Bush and Cheney think they can exempt themselves from prosecution for these crimes, but no self-respecting nation in the free world will tolerate this.

So commanders endorsed or tolerated abuse, yet it was the military's own investigation which led to media reports. Seems to take some blindness on the part of critics to not reconcile these views. I understand the impatience, but what should the military have done in the three weeks after the April 2004 report was produced? Immediately declare all guards guilty or fire everyone in the chain of command without process? Shut down the facilities and free all prisoners?

Regarding executive branch abuses of power, and GITMO: The USA Patriot Act is the problem. The Patriot Act is pretend legislation that has made judges dependent on its will alone, and probable cause can't find admittance before any magistrate. In other words; we have lost our fourth amendment right because of the blindness which exists in the congress. Senators Sue Collins, Jane Harmon, Joe Lieberman, and that group, have skillfully seized our guarantees through royal fiat. Just like "Carnivore" ( the electronic trap that scans our e-mail, and chat room files; the Patriot Act is contrary to everything our constitution stands for. From: TMS Oct. 27, 2007
