Thank you for the article. It was the first one I read about Mitt's wife. She definitely has an outstanding personality and knows the meaning of the word "trial". I see her very much as a wise, supportive and outreaching first lady. Go Mitt&Ann!
Minnie | 7:46 a.m. Sept. 13, 2007
For Mitt and Ann to expose themselves to all the negativity, scrutiny, and abuse that comes with a compaign is testimony of their tenacity and fittness to lead this great nation.
Such good examples.
We need more like them!
JSimons | 8:00 a.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Did Ann Romney really say "I have absolutely loved being on the campaign TRIAL" as it was printed in this morning's paper, or should it have been TRAIL?

I'm glad to hear Ann Romney is getting noticed as the strong, motivating woman that she is. Hopefully it will help dispel the belief that Mormon women are docile creatures. She is funny, smart, beautiful and living the American dream of having a fulfilling, happy life. She sets an example for women of every age of what a positive attitude and solid moral values can do for a family, a community, and hopefully a nation. If the presidential nomination were to be determined by who would be the greatest First Lady, Mitt would win hands down!

it doesn't say 'trial.' read more carefully.

Mormons Against Romney | 8:49 a.m. Sept. 13, 2007
This article started with the words: "All that many voters know about GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is he's Mormon".

Well, I respectfully disagree. Romney's faith, just like Joe Liebermans faith, is irrelevant to his political leanings as history as a public servant.

Most voters, or should I say - most Republicans - already know of Mitt Romney, and know that he is a liberal who does not reflect the values or concerns of the GOP. He is a fringe leftist who has a history of championing liberal causes. If his wife is anything like him, then it's comforting to know that they both with stay in Boston after Mitt concedes the GOP Primary to a conservative candidate (probably Fred Thompson). Who knows, maybe Sen. Clinton will add him to her ticket.
Ken Baguley | 9:30 a.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Now listen...Mitt and his family are great examples of the American Dream. They are wonderful people who want to make America the place for all of us to live and succeed in our Democratic Society...It appears their lives are perfection...Isn't that wonderful??? It sounds like there are those out there who want to find fault with even that. Let's get it together...Mitt is THE candidate with all the qualities we need in a president...Let's get behind him and support the good that he is demonstrating. I want to see him as president.

Mormons Against Romney,

Your liberalism seems to trump your intelligence. Too bad. Stop relying on DNC daily e-mails for you info. To state that somehow Fred Thompson is more conservative than Mitt Romney (not that FT isn't somewhat conservative) has exposed you as someone who refuses to research that on which you have already formed an (ignorant) position. It's too bad the country has as many of you as it does.

Have a good day!

What about McCain's wife, or Thompson's wife, or Obama? Does the Deseret News cover any one else other than Mitt?

>>Romney's faith, just like Joe Liebermans faith, is irrelevant to his political leanings as history as a public servant.>>

Not to me. I don't want a Mormon president. To me, the religion is a fairy tale, and I can't respect a president who subscribes to it.

Dear "Donning Asbestos Suit"

You said: "I don't want a Mormon president. To me, the religion is a fairy tale, and I can't respect a president who subscribes to it."

Mormonism is no more a fairy tale than Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, Islam, agnosticism, or atheism. The fact is, all of us (including you) choose which values, stories, lifestyles, and assumptions we want to embrace. Rather than make bigoted comments about a candidate's religious choices, I encourage you to join the twenty first century and learn to respect people with different values than your own.
Richard G. | 10:49 a.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Quoting from Michael Kinsley's column in the current issue of Time magazine:

"In the online magazine Slate a while back, editor Jacob Weisberg called Joseph Smith, Mormonism's founder, an "obvious con man" and wrote, "Romney has every right to believe in con men, but I want to know if he does, and if so, I don't want him running the country." Thus a third argument that religion can't be a private affair for a presidential candidate: what a person deeply believes says something about his or her character, which voters may wish to take into account. ...

"Proceed with caution here, of course. Every religion is full of doctrines and beliefs that may seem nutty to outsiders. Jesus could be seen as a snake-oil salesman if you don't buy the snake oil. Weisberg says Mormonism is different because it is so "recent," involving miraculous events in the 19th century in upstate New York. Well, I dunno. The patina of age may explain why Jesus' walking on water is easier to believe than Smith's golden plates and magic glasses. But it doesn't go far in justifying the distinction. For me, any candidate who believes in the literal truth of the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Book of Mormon or the novels of Jane Austen is probably too credulous to be President."

AMEN!!!!!!

To "Why more Mitt Stories?":

You definitely have a good point. I'm supporting Mr. Romney, but you would think he's already president by the exclusive focus Deseret Morning News puts on the guy.

