I had a very good experience with mission folk who came to my home here in Texas. They were wonderful persons and did nothing but great things I think they were supposed to do while they were here.
After many weeks of coming to the house, and excepting several meals together and an Christmas gift from my wife and myself, I had a spiritual moment where I received The Holy Spirit, I could not ask for any better treatment than these two missionarys gave me. They were perfect angels. I stated going to church after twentyfive years. My wife and I have a new marriage, and I quit drinking.
All of this was happing and all of a sudden they are up and gone. I tried to talk with them and they hug up the phone on me. I and my wife went to Houston to talk the the President and he all but brushed us off. I am very disapointed in the fact that we can't even talk to them even today.
Twenty-seven years ago two sister missionaries came to my door in my tiny farming community. I listened to them and for some reason became friends with one of them. We were the same age but I was married with a toddler. I didn't convert from my Presbyterian faith to LDS but I have learned a great deal about religion, tolerance and human nature from my correspondence with my Utah friend over the years. We still exchange Christmas cards with our family news every year and I look forward to hearing from her. Mormons are not common in our part of Illinois and I like to think that because of my relationship with a missionary I can vouch for the goodness and faithfulness of people of the LDS faith. Likewise I hope my friendship has been enlightening to her about the goodness and faithfulness of gentiles.
Dear Willie - Though friendship is a natural outcome of missionary visits , one should be converted to Jesus Christ and his restored gospel, not to the missionaries. They serve only a few weeks in each area and move on to teach others. It would be difficult to keep in touch with the many hundreds of people they come to teach and know. I'm sure the mission president had no intention to cause you to feel 'brushed off' Please take no offence and enjoy your testimony of the restoration.
Dear Anonymous, You say friendship is a natural outcome of missionary visits, well I couldn't agree more with you and I was told I was there fiiends, but once they left I have not talked with them again, not that I haven't tried. You talk about converson, well I had been to the ward for two different meetings, and was well on the way to joining the LDS. After they left I was not interested in going forward with converting because it would be like changing doctors in the middle of a sickness, or lawyer in the middle of a trial. I don't think they have many hundreds of "friends" in five weeks. I would like to know how you cluld be "sure" the mission president had no intention to cause us to feel we were brushed off. About the time all this was happing one missionary elder was shot and killed, so we brought the mission president two cell phones so the sisters chould phone 911 if they had am emergency. He said he didn't think that was a good idea and that if they need to dial 911 they were in the wrong place. Daaa
