Your summary statement regarding this article is misleading and stated out of context implying there is something wrong with Utah's prison population having such a high percentage of whites in prison compared to the rest of the Country, when in fact, the article taken as a whole indicates that the problem in Utah, the same as with the Country, is that there remains an over-representation of minorities in prison, including in Utah.

So, are we to believe that if we "give" minorities a diploma, problem solved? Remember the adage "you can lead a horse to water, but you can,t make it drink.

Richard

Just because you give someone a diploma or a job does not decrease the offenders recidivism. What has to happen and has been proven to decrease recidivism is changing the way the criminal thinks. Giving someone a diploma does not changing the persons thinking. Offenders but go through the change process of changing their thinking. And yes, people with addictions should not go to jail or prison, they should be sent to SA treatment facilities. Prisons and jail do not rehabilitate and addict it makes them worse. Sending someone to prison of a petty charge does not rehabilitate them it also makes them worse.

Utah is a predominately white state. The high percentage of whites in the prison system seems to be a natural by-product of the states racial percentages.

i think that it is a good idea to reduce the number of inmates the in the jails it is rediculous how they are getting to full

that is not very cool 4 putting people in jail for small crimes ,that just over pack the jails

Mr. B

i graduated high school and went to prison before the ceremony of.PRISON DOES NOTHING FOR AND/OR TOWARDS ANYONES REHABILITATION.PRISON ENDS UP IN HATE AND DISMAY TOWARDS THE GOVERNMENT,LAWS AND TOWARDS AUTHORTY.IT ENDS UP IN FEEDING THE CRIMINAL MIND,NOT HELPING IT OR THE ONES INCARCERATED.DUE TO THE LACK OF THE AUTHORITES RESPONSIBILITY TO "INCARCEATEDS REHABILITATION."THE PRISON SYSTEM NEEDS TO CONCENTRATE ON HELPING INMATES FIND/DISCOVER CHANGE SO THE FALLEN CAN LEARN FROM THIER MISTAKES INSTEAD OF FEEDING HATE TOWARDS THE SYSTEM!
