so self righteous and arrogant.

We are not the same Rebels of the past - I admit you still have the better team this year and you should win - however if anyone of you idiots knows anything about football, you know that anything can happen. As good as you all think you are, you are still very beatable - do you have "good" win this year?? hmmm..I don't think so. The only team in our conference that has a "good win" are the
bi-polar Utes - and we handed it to them.
3rd Gen Cougar Fan | 11:10 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
BYU 33, Utah 31
Beck to Harline, 'nuff said. That whole 34-31 taunt is dead and buried.

I am not saying this is an automatic win and I know the coaches and team are not feeling that way. I am just saying that Sam Boyd Stadium is a fairly comfortable place to play for BYU, unlike Laramie or Albuquerque. And if Ute fans call Lavell Edwards Stadium Rice-Eccles South, than what shall Cougars call Rice-Eccles? I vote for Beck-Harline Stadium.
scooter | 11:25 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
I get so sick and tired of reading all these Ute fans comments they are just frustrated with their 3-3 record and hate to admit that they hired the wrong guy for the job. It is hard to admit that Byu has better attendance at football games and has the bigger and best stadium in the state of utah. It is also hard for the ute fans to admit that they are 0-2 in conference. Oh ya did the Ute fans forget what happened last year I will just spell it out for you Johnny Harline touchdown game win last year, and as for Unlv the cougars have a Conference Championship to defend so we are focused on the Unlv game unlike the utes!! Go Cougars!!!!!
33-31 | 11:38 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
BYU currently holds the W in the rivalry.
Grandpa | 11:53 a.m. Oct. 9, 2007
J--it is ridiculous that you can't spell ridiculous.
We aren't We | 12:13 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Just to clarify!!! We sit on the computers and they play the game. They execute or sometimes don't execute. We don't due anything but scream or make excuses. Cheer or don't Cheer. They are the ones playing we are watching. Good luck to the MWC.
Workinglate | 12:13 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Is this the same team that almost beat #5 Wisconsin last year? I don't know that I'd count it in the win column just yet. Yes, their record isn't impressive, and maybe BYU fans fill the stadium, but it's a mistake to look at UNLV and think it will be an easy win. These are the same guys that spanked Utah, so they can compete.

To "Go Rebels" - I don't see how the discussion on this board is any different than any other - why are you claiming that these comments make BYU fan arrogant and self-righteous? I suppose, by extension, it makes everyone else self-righteous and arrogant as well - correct?
Anonymous | 12:28 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Do I need to remind you byu lovers that you won with no time left on the clock with your best team in 10 years to beat a average Utah team!!!!!!, byu holds the w in the rivalry...nice job but who holds the most wins in the past 5..10...15 years. UTAH UTAH UTAH. I forgot what is the current record for byu seniors against Utah...1-2 nice job.
Utah seniors currently
3 winning seasons
3 bowl games
3 bowl wins
1 MWC title
BYU seniors currently
1 winning season
2 bowl games
1 bowl win
1 MWC title
I beat those seniors wished they had gone to a winning progam.

Keep adding those IAA teams to your schedule so you can pad your stats...and hopefully make your team bowl eligible. Sounds like two years ago when byu was 6-5 and played CAl, and one of their wins was a 1-AA team to make them 6-5.
Go conference usa/Tulsa the WR's are still open
Go Ben Olsen
Not difficult at Sam Boyd | 12:34 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
UNLV is a microcosm of U. of Utah. Inconsistent.

Opened by narrowly defeating Utah St., 23-16, in a game where they had to rally.

Played Wisconsin tough in Vegas, but lost 20-13.

Thinking they were improved, got blown out by Hawaii at home, 49-14.

Humbled, caught Utah sleepwalking--won 27-0.

Convinced that they were great, lost at in-state rival Nevada-Reno, 27-20.

Went to Colorado Springs, got spanked by Air Force (a team who'd just lost two straight), 31-14.

(Air Force is almost as bad...beats TCU and Utah, only to get whacked by BYU and Navy.)

Sam Boyd cannot be considered a tough place to play. What success has UNLV had over the past 20 years?

