State's 'reading' tax may get the ax

The reading tax levy is capped @ .000121. This amounts to $20 on a home with a market value of $300K (tax value of $165K). To do away with the reading levy in the name of lower property taxes is political bologna. What it will do is guarantee that the funding available for the reading programs will go down over time.

A reading program that is seeing success is being potentially cut because of the "political bologna" in helping taxpayers lower their property taxes. Yet, the splitting of school districts (endorsed by the same legislature) would increase property taxes. Money from the general fund that could be used for these reading programs is being held for private school vouchers. It seems that our legislature and populace need to refine their list of priorities.
