November HEADLINE

Utah Finishes Season 1-11
(Entire coaching staff fired)

How's that for motivation?
Utenut | 7:06 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Calling it like it is. I hate to say it but that's right on, let's take the sugar coating off, excuses aside it's just a bad football team right now.

Mr. Rock, you're not funny. Ask around.

Although overly critical, I agree with the jist of your article, except on one point: Utah does have a quarterback, Kyle has picked the wrong one. Grady played awesome vs. UCLA. And you are being way too critical about his first half play at UNLV. He is driving and Louks fumbles. How many penalties did we have creating 2nd or 3rd and 20+ situations. Or how many first downs were reversed after holding or personal foul penalties? How many dropped passes did we have? Finally, how many times did receivers lose sight of where the first down marker was only to catch the ball for 4 and 2? No. We do have a quarterbackk, he just needs a head coach that will support him. Seen Kyle say one positive thing? I for one like watching Grady play and I can see what he is trying to do. We have a much better chance with him.
Urban Legend | 8:00 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Can I be first ro point out on this blog that Urban Meyer has nothing to do with Ute football this year. The Uof U was his stepping stone. He has been gone longer than he was here.

Now we can move on to real issues.
Anonymous | 8:23 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
There is still 2/3rds of the year left...oh yea I was talking about Utah State turning their program around.
utefan | 8:37 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
First of all The Armed Forces Bowl (Not the Ft Worth bowl) was fun. You must not have been there.
The Utah players and coaches know they are struggling, I thought your comments were mean spirited. I think they call it kicking a horse when its down.If you were trying to be funny, you weren't.
Do you think the players are tyring to be bad. Do you think the coaches do not care? Have some compssion for our local team.
Who Cares | 8:55 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
I just heard from a reliable source that Utah State has developed a new defensive scheme to be use specifically against the Utes.

Their plan is to allow the Utes to drive all the way to the 1 yard line and self destruct.

Go USU!
Bill | 9:01 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
I've said it before and say it again: Fire Whit and the staff. He's just another "father figure" to the players. Don't come to Utah to make a friend, come here to win.
Mark | 9:28 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Ouch, that's a harsh reality. Let's face it, the utes are bipolar, with the ugly side showing 3/4 of the time. But I don't go off on my bipolar cousin everytime he's down. I don't know what this article will do for motivation, but I think the Utes have surprised us too many times (for the better) to count them out this early. Go UTES!
Dave | 9:29 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Mean spirited? It was finally calling the Utes what they are.....how can you argue with the article when they lost to a horrible team and the coach says he has no idea why or what happened. They do stink, and when the lose on Saturday to the Aggies they'll take their rightful place in the state's football heirarchy, under the Ags.
fr1nk | 9:34 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
When a team plays like the Utes this year it comes down to two things, poor coaching and poor play calling.
Jimmy Sneakers | 9:38 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Jimmy thinks Utah wins this game because at 1-3 this is now a big game and the U only gets up for big games.

Ute fan | 10:03 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
I've been trying all week to give away my tickets. Nobody will take them. I'll leave them at the ticket booth for whomever wants them. Any Ute fans out there?
Ute4ever | 10:13 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
We couldn't beat Snow College this year, but we will beat Utah St.
TyroneH | 10:26 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Rock you are very funny. As for True Ute I can tell that you are a typical UTE fan (drunk off your butt). All be there (I'll be there). As for the utes I am very mad because, I was stupid enough to buy season tickets. And yes I was a season ticket holder during the Mcbride era. Whittingham has been a servicable coordinator at best. I remember the running the prevent the entire second half and barely hold on for the win. And to all of the BYU fans who are reading the articles about the U. and laughing (you're welcome). We took CLUELESS KYLE and let you take Mendenhall. If it wasn't for Chris Hill on Kyle's front door begging and pleading into the early morning Coach Whit would have been wearing Blue. THANKS CHRIS HILL WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!
U-Fan | 10:34 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
If we had Saint Urban Meyer along, we wouldn't be in this mess.
Jake | 10:56 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
I've already got tickets, but thanks for pretending to be a Ute fan. Since when did college football become all about winning and losing. Can't it still be a great experience just to be at the game? If it were all about winning, USU would have had to shut their program down a long time ago.

Oh, and Brad, do you have a source for this "popular theory" that people do best when criticized in public? Or did you just think it was a good thing to say before you decided to point out all of the team's shortcomings?
bandwagon | 11:51 a.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Jake you are right man, sounds like nothing but fair weathered fans. I still remember the 03 season, everyone started wearing red. Man, get on or get off, thick and thin stay true to your team. Im a cougar but not a Ute hater until rivalry week. We suffed for years now we have a little hope. Thats part of the game, ups and downs. Have a little pride, make excuses, keep the trash talk alive, whatever just dont be a bunch of babies and hop off the wagon. This blog is full of a bunch of weaksauce fans. To be honest with you I would rather the utes to be 10-0 by the time rivalry week hits than any other way. Because I know the Utes always come out and play like an undefeated team against us.