Maybe they should do an article on the person who would take over Laura Bush's position if Hillary got elected....
G. Whit of Yorba Linda | 11:30 a.m. Sept. 13, 2007
For fifty years I have voted mostly against candidates that I disapproved of by voting for the one who better defines goals and aspirations that I can relate to. I voted for "W" because I disapproved of the others, not because I thought "W" was the answer to all problems. He obviously was not and is a disappointment, but still the better choice from among those running at the time, I felt. I now have a chance to support a candidate that I feel will give due justice to the call. It is refreshing to be on the positive voting side, secure in the belief that Mitt is the only candidate that has the experience to pull our beloved country out of the mess it is in, and begin the healing process. His faith is strong, but so is his honesty and dedication. Everyone may not believe in his Mormon faith, but you can be sure that he does. Indeed Mitt lives in a warped political arena. He has never retreated from his standards of honesty and integrity. His wife and kids; what a better picture of America can you find? When a candidate gets discarded because of his faith and personal beliefs, that alone is about as anti-american as it gets!
Mark B | 11:32 a.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Boy, so many angry people today. I just can't help questioning the premise Mrs. Romney is giving out (blithely accepted by DMN). "Oh, the life of the super rich is so dreadfully dull, you know. I shall forever rejoice in these days, as I am blessed to greet so many little people in dreary meeting venues in cities I used to only fly over. What a treasure it is to answer the same silly questions every day and to have each aspect of our personal lives held up to examination by total strangers whom we love so much. How utterly thrilling!! Having discovered this wonderful existence, I believe I shan't summer on Martha's Vineyard from henceforth. From this day forward, only politics - every day!!!"

It is interesting to see how fast a story on a canadates wife wanting to show all sides of her husband to the public because she believes in him and his stances went to bashing their faith. Did any of you ask just what those stances are? did anyone ask if maybe their marriage is perfect because they really believe their vows of till death do us part. Did anyone think maybe they communicate with each other and work to make their marriage perfect. How ever you look at it she is a strong confident women in her own right and just might have the answers everyone is looking for to judge if Mitt is the canidate to vote for. Then again maybe she will show he isn't. As to stories on other canidate wives I have read one on Mrs Obama in the Deseret awhile back that improved my impression on her husband. As for Mrs Clintons hubby I will not vote a sexual preditor back into a position of power. Yes the double standard was in the political arena with that man if he hadn't been in politics he would have been prosecuted in Arkansas and been on the official sex offenders registories. So people keep an open mind listen to all sources available pick the best canidate in your opinion and vote. Don't bash each other or them. It just lowers the world opinion of America when you do. no I do not live in Utah but read hear for information to make my decision for voteing. Others around the world read here to judge you and see what the hoopla is all about. You warn your kids to be careful what they post you should also. Have a nice day .

Thank you for this nice and well written piece. Anyone who criticizes Anne or Mitt are just jealous of their success, happiness and harmonious relationship and life. No need to get down on them, why don't people celebrate this and get behind them so we can have this at the head of the country? Go Mitt and Anne!
Articles about Mitt | 12:08 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
They wrote about Anne because she was here. Obama's wife wasn't here, neither was Guiliani 13th wife. They wrote about Ann because she was here and was gracious enough to talk a bit with the reporter. Think about questions before you pose them.

Now, i don't intend to make this a religion bashing thing, but I do feel justified -- even obligated -- to respond as to why I wouldn't vote for Mitt.

You said: "Mormonism is no more a fairy tale than Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, Islam, agnosticism, or atheism."

Well, actually to me it is. Much more so. And as a life long resident of this fine state who knows LDS "theology" pretty darn well, and as someone who has studied mainstream religion a great deal, I am perfectly justified in holding this opinion, and i have no reservations in holding it.

I don't expect, nor ask, you to agree with me.

But don't tell me I am bigot because my education leads me to come to the same conclusion about this "religion" that millions of other people have come to.

There are times when calling people a bigot is probably warranted. this is not one of them. Simply saying you disagree with me, will do just fine!

Mormons Against Romney | 1:56 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
I really don't know we contunie to talk about "Mormonism" when it comes to Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney is a Mormon. So what?!? He does not represent MY faith or THE faith. He is one candidate and one Mormon. That's it.

Furthermore, for anyone to suggest that Mitt Romney is more conservative than Fred Thompson, denies the liberal history of a liberal politician.

Mitt Romney is PRO-ABORTION, PRO-GAY RIGHTS, and PRO-GUN CONTROL.