Kase | 12:35 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
J-- you don't "win" byu, you beat them. I hope that isn't a Ute
dmac | 12:44 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
It wouldnt be an upset if UNLV beat BYU.
Frustrated BYU Fan | 12:44 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Another thing that is ridiculous is that many BYU fans CAN'T watch the game!! I can't get KSL on the radio here, either, so I have to listen to the game on my computer, where I can get KSL radio. I haven't seen a BYU game on TV for a long time. Sure hope that changes in the near future. Any word about DISH getting the games? I hope they do.
Ute fan | 12:52 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Hey Scooter go look at all the stupid comments BYU fans put on Utah articles. And its funny you say we hired the wrong coach...you mean the same coach your school wanted to hire? As a U fan i actually like Bronco, i think its great what he has done to bring life back to that program. And i have a lot of respect for the standards he is making players hold up too. I also think Max looks like a good Quarterback and i dont blame you all for getting excited about him. And yes U fans are frustrated with our record but its not like you guys are exactly tearing it up scooter!
UNLV LOBO's | 1:23 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Get it! UNLV is as good a team as the Lobos and are as capiable of pulling off the upset as Tulsa. They will play four qtrs of hardnose football and if they get ahead they certainly have the weapons to play clock control. The major key to sportsmanship is to RESPECT the opposing team. Sure we can all hope for an easy win, we can hope key personnal do not get injured or run into a 5 turnover evening.

Go Cougars and Go Rebels, may the best team win.
Wing-nut | 2:11 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
It feels like a long time since BYU has had a game. I hate bye weeks. I realize that they are necessary for the guys to heal up, but it just feels like a long time between games. Go Cougs.
Seattle | 2:11 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
two questions:
does anyone remember the name of the DB that came to BYU from Louisville straight off his mission. He hurt his knee that first year back.

also, does anyone know the recruit that coach Mendenhall stayed in town to meet last week? It made it sound like it was someone they really needed.
Thanks
Concast-hater | 2:18 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Why do people talk about BYU's next opponent as being close game that will go down to the last minute? It gets old and loses credibility when they are talking about UNLV. For the love of Pete, this is not going to be close. It might not be a beating, but BYU will clearly win this one. Then Sunday the Ute fans will then downplay the win by pointing out how lousing UNLV really is.
UTEfire | 2:19 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
"nuff said" means nothing substantial but represents feeble-minded comebacks and arguments.

All some bloggers do is "talk" trash and think it is effective and actually matters. 34-31 is in the past. Beck to Harline is in the past.

Wins matter...especially this year. Players on the field matter. I doubt any BYU players are cheering in the locker room yelling "yeah some vapid blogger named '3rd gen cougar fan' bought a BYU t-shirt and says we're better than UNLV and Utah...were gonna win"

The anonimity of the "blog" system unfortunately allows meningless comments to be proliferated and facilitates otherwise timid creatures to say things that they would never dare say to any person's face.

I appreciate sensible fans and their comments but some of you need to grasp reality a little harder and realize that your wearing a blue or red shirt means nothing to the actual outcome of the game.

That is not to say that sensible and passionate rivalry is not healthy and does not add to the anticipation and excitement of the game.

Good luck with UNLV this week Cougars...but don't count your field goals until they are kicked.

Go Utes!!!!!
ute fan NOT | 2:22 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
It is a good thing that those poor ute's won there bowl game of the worst teams last Friday, otherwise they would still be in there holes crying a storm instead of trying to make themselves feel better by talking trash on a BYU article.

UNLV has only won two games this year, against USU and their little sister, Uof U. BYU will win unless they overlook unlv. Go Cougars.

BYU is 8-4 at the SNOT over the past 12 games.

33-31, enough said!!!

rebel | 3:07 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
get ready to eat turf you cry baby cougies. your team is awful and we are going to hand you a conference loss like we did to the utes.
Hatred? | 3:14 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Is this rivalry about hatred or good clean fun? I went through a period when I was younger, where I hated everything about the Utes! Now that I'm older, I've realized that some of the best people I grew up with are Ute fans. My dear neighbor from across the street was a die-hard Utah fan. He just recently died of cancer. I felt really bad for him, because it happened right before the UCLA game. I bet he was smiling down from heaven.
Let's try to take a minute and remember that we all know good people from the "so called" enemy side of the rivalry.

