South Salt Lake may want to buy Granite High
5 comments | Read story
Is splitting really going to help keep schools open? No. Granite should be closed as it is no longer needed.
If the city did buy Granite High, it would quickly fall into further disrepair, because the city has siphoned funds away from the Parks and Rec department and cannot even keep the weeds and the crumbling cement under control at the Columbus Center. The cost to maintain a property like Granite High would only further increase the citizen's tax burden after last year's 133% property tax increase.
South Salt Lake needs to demonstrate some level of fiscal responsibility before it runs off to make a sentimental purchase of this size.
I was at Granite when they decided to make the changes, but then I just transferred schools and I am SO happy I did. Cottonwood is a great school, and no one should complain about going there.
Granite District made these changes to save money, but I don't see how it's saving money when there are only 2 or 3 kids in each class. Send them to their home schools! With so few kids, it wouldn't be hard to make rooms and bigger schools in the district.
It would be POINTLESS for South Salt Lake to buy Granite to use for their city hall. Wouldn't it be more worth while to get a nicer building with no mold or cracks in the foundation?
And kids can seriously just go to Cottonwood. It isn't that far. And it's a great school. I love it. It is better than Granite in many ways. Unlike Granite, Cottonwood kids don't feel the need to constantly brag about being clique-less, and that everyone is friends. WE HAVE SPORTS!!!! Kids are so nice here. The campus is a lot nicer too. And there are more elective class opportunities at Cottonwood.
Granite is DUNZO and there is NOTHING you can do about it. Next earthquake in the Salt Lake valley, that place is GONE forever!

The other paradox is his comment that the school district "failed to make (Granite) a viable high school..." That's an interesting comment from a city which emphasizes industrial growth to the point where families are leaving the city.
How can you make a viable high school in a city that has just over 300 high school age students??
