In the end, UCLA did what was necessary to get the W. But, Pac-10 officiating continues to be atrocious. (remember OU?) There's no point in reviewing calls if (1) there are only 2 camera angles and (2) the call will always stand in favor of the Pac-10.
One of those games like BC last year that we truly should've won.
Attended the game in the beautiful Rose Bowl and came away feeling a bit like Oklahoma did last season at Oregon..."homered" by PAC 10 refs. Every call and subsequent review was called in favor of UCLA even several that may have cost us the game. And any call that was the least bit controversial, they would not show the replay on the big screen-further frustrating Cougar fans.
May sound like sour grapes, but we definitely outplayed them in almost every facet of the game. However they got the calls/breaks and we did not. The team from the BCS power conference was supposed to win and their refs did every thing possible to make sure they did.
Can hardly wait for pay-back time next year in Provo!
UCLA was very lucky to get the win. The 2 fumbles were very close calls and could have gone either way. I'm not surprized they both went to UCLA.
I'm encouraged by the rapid development of Max Hall. He did very well as they opened up the game plan a little bit more for him. He was far and away the best quarterback on the field today.
Unga had another great day. Too bad he didn't get more touches. He could have made an even bigger difference. I love Vakapuna too death, but the guy has just not been effective running the ball since his injury last year. The coaches certainly have not lost faith in him since he was the featured back today. I hope that can regain his pre-injury form.
Great to see and hear such a large BYU crowd at the Rose Bowl! Very impressive... nice job Kev and the rest of the Cougar Faithful!
I predict that BYU will win the conference this year. No offense TCU, but TCU has no offense.
I've rambled enough; Good night.
Utah's cougars proved to be mere kittens in the lion's den of the Rose Bowl. I hope their locker room had enough kitty litter. Like a bowl of milk, BYU was licked.
At the game on Saturday as I was walking out many of the Bruin fans felt BYU was the better team. I am sure it was because BYU was the 2nd half with the exception of the few mistakes BYU made in the second half. You can't spot a team 20 points and not put the game in serious doubts.
I don't know how they didn't reverse the Hall "fumble"
The ball didn't just fumble out of his hands, it rocketed out of his hand and that could only happen if it was passed. Not a fumble at all.
Pac10 refs for you, not to mention all the other penalties against BYU, but only 4 against UCLA...or did UCLA just play that perfectly? Yeah, right.
Funny how bad reffing always goes against BYU...
The defense played well, and the offense got some good yards. Too bad they couldn't put a complete game together. BYU can still have a good season, though I wish they hadn't scheduled Eastern Washington. WEAK!!! Utah State would have made much more sense.
I had a sick feeling through the first two quarters. The third quarter was as good of football as I've seen the Y play in recent years. After the loss, I watched 2 hours of The Office re-runs just to curb my angst. After reading this article, I feel much more settled in the fact that this BYU team is going to be very good. They weren't good enough today, but this loss will pay dividends further in the season. There were many positives that can be taken. Max Hall to Austin Collie is going to be fun to watch for the next three years.
I was at the game, and it was awesome. BYU is a power on the rise. BYU's freshmen and sophomores were thrashing UCLA's vaunted senior-laden defense. BYU is just going to keep getting better and better and better....
There you Deseret News guys go reminiscing about the past - the '84 Holiday Bowl, beating the #1 team in the country in 90. Yup, you even mentioned that Detmer won the Heisman. Im surprised you didnt mention the Miracle Bowl and that you had hoped for a Hail Mary to beat UCLA yesterday. Can't you write an article without referring to the earlier days? While these things are a part of our BYU football heritage, these incessant references and comparisons to the past are vain and disheartening and just not relevant.
If all I knew was the score, I would be content with the outcome of the game, but because I know how well - and how poorly - BYU played at times, I can't help but be disappointed. On the other hand, the future looks bright, once we clean up our game.
Pac 10 Officials 1 BYU 0. Every replay went against BYU.
FYI an entry from the Orange County Register Blog: Thank goodness we had our refs. Bruins were outplayed the entire game, and if we didn't get the calls like we did, well. . .Thank goodness we didn't have MTN west officials. Learn to play BRUINS, we won't always have our refs to help.

Now I'll retire to bedlam, assured that the sun will also rise in the Crossroads of the MTN West.
UCLA is a good football team, but their win was a result of the typical "homecookin" that persistently takes place in the PAC 10 against non-conference foes. I predict a decimated Ute team will handle them next week.
Surprised to find my comment from late last night missing this morning. Who would believe it-censorship in the DMN? My offense? A simple insinuation that BYU was "homered" by PAC 10 officials much like Oklahoma was robbed at Oregon last year.
This loss is very difficult to swallow-much more so than last season's early loss to Boston College. This was truly a game that BYU deserved to win. Watched both the "phanthom Max Hall fumble" and the whistled dead BYU interception over and over again on a friends tivo and fail to understand exactly why both calls on the field were upheld in favor of the home PAC 10 team.
Suppose it will forever remain a mystery-but certainly gives me some emphathy for my friends from Oklahoma who found themselves in a similar situation last September in Eugene.
Look forward to some payback next year in Provo!
I loved Bronco's comment about the fact that we Cougar faithful saw "bits and pieces of what this team will become".
I thought that we were denied several chances at victory by a blatantly biased PAC-10 officiating crew. They, obviously, swallowed their whistles or were too timid to overturn calls after review, especially the one where they ruled Call had fumbled near the end of the game, when it was obvious in replay after replay that his arm was clarly moving forward on the pass play. The Cougs were, quite obviously, "homered" on the Bruins' home turf.
True, the Cougars didn't play four solid quarters, but between the biased PAC Officials and the lousy camera angles on Versus, it was an uphill battle, I still believe the Cougars were the better team!
sure is quite around here this morning
oh well at least it was tolerable to watch for part of the time,,,, not like my utes.
It was a good effort from a team that didn't quit, although a win would have been better. It was great to see Max Hall outplay the other quarterback. Hall will only get better! Awesome performance from a qb playing his second game and on the road against a good team. Go Cougars!
The way I saw the game, the cougars came out at the start like kittens, then played a little too conservative once in a hole.Sure the kittens didn"t get any help from the zebras but we expected that.(Esspecially after watching that cocky pac 10 offical strut on to the field at the start of the game. But all the mistakes are the reason we lost. Bronco's right on when he said,"I think we saw bits and pieces of what this team can become." I think we need to see more of a piece of Unga for starters. He needs more touches, and the other guy needs less.It was good to see the Cougars arrive in the third quarter. They made some good adjustments during half time. They were just already in too big of a hole.I like Hall, he's got it.I think the coaches will fine tune the offense and go with what works and BYU will have a good year.Unga;s the man!