Go cougs!!!!!!
Jimmy Sneakers | 12:37 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Jimmy wants to add that Kyle is not cut out to be a head coach.
Anonymous | 1:01 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Hey bandwagon, the fact that U fans are talking about the U makes them anything but bandwagon fans. Go look up the definition. If they were bandwagon fans they wouldn't say anyting about the U because they would be busy cheering on their new team.

On the article, people it's called sarcasm, you may or may not appriciate it, but that is all it is.

For the USU fans, give me a break USU football hasn't even been relevent in the city of Logan let alone in the entire state for so long, one win will not change that.

For "Who Cares" - I am a UTE fan, but I thought your comment was quite funny and probably a good idea for the USU coaching staff. This has been a problem for the UTES over the past few years and they don't seem any closer to solving it.

jake is smart... | 1:02 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
us ute fans got spoiled while urban was here...

if you are really a ute fan, you will root for them through the rough times...

i will be at the game tomorrow, in the MUSS, with my cow bell, and cheering on the utes for our 10th win in a row against those aggies...who even though they lose every single game, still talk smack because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain if they happen to pull out a miracle win...
bob | 1:05 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
I miss the Utes. I was a long time seaon ticket holder but gave them up when they sold out to comcast and the mountain network. I stayed with them thru the good and bad but not thru that cheap trick. Comcast isnt worth having so for me its goodbye utes...

Mr. Rock, you're hilarious! Ask around.
ironute | 1:55 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
fire the whole staff and get someone that knows how to recruit. 3 years ago we finish 4th in the nation. What happen to recruiting? Its not just bad play but call it like it is. These coaches do not and cannot recruit period. FIRE THEM ALL. EVERY LAST ONE.
dave | 1:56 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Brad...

WOW... What a column... you are an incredible talent I cant believe the D-News has been able to keep you on staff... You are hilarious. Man making light of season ending injuries and a teams shortcomings great article...
sorry4utes | 1:58 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
I knew back when Urban left the U like a doormat the only way the program had to go was down. Whit was a fool to think that he could continue the glory. Urban had the revolutionary offense and hand picked his crew for Florida. Kyle right now I bet you wish you were on that bus. If it wasn't for greed you could have gone along to coach for a national championship team! The team "down South" (as our last good coach said) is shaking their heads. We have to win at home tomorrow or the season is over. Any team can beat a ranked opponent if they play with the right mindset as evident. We need to repeat what we did against UCLA and be consistent. That falls on your shoulders KW, not AL and not GA. Speed of the leader is the speed of the team! Salvage your career while there is time!

as a new mexico .fan i thought we were harsh on coach long. guys utes have been a great team for a while. every team has a down year the ucla game proves utes have talent. dont give up on them you may not contend but you will be a pain for the teams that contend except for the lobos
davidutefan | 2:55 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
I'm predicting 3-9 but, I'll still be in the stands to cheer them on. My team through thick and thin
+1 Jake! | 3:06 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
A true Ute here. There are really only about 20K of us around, the rest are just bandwagoning. This is my team. I am dying with them. Every program is going to have its ups and downs, I hope this is the bottom. The current coaching staff blew an unblievable opportunity and it is time for a change.
Jake is smart.
Brad is not funny.
We are back to "only two games matter" status of the program. But I am still here.
Oh, and quit whining about Comcast and the Mountain. REAL UTE FANS find a way to follow their team. GO RED!
Rock off | 3:12 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
I am the first to admit that this year has been unacceptable and horrendous for the Utes. However, leave it to Brad, the ultimate Ute hater, to take a dig at the team on the hill and try to spin it like he is trying to motivate or be objective. Be a man Brad, and admit you cannot be a professional journalist when reporting on the Utes. Once again your true colors are littered throughout your lame article.
Fire Kyle? | 3:20 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
For all you "fans" begging that all the coaches be fired, let me ask you this question. Who should be hired to replace Whittingham? Who could do a better job? We got lucky when Meyer was hired. Few knew who he was. Are you thinking we can get lucky again? I submit to you we have a far better chance of getting a coach worse than Kyle than getting a better one.
Yes, Fire Kyle. | 3:54 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
Occasionally good coaches have to be fired. You see it all the time in all levels of sport. A good coach is fired if he has lost the respect of his players or lost the ability to motivate them. This may by Kyle's 3rd year as head coach. However, for players in their fourth or fifth year in the program they have been exposed to him for that period of time. He has lost the ability to motivate and coach. Yes, a worse coach may be hired, but what do we gain from the motivation of a new coach and program. The players will respond more positively.
The truth about recruiting. | 4:02 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
It is funny to hear people bring up the recruiting issue after the results of just one season. It takes a lot more than just 1 good season every decade to bring in good recruits. From 1976 - 1985 BYU had excellent records, one undefeated and many with only 1 or 2 losses and they still would get "out"recruited by some BCS teams that never have had that kind of success. When it comes down to it, I blame it on the coaches, not for poor recruiting, but for poor utilization of what they have. Lavell Edwards molded players to become excellent, he didn't wait to get all the excellent players to be successful. Even though the utes had good players in 2004, I don't believe Ronnie Mac would have been able to use the talent as good as Urban did. Coaching, play calling, and good preparation play huge roles in winning!
fire kyle | 4:18 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
How could it get worse than 1-3 rightnow, and if they lose to Utah State i can't see them winning another game. If They don't beat Utah State he's done!! Not even beating UCLA is going to save him. We will realize that UCLA will finish in the middle of the P-10 and that win will not be all that great!! They need to hire Dan Mullen's the OC at florida and the Quarterbacks coach when he was here with Urban!!
Urban Legend | 4:27 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
I'd like to solve the puzzle, Pat.