He's not welcome in the PARTY OF REAGAN!!!

Anonymous,

So how would you clasify all other "mainstream religions?" If they are not fairytales than what would they be? How about Mike Huckabee, a devout baptist? Would you vote for him because his religion is based in reality?

Or what about Obama-Muslim (idealogically) and Hillary-methodist? Who would you vote for? I don't see many leading candidates who profess there is NO God. So what are your choices?

I do disagree with you, but I think you get the response the same reason you reacted to the "bigoted" comment. If you leave out the details on "why" you think mormonism is a fairytale, you are going to get the answer without the "why" they think you are bigoted. Just a thought.
MB | 2:43 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
I think "Mormons Against Romney" is way too late shutting the Party gate on poor Mitt. And Reagan didn't evict Mitt himself, so let's agree that he's adequately GOP. The group I'm looking for would be named something like "Mormons Against Torture", which apparently Mitt would also not be part of. But surely most of you good LDS folk would be with me, right? Right? Anybody......?
Carol in Punta Gorda, Fl | 2:53 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
I read these comments and think to myself, why can't Romney be judged for what he has done in the Political arena. He turned Massachusetts around in a Democratic State. He got the Olympics straightened out. Maybe he has money but I am sure using his brain had a lot to do with his success. Being a Mormon shouldn't have anything to do with how effective he could be as a President. Did being a Catholic hinder what President Kennedy did in office?
In the crazy world in which we live to day, the mere fact one believes in God and has a Faith ,gets one strike against you We need more people running for office with a clear conscience and a solid background. More power to him and his wife. Carol D

"All that many voters know about GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is he's Mormon something his wife, Ann, said she's trying to change..."

Classic! I'll go ahead and assume this is merely a dangling modifier issue, but it sounds like you're saying that Ann is so sick of all the Mormon questions that she's trying to talk Mitt into becoming an Evangelical Christian? I suppose it wouldn't come as much of a surprise given his past flip-flops.

Mitt and Anne,
You are too squeaky clean for dirty America, American wants someone to be Pres. who is dirty, a cheater, a liar, fornicator, a manipulator, and someone who believe in no god. You see most of them will rip you apart when you want to do good for this country. More power to you two and the rest who wants to do good. One wise man said: "Evil will prevail when good men or women do NOTHING." From all of US in America who want the best for our future. Please don't give up pulling for ya.
Mormon Republican | 8:03 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Mitt Romney is "too squeaky clean for dirty America"?!?

Mitt Romney is a filthy politician that will say and do anything to win an election - whether it's a 3rd Grade Class election, or the GOP ticket. He's infested the Republican Party.

I voted for Reagan/Bush 80.
I voted for Reagan/Bush 84.
I voted for Bush/Quayle 88.
I voted for Bush/Quayle 92.
I voted for Dole/Kemp 96.
I voted for Bush/Cheney 00.
I voted for Bush/Cheney 04.

I will never vote Mitt Romney - PERIOD!

Mitt Romney is a disgusting liberal politician from a disgusting liberal state. So was his father, George Romney. George Romney did everything he could to steer the party to the left of Barry Goldwater and to the far left of Richard Nixon. I don't care if Mitt Romney is a Mormon. Bo Gritz was a Mormon - so what? Harry Reid is a Mormon - so what? Bill Orton is a Mormon, went to BYU, and represented Provo in the US House from 1991-1997. That doesn't excuse the fact that Bill Orton was a filthy socialist - just like Mitt Romney.

Whatever personally qualities Mitt Romney has as a Mormon, I say good for him.

As a NATIONAL LEADER, he has no redeeming qualities and no leadership abilities for conservative principles and Republican values.

I take great satisfaction in the knowledge that Sen. Fred Thompson will beat Mitt Romney in the GOP Primary, like a Government Mule!
Concerned about Romney | 8:26 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Mitt Romney is the same as Al Gore, if elected he will hit us with huge oil/gas/coal taxes.