GOOOD LUCK BYU and UTAH!!!!
'nuff said to UTEfire | 3:15 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Dear UTEfire,

Some of us actually have fun with this. I posted the 34-31 comment to get things riled up, which it did in good fun, but man, did you get all up in a bunch. I don't consider myself nor you 'feeble-minded'. Deseretnews did not say: "only PhD people with dissertation-like comments can write here". You need to relax and take a huge chill pill. It's only football. To all you cougar fans, keep the smack coming!!! I love it!!!! Go mighty Utes!!!
Ohio state's remarkable Defense | 3:27 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Last year Ohio State's Defense got embarrassed & scorched by Florida's offense. Ever since then they have being playing with a chip on their shoulder and are shutting everyone down! They are ranked #1 in almost everything that is defensive. The reason I tell you this is because BYU's defense got scorched by Tulsa and ever since then they have played exceptionally, holding Airforce to just 6 points and created 5 turnovers against UNM! They do not want to get embarrased again this season! I believe UNLV is much improved but still not enough to put up enough points against BYU's defense to win the game. Oh, and why are we talking BYU vs Utah already? Last I checked we're not in November yet.
Walt | 3:35 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
UTEFire has the best take here. We all are being a bit childish about this and we carry the BYU/Ute rivalry way further than any other rivalry in the country. The Utes have owned BYU for the majority on the games since the 90's so one Beck to Harline pass cannot overshadow the overall record. And, finally, why is it so hard to understand that no matter what MWC team we root for, we ought to cheer for each other when we play out of conference games...it only helps our overall conference image. Last year we all won our bowl games except NM and that national coverage helped us.
Go BYU and go Utah...until they play each other and then and only then choose your side.
4-12 | 4:21 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Utahs record for 2007
Weak Argument | 4:48 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
"Do I need to remind you byu lovers that you won with no time left on the clock with your best team in 10 years to beat a average Utah team!!!!!!"

Your second best team in Utah history (Urban's first year) barely beat BYU 3 to 0. That was possibly BYU's wort team in decades. Weak argument yet you continue to bring it like you are on to something good.

"Keep adding those IAA teams to your schedule so you can pad your stats...and hopefully make your team bowl eligible."

Kind of like the win Utah picked up last year against Northern Arizona. Or did you conveniently forget about that one.

Bring up the past all you want. As of right now though BYU has bragging rights. A win is a win even if it came with no time left on the clock.

The Cougars still have a season worth playing for. What's the Utes motivation? Beat the Cougars. Sounds familiar. That's the Ute program I grew up hating.

See you in November
pcoug | 5:47 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
I'm a die hard BYU fan, but this unlv game will not be an easy win. If their by-polar team comes around and is playing great football, it will be one heck of a game. Their running back is almost imposible to tackle, if he runs away from brian kehl he might have a big game. So go cougs, prove me wrong, i still say it will be a hard fought game.
As for the utah byu game, lets see how the teams are doing closer to the game eh? teams get a lot better or worse throughout the season.
Walt | 5:59 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Whoa there Weak Argument, and this is coming from a BYU fan; let's take a look at the standings and see if you are counting your chickens (MWC Championship) before they hatch: BYU, Wyoming & S.D. have no losses; A.F., N/M/ & UNLV have one loss; and TCU, Utah & Colorado St. have two; we still have six conference games left to play so are you already saying we are going to win the MWC and Utah isjust playing to beat us to make their season? I don't know what you think but there is still a ;ot of football to play & just like we are seeing what has happened in the top 25, anything can happen and the fat lady hasn't even thought about singing yet!
Dear J | 6:07 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
You win a game and beat a team.

BYU has to stay very focused. Execution is an absolute must each and every game.
Re: Walt | 6:19 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
Walt:

Where in my comment did I say BYU had the championship locked up. I didn't. The Cougars however are in the running. The Utes are not. Two losses in conference is not going to get it done.

The Utes are on the outside looking in at this point. Better luck next year.

Utah dominating BYU? No No No | 6:31 p.m. Oct. 9, 2007
I love how yewt fans SELECTIVELY choose the years they want to make the series look as though they have dominated the rivalry as of late. Let's break it down by decade to see the REAL picture.

so far from 2000-2006 Utah leads 4 games to 3 (what dominance?)

2006 BYU WINS (1 WIN)
2002-2005 UTAH WINS (4 WINS)
2000-2001 BYU WINS (2 WINS)

1990-1999 BYU WINS 5, UTAH WINS 5 (Where's the dominance?)

1980-1981 BYU WINS 9, UTAH WINS 1 (now there's dominance!!!)

Until the late 50's Utah was dominate, then in the 60's BYU turned things around and started dominating in the 70's and 80's. As of late the series has been pretty even as can be seen above.

I won't believe Utah is dominating the series until they can control an entire decade.
