When I was a boy and looked out over Salt Lake in the summertime from the East
Bench, I was proud to note that the amount of trees looked like a carpet of
green grass. There were no homes West of about Eighth West, then. It was just
desert, so there were no trees West of there. Now, there are many homes, in
fact a new City (West Valley), but still very few trees. That is sad!

In the 1930's, Howard John Engh ran for the Utah State Legislature on the
platform of Make Utah a State of Trees. Unfortunately, he lost. He was way ahead
of his time. It's good to see that Utah is now catching up to his vision.

Great idea but I wish there were an organized effort about how to go about
donating a tree. We have plenty of trees on our own property but would love to
donate one to a park or even out on the desert. Will someone come up with a
plan? Otherwise, it's too nebulous of a goal for the average person to
participate.

I support the idea. However that said , lets put in place a plan that plants
the right tree in the right place and adopt tree care standards for their care
over the years to come. It is of no use to plant them and have them butchered 15
years down the road. Please, no topping. Tree care in Utah is a joke but
getting better. Hire a ISA certified arborist for your tree work (I am one --
bye the bye) for some good tree care tips follow this link (non commerical
information) http://www.treesaregood.com/