Do some research: Romney will be in Silicon Valey next week fundraising. His main organizer there is Jennifer Fonstad, who ran Mitt's 1994 Senate campaign. Fonstad is Venture Capitalist who invests heavily in alternative energy, people like her need huge government help to make these technologies competetive. For example, Fonstad is the Board Chairman of GreenFuel Technologies, which makes biodiesel from algae. The technology is extremely expensive, it won't compete with oil/gas unless it is $10/gal. Are you ready for $10/gal. How about $20/gal. How do you think you win elections in Mass if you don't share the GlobalWarming-AlGore hysteria. Just do some research and use your heads...
Lewt | 8:40 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Hey, M.R., don't be shy. Tell us how you really feel. Are your memories of Romney Sr. yours, but then you just started to vote in '80? If you voted for Goldwater in the 60's, then how's the Social Security and Medicare working out? Have you put your weight behind any other actors besides Reagan and Thompson? I hear Tony Danza is really tough on Terror.
Michelle | 9:12 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Why do all of you care which religion the candidates are? Weren't the forefathers religious? They came to America to escape religious persecution. We should be more concerned with who will lead this great country in the right direction, rather than if they go to church on Sunday or not. Personally, I would rather have a President, Mormon or not, who has a belief in something other than just himself. I would not want to run this country on my own, without a higher power on my side. Look at the person and not the religion.
Lenny | 9:20 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
What does Tony Danza have to do with Mitt and Anne Romney's love affair with socialism?

Gov. Romney is not a very good man if he needs to lie so much and cheat the taxpayers of Massachusetts. Then again, if Massachusetts elects Kerry and Kennedy every election, then they deserve to have an liberal governor.

I will never vote for Mitt Romney. Mitt is so evil and crooked, he used Larry Craig as his top dawg in the Mountain West. I think Craig and Romney have disgraced the Republican Party.

Say no Romney/Craig.
Bill W. | 9:22 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Heck ya! I learned about the Higher Power in AA! It's part of the second step.

Mitt Romney needs serenity. He's dishonest.

frozenchosen | 9:59 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
For those of you who support Fred Thompson; please tell me the last Republican senator to get elected president? You may have to go back a ways - 118 years to be exact. Benjamin Harrison in 1889 was the last Republican to go from the Senate to the Whitehouse. If Fred is nominated he has no chance of being elected - our country simply does not elect senators to be president very often - especially republican senators.

The only men who have a chance of beating Hillary are Mitt and Rudy, because they are the only ones with executive experience and management capability. I think that voters instinctively realize that being a senator does not prepare you for the Whitehouse as well as being a governor or vice-president(being mayor of NYC is as good as being a governor).

It would be suicide for republicans to nominate a senator to go against senator Clinton, whose virtual co-presidency with her husband would surely give her an edge.

Read your history folks, Fred ain't the guy.
Schmukatelli | 10:21 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
What does Mitt Romney have executive experience in? Administering an international scandal such as the 2002 Utah Games?

Mitt Romney is lucky he isn't behind bars right now. He's lucky that a liberal activist judge such as David Sam, presided over such a dismissal.

If it's been so long since a GOP senator was elected to the oval office, perhaps it's time for a change.

This country just cannot take another turn to the left. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid found a turncoat in Chuck Hagel and Lincoln Chaffee. I was extremely disappointed when John McCain tried to hijack the Republican Primary in 2000. He had some major nerve running against Gov Bush. Now, Romney is doing the same crap. This country just cannot afford another liberal lawmaker.

This country's only hope is in Fred Dalton Thompson.
true blue | 10:41 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Schmukatelli, If a man can unite the two parties that is what I'm looking for, because it means something will get done.

The divide between the two parties is widening and we need a uniter and that is what Mitt would bring to the table.

Fred Thompson will probably fizzle before the end, Mitt is already organized and has a good plan in place, while fred will be scrambling.

Huckabee is probaably the most conservative, but he has no chance against hillary.
Carly | 10:49 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Frozenchosen,

Kennedy and Johnson were both senators. So was Kerry and Edwards. Al Gore and Joe Leiberman were both Senators (Gore being the senator from Tennessee, and then being the president of the senate). Those men were Democrats.

Republicans are the ones who will make a difference and change the course that Reid and Pelosi are treading.

What makes a Republican senator unelectable? The fact that he is a Republican? That's a weak excuse to vote for Mitt and Rudy. Mitt and Rudy are pro-gay and pro-abortion.

Mitt Romney is one of the reasons that Republicans lost the House and Senate in 2006. America put their trust in Gingrich, Lott, and Dole in 1994. They were conservatives. By 2006, conservatives were so digusted by the efforts of Mitt, Rudy, McCain, Hagel, Chaffee, Jeffords, and Colin Powell, that they didn't come to polls - only to let the democrats take a lame-dame advance on the nation's capital. I was so digusted with Bush's pick of Harriet Meyers, that I didn't vote in 2006.

Fred Thompson is the only hope to take the Republican Party back to it's roots. We can't let Rudy and Mitt water the party down. We cannot stand by and let Mitt and Anne Romney poison our minds with their dishonest rhetoric. Mitt Romney's goverment didn't last in the Soviet Union. It didn't last in East Germany. It's not working in North Korea.
Dave R. | 10:56 p.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Just because "a man" can prostiture himself to the democrats, doesn't mean he is "uniting two parties".