Urban was there for two years. He didn't leave Utah like a doormat, Utah was the doormat he wiped his feet on while ND and FLA forught over him. Quit riding his Jock.

You have a great coach, but he will never have a chance as long as his players listen to you Ute Fans bad mouth Kyle. He can be a great head coach. He had a smoother start than Bronco, but the fans gave Bronco a chance.

You next coach will not have a chance either.

Face it, you are the UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, at this point you are not even a Boise State. Give someone a chance to build a real program. You will never get a quality program and coach until you get a quality fan base.

Football Fan
w69 | 11:39 p.m. Sept. 28, 2007
I watched the game and I was embarrased that players quit on a great coach. I am convinced after watching the game that kyle had a great game plan, he prepared the players, and they did not execute. I did not see a single coach on the field running the football playing defense or blocking or tackling, yet i did see a bunch of kids get run over by Frank the Tank Summers. I hope that Kyle gets tougher, that the kids decide to be men and play football, and they turn this around.
The Utes will win on Saturday, and they will go to a bowl game. Yeah right after pigs fly.....
And when this team really learns to listen to coach whit
To w69 | 1:16 a.m. Sept. 29, 2007
Okay you can blame the players for UNLV loss but this his KW 3rd year how long are you willing to blame the players the HE is recruiting? There's no discipline on this team and when a coach keeps on saying he "can't figure out" whats wrong with HIS team then its time to bring in someone that can.
from w69 | 7:09 a.m. Sept. 29, 2007
the utes have gone to two bowl games under coach whit and have won both of them. the nfl has drafted from the u for years including the past two years. The Utes beat a ranked pac 10 team and oh by the way the y melted down against same team. And the Utes under whit and the previous coaches err the Urban Legend may he rest in peace and the current wanna be at Webber High... The Utes will be fine this year how many of the other MWC teams can say four straight bowl wins and yeah two of the four with present coach. I hope they the "kids" will start playing. Its hard to figure out what happpened when players have great practices and then quit in the game...... So quit whinining about a bowl bound coach and fill up the seats in Rice Eccles. Even in Crowton's worst years the Y was getting 50,000 plus inside Lavell Edwards stadium
utefanfrombeginning | 10:46 a.m. Sept. 29, 2007
This is really a typical year for the utes if you block out urban in the mix. They usually are always inconsistent. I bet they beat BYU this year. But I WANT CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS, and you don't get those losing the first two of three games like WHIT has done. UNACCEPTABLE. WE WANT consistent football with a team that is playing for something when october rolls around. NO STOBARTS, NO FASSELLS, NO WHITS.
Typical Year | 12:49 p.m. Sept. 29, 2007
If this is going to be another typical year for Utah, I guess we'll beat BYU... which has been the case 4 of last 5 years, and 9 of last 14 !
Right | 1:09 p.m. Sept. 29, 2007
Here's another way to look at. From 2000 thru 2006 U've won 4 times and BYU has won 3. Wow, some real domination going on there. And you "guess" you'll beat BYU this year? You mean like you guessed you'd beat us last year and guessed you'd beat UNLV this year? Right...please step away from the bong.
to Right: | 5:55 p.m. Sept. 29, 2007
Nobody guessed we would beat byu last year...we hoped for it, but we had a pretty rough year (not as rough as this year has been) and byu had their best team of the past 10 years, so byu should have whooped on utah...

when these two teams meet, you never know who is going to win...we could have 2 wins when we meet and byu could have 9 and it would still be a toss-up between the two...
utah county cougar | 7:12 p.m. Sept. 29, 2007
if the only way you can have a successful season is to beat BYU then you have a real problem. Why not going t a bowl game and winning it again, why not do something to fill the stands, why not win a conference championship again like you did with the Urbane Legend, If beating BYU is your only hope of having a successful season then get ready for a big letdown, newsflash the game is played in Lavell edwards stadium this year and oh by the way Max Hall is really really good and so is Harvey Unga, sorry but the future of this season is already nowhere, so you might as well stay home from the games like you usually do and wait til next year
