What a fitting tribute to a truly remarkable man. I had the privilege of visiting with Dr. Capecchi while working at the U and came away not only impressed with his amazing life story, but with his humility and his complete lack of pretense. This was quite astonishing for a man of his ability and intelligence. This prize has been long overdue and is a much-deserved recognition of his many contributions. My heartiest congratulations to Dr. Capecchi, to this family, and to the University of Utah.

This is a tremendous honor for the University, its Medical School, and the state. Obviously, the U is at the forefront of this kind of genetic research.

How blessed we are to live in a time when brilliant men like Mario Capecchi are expanding knowledge that has so many possibilitities for improving the quality of lives around the world.

A great day for him and his colleagues!

What a great honor for him and the University. Has anyone at the U won the Nobel Prize before? I know Henry Eyring was nominated many years ago, but has anyone else besides Dr. Capecchi ever won?

He's the first.

This proves once again that Utah is not a "fly over state." Now I hope we can get KSL to replace that horribly degrading BYU football ad with an ad of real substance about a Nobel Prize winner at the school up north.

Things like this show why it is important for our legislature to understand that the University of Utah's mission is unique and is not a trade school.

Wisonsin has a quiver full of Nobel Laureates. Great to see Utah get one finally. It's a lobbying process not just a random award. the U would have been lobbying for him for several years by now.
Go Cougars!!

I am very proud of the man and his accomplishments. Utah is a state that has proven itself time and time again with its fusion and health breakthroughs. Congrads to the UofU and its staff for it professional and on going search in health and science.

Fewer than ten comments on Utah's (meaning both the state and the university) Nobel Laureate. That's it?

Imagine if it were a really important story, the kind that provided out of the box thinking, like insights from Dick Harmon - the comment board would fill up by the end of the day. No, wait. Some would rather carry on the so-called rivalry into every aspect of life, than remove the blinders and see what's really going on in the world.

Either the readership gets it and has nothing to say or add about Dr Capecchi and the prize, which is strange indeed considering all the drivel that shows up on these boards, or the readers don't get it, which is more sad than strange.

Congratulations, of course, to many, but I see no mention here of his mother. It would seem to me that the children of the world would be far better off with mothers like his, than the awards of the nanny empire so many are trying to build around us. There were those in 1937 and 1938 and 1939 who did not play the Neville Chamberlain role and roll over in the face of Hitler's onslaughts. When we look at our Congress today, it is hard to find many leaders one can imagine who could or would raise sons as Mario Capecchi's mother did.

What a tremendous story for Utah...11 posts. Murray delays a prom because of general conference and it's 478 posts and counting. Now lets get back to something that's really important. What's the latest on Anna Nichole Smith?

Glenn,
Please don't mention fusion in this context - that's one thing real scientists in Utah would like to see forgotten (it nearly cost us our university!). Anyway, we're on the map now.

A remarkable achievement. Congratulations to Dr. Cappechi and his team. Usually I hate these comment threads because they seem to bring out the worst in people and broaden the divisions in our community but today I am happy to it to say congratulations on a job very well done. And I am a die-hard fanatical fan of a different university in the state.

That is great, congratulations to Dr. Cappechi and the UofU, they deserve it. It will be interesting to see what kind of improvements these kinds of studies lead to in the next several years.