Frankly, true blue, I really don't care what Mitt Romney has to offer the democrats. I'm not a democrat, and I won't vote in the democratic primary.

I am a Republican, and I will vote in the Republican primary. You democrats can keep Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton, Barrack Obama, and Walter Mondale.

You are right in the fact that Huckabee is very conservative. I feel that Fred is the one that will get the ticket though. He is really the only one who can beat Rudy. McCain is gone and so is Romney. Romney can woooo Hollywood and Provo all he wants. He'll crumble in South Carolina.

See ya'll in Charleston. I'm with Fred. Pass the grits.

Only an uninformed person would vote for Fred Thompson or a "Star Struck" voter. Wake up people!!! Television and movies are not the real world. Have your heard of "Actors"????? What worthwhile accomplishment has Freddie done for our country? Name something he accomplished while in the Senate. Come on. I know you've got to dig deep. Real deep. Sure, he was a Senator, but a "Lazy"one. Did you read the article in Newsweek "Lazy as a Fox". He is known to be lazy. I don't know about you, but I do not want a lazy President of the United States. And look at him today. His health does not look good. He had cancer. Cancer people! If you really cared about this country, you would know deep down inside that Mitt Romney is a worker, an intellect, a problem solver, and surrounds himself with the best people. He has integrity. Yes integrity. You probably need to look it up in the dictionary, because it is obviously unfamiliar to you and your candidate of choice. Go ahead and waste your vote on Lazy Fred because the majority of us will vote for a "winner" and bring Mitt Romney and his precious wife to the White House. And to you newcomers to Utah who bash the state, go find another state to plant your ugly existence.

you are prime examples of Satan at his best. You are mean spirited and evil. Why don't you just leave Utah and go live somewhere else..... afterall the "Mormons" founded Utah and were there first. You will never be able to stop the Lords work so just give up!

Oh, and go Mitt
Geneva | 12:02 p.m. Sept. 14, 2007
Mitt Romney is smarter, more accomplished, has more integrity and more brains than the rest of the candidates put together. He is incredibly bright and never makes decisions without studying a problem from every angle and getting lots of input, both pro and con. He would make a fabulous president. Plus he is a Conservative!

What a great world this would be if all the venomous energy spent in this "Add your comment" was given to help the poor and the needy. I think it is called SERVICE. Try it. There are so many who are "in need" through no fault of their own and who would appreciate even a kind word, a little something like those many who went through the earth quake in Peru, recently. Even a tooth brush!!!
It may just make you feel good, rather than so negative.

I'm totally amazed and disgusted at the number of people calling Mitt Romney a liar and a liberal! I promise you he is neither of those things! He has so much integrity and love for this country and if our country ever needed someone with those two qualities it's NOW! Our country is in a mess and having a president like Romney would at least set an example of goodness. Would you rather have Hilary and BILL in the White House? They are the exact antithesis of honesty, integrity and are manipulative and hypocritical - and may even be murderers. I can't begin to understand why people in this country would want them leading our country. Let's have someone whom we can be proud of around the world and who would set great examples for all of us. Instead of criticizing their marriage and their family, how about looking to them and finding out why they were able to accomplish these great feats - and trying to follow them?

What a joy it would be to have a president of Romney's caliber to say nothing of his experience and his brilliance and his leadership! To have all of that in one person would be heavenly for a change! GO MITT! GO ANN!
Corilee | 2:55 p.m. Sept. 14, 2007
If you really want to know what Romney stands for rather than accepting the pablum that the Mormon-haters are trying to cram down your throat go to Mitt Romney's web page.

The more I look in to his campaign, his values and his qualifications the more impressed I am. He has the most clearly thought out proposal for the issues that face our country of all the candidates yet. He is able to articulate his position so well that he will convince any who take the time to listen or read and not prejudge based on their biases.

And those of you who call Romney a liberal are up in the night without even a small candle to light your poor, dark minds. As one of the other comments here said.... get a life (or die in the dark.)
Jen Taylor | 5:47 p.m. Sept. 14, 2007
Being Canadian, obviously I cannot vote. Sure wish I could! I'd vote for someone with integrity, lots of smarts plus leadershup experience.
I understand the "flip-flop" criticism. Isn't it possible to change one's opinion as one gains new knowledge on a subject - aren't we open-minded enough to change opinion as we gain further info, or are we just too closed-minded (and chicken) to change admit we've changed.
Is Mitt's life too "squeaky-clean" for present USA?
That's so sad. GO MItt GO!
