A crime of opportunity. I will have to use that next time I get caught stealing. This crime could have cost this girl her life. Had they not stollen the bike they would be where they are now 5 days ago. Impitent police.

On the news last night the two "kids" who stole the bike said through their attorney they didn't want to be seen as theives. Excuse me? They STOLE something. They ARE thieves, no ifs, ands or buts about it. It doesn't matter that they thought it was abandoned. The bike was not theirs. They took it. Therefore they stole it. End of story.
Jane | 11:20 a.m. Sept. 8, 2007
The people who stole the bike should be charged with theft regardless of the fact that they turned the bike in. The bottom line is they stole something. Right?

The three of you are correct. These people are thieves. They took something they knew was not theirs and had to cut a lock to take it. But, think for a moment, if they dumped the bike and didn't tell anyone, where would the police be now? What they did was wrong but they may have provided a piece of evidence that could help resolve this issue for this family.

If they were charged with theft, how quick will the next person be to come forward with information that law enforcement needs. Ask yourselves if this was your family, would you want the thief to come forward?

These people are thieves but they stepped up when they could have hid. Law Enforcement has to look to the greater good in situations like these so that not only this case, but future cases can be solved.

As a side note, stealing the bike is likely a Class B Misdemeanor, so are many traffic offenses. Have any of you ever been given a break? How many times have you passed an Officer while speeding and the officer never pulled you over?

To the Men and Women working this case, outstanding call, keep incouraging anyone with possible information to come forward and not fear the consequences. May you bring this event to a close for this family.

Let's quit quibbling about the thieves; let's concentrate on the missing person and present ideas to help.

I don't know if the news has been spread to other states but it needs to be so others can keep an eye out for this person.

Case in point: Concerning the missing Oregon (BYU)student -- the suspect is in Albuquerque NM awaiting trial about an incident on the University of New Mexico Campus with a female UNM student. He will eventially be sent back to Oregon to be arraigned.

This is why information needs to spread quickly!!! On the other hand I don't think anybody reads these comments anyway.

When exactly was this bicycle taken? Could the removal of the bicycle been the catalyst for Camille's disappearance, perhaps causing her to look for alternate transportation and thereby causing her to be put in harm's way with some stranger? Or, was the bicycle taken days later? I would think this would and should be a big deciding factor in whether or not to charge the bicycle thieves. If its removal caused Camille to be put in harms' way, they should definitely be charged.

I read the comments and I have a question for Curtis (the first one who commented). What does impitent mean? I've never heard of it before. In the meantime, let's think of finding this young lady and whatever help we can give should be forthcoming. I'm not able to join a search party and I don't live in the Provo area or I would be there in a minute. How about the rest of you?
timeline | 2:22 p.m. Sept. 8, 2007
No, she went missing earlier: she was suppose to take an exam on Friday and missed it.

So whatever happened to her, happened before the bike was found and stolen, probably a good 24 hours before.

Here's a rough timeline:

The bike thieves first saw the bike on Saturday night and went back to steal it late at night (probably early Sunday). That was Sep 1st/2nd.

She was last seen (positively) by her roommate on Aug 30th, although someone claims to have seen her on her bike, about 5 or 6pm, that same day.

According to a radio report I heard today, her roommate reported that the boyfriend (Sperry) left
four notes on Camille's door on Thursday and Friday (morning), each wondering where she was and asking for her to contact him. (Obviously, one would have served the purpose.) That was August 30th/31st.

The 31st was also the day her debit card/PIN was used at the convenience store near her apartment.

MHE,
I am from Montana and I think the word has been spread very well. I had a non-mormon friend come up to me today at a soccer game to express sympathy about Camille. I have seen it on CNN Headline news and Fox News. I check everyday on this Deseret News Website as a former BYU Alumni.
Let's all quit telling people they are wrong to think the way they do and let the police do their job. This case is being handled very well. Also, to the Officer who wrote. You had very excellent points and I thank you for your words. Prayers for Camille and her family!
Confused | 4:07 p.m. Sept. 8, 2007
I am confused. If they really believe it was Camille who used the debit card on Friday, where did she spend the night on Thursday night??
To: Officer | 4:10 p.m. Sept. 8, 2007
What you said makes sense however, not always do the laws and judicial officials make the "right" decisions. My father was MURDERED and the killer is walking free today. She is known and was never charged to the full extent of the law thanks to Neal Gunderson. So just because they are police doesn't mean they are perfect.

You armchair detectives crack me up.
Kirk | 8:33 p.m. Sept. 8, 2007
Strange that her debit card was used the next day. And strange that her bike was found in the canyon. She may have run off or been abducted or she may have had an accident in while hiking.

My prayers are with Camille, her family and those looking for her! I have a 22 year old daughter at BYU and a freshman son there as well. I'm worried sick over this! I'm 1,800+ miles away and feel helpless except for my prayers at this moment! Police and volunteers are doing the best that they can. I just pray "all is well"....Students: tell your roommates where you are going and when you plan to be back! Start a message board on your refrigerator for this. Young Men: I know this may sound dorkey, but no one is immune from evil these days! Better to be safe than sorry! No parent should ever have to face what these parents are facing! Be safe! Love, Mom
