Shame on Rocky Anderson for speaking his mind. That is the problem with Salt Lake- too many uppity non-members who feel as though they can have a voice in the community. Non-members need to learn their place and realize they are to be seen and not be heard. I am so thankful for Utah County, where I don't have to live around such filth.

When we are told not to exercise outside because of air pollution, and when the cheerleaders of the status quo ignore the risks as they slavishly support sprawl development around the state, I love it that Rocky stands up to the sprawl-developer powers that be. The Legacy highway is much improved because of the delay (lightrail, commuter rail and wetlands are addressed) and the delay is the fault of the overreaching transportation officials who violated the law as the courts confirmed. When our president stumbles into a debacle in Iraq that even Republicans (Hagel, Warner, McCain, etc.) say is a debacle, I love it that Rocky leads protests against the dominant powers to show there is some diversity in Utah's capital. I 'preciate Rocky's thin-skinned response to unfair attacks from the likes of Dave Buhler. We need more leaders with Rocky's courage to speak the truth to the monopolistic powers of this state. I love it that he fights like a cornered cougar in defending Salt Lake City from the disastrous decades of ill-guided church dominance of downtown (shutting the Hotel Utah, buying Main Street, imposing intolerant, comical liquor law, killing the malls with such poor planning, etc.). The anti-Rocky commenters remind me of the former opponents of lightrail. Thank goodness for the sensible voters of my birth city who helped elect him twice. It is a principle reason I live in SLC and can tolerate this too often intolerant state of Utah.

RangerGordan,
The biggest issue with Rocky is inability to bring people together to "SOLVE" a problem. He would rather tear a community apart than work to bring unity to the city.

All you SLC people who believes that Rocky is so Great (SLC Citzen, RangerGordan, etc) how many of you live west of I-15? In Rose Park, Glendale, etc. I bet they don't think Rocky has done a good job, since the west side of SLC has been mostly ignored in all the "Building Money" spent.

1- The Main Street plaza, the deal was made before rocky road showed up. He caused problems with and sided with the ACLU. Then after the courts turned againist the ACLU and it's phony law suit, Rocky jumped ship and all of a sudden sided with the church.

He could of said "Hey we have a problem here. Let's bring everyone in and see if there is a compromise that would be agreeable to all parties". But Rocky wanted to pit SLC Resident againist the church.

2- Legacy Highway - This where I have to laugh at all you Pro-Rocky people telling us outsider we have no business complaining about SLC Mayor since we do not live in SLC.

uh, Why did Rocky file a lawsuit againist the Legecy Highway that cost millions of dollar and time, when it did not even have anything to do with SALT LAKE CITY? He his an enviormentalist, I get that. But he is the Mayor of SLC and has no business pushing his personal beliefs on to those in DAVIS COUNTY!

So if you don't want to complain about YOUR mayor, then tell him to stay the heck away from OUR business.

Thing That Must Go | 5:25 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
A Thing That Must Go is anyone who makes a legitimate crticism of the LDS Church, or members of the LDS Church, being called "anti-Mormon". If you are LDS and you don't like the fact that someone critized the LDS Church and/or it's members, resorting to name-calling is intellectually weak. If you don't like the criticisms, address the criticisms. Defend yourself and/or your church in some intellectual way. Don't just call people names. That is weak. And if the criticisms are warranted, change your behavior!! No group is perfect, contrary to popluar belief in the State of Utah.
Everybody | 5:43 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
Why are you all turning on each other? You either like Rocky or you don't. Your not going to change anybody's minds with your diatribes! And I really don't understand why you are bringing your church into it. It is sounding more and more like the LDS and the non-LDS are fighting for points of religious view and that is just silly. You all have to live with each other! As far as Rocky goes... A lot of us here in California have been following the Utah news and Rocky's antics for a long time and have been laughing at his antics an far out ways. We are really going to miss him when he leaves...however, now we have our own LA Mayor who it seems is going be taking center stage!..... Be happy, variety of thoughts and minds make life interesting!
Lawrence, perhaps..... | 5:56 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
Lawrence, perhaps you could be more explicit about what you find Utah intolerant of.
Elijah | 6:22 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
If Rocky doesn't like Buhler, then you can be sure Buhler is the person I will be voting for.
Lawrence of Salt Lake City | 6:35 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
If it wasn't for Rocky, even more people around the world would fear Utah and the Mormons. Seen the polls showing many in the US say they will not vote for a Mormon for President? Grow up anti-Rockyites! Stop aligning with the Christian right-wingers who don't trust you but will take your money and votes. Watch Mitt's prospects as they turn to Huckaby and F. Thomson for fear of Mitt, the Mormon-btw I support his Republican candidacy. That is where you will see real bigotry against Mormons. Rocky is the best thing for SLC and the Church in a long, long time.

Regarding intolerance in Utah, where shall we begin? The bottom of the state? The UN in LaVerkin. Gays in Kanab. People who want to drink wine like Jesus or the multitudes who have drunk fermented beverages for tens of thousands of years; Utah makes it more difficult for them than almost any other state AND SOON WE'LL HAVE DIRECT FLIGHTS FROM PARIS. Gays and lesbians are not allowed to form civil unions, share health insurance or have reasonable adoption rights. People who want to breathe clean air are undermined by the sprawl-devoloper controlled legislature. Thank God, Governor Huntsman is tolerant and enlightened, like Rocky Anderson! Too bad for our economy and image that more are not.
Rob | 6:42 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
Rocky who? He gone, what more can be said.
James | 6:50 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
Rocky I do not presently live in SLC, however I did live on the East Bench in the 70's for two years. I am still a republican as I was in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.

I personally was impressed, living outside SLC Valley, with the citizens of SLC for voting you into two full terms as their mayor.

Should you have ran for office when I lived there, I more than likely would not have voted for you.

Your honesty in voicing your feelings and thoughts about the ineptness and criminal activity of our present Presidents administration was accurate, which is being proven every day, and courageous.

I wish you well in your next endeavor what ever it may be. And I congratulate you on a job well done.
Rocky is an idiot!!!! | 7:17 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
Rocky is a slimy, angry, ex-mormon who is upset that his gay, boorish behavior is against all he knows to be right. Bye bye loser!!!!

vote for JP HUGHES!!! I always thought health care was one of the most important issue facing us this election...Hughes is the only candidate with the ability and dedication to insure EVERY SINGLE WORKER of a SLC company. He is the only one that isn't bought by special interests. Why settle for more of the same...more cookie-cutter, life-long politicians who say one thing and do another...and if you pay close attention, Buhler and Jenny Wilson quote him on a daily basis (ie: more civility and humanity to the office) Hughes is refreshing and new and is the perfect candidate for mayor of Salt Lake City!

Lawrence of Salt Lake City - Get that big church conspiracy chip off your shoulder. So the problems of downtown are really due to the "ill-guided church dominance of downtown." Yep, they caused all the problems. If only Rocky got more bars on the blocks, a stip club a block from Temple Square and Nordstrom to stay in the downtown malls then DT would be energized, economically viable, with no crime problems... like say..Detroit. Brilliant. I suppose building that darn Temple in the middle of your birth city has brought things down.

You need to clear the clouded view point and see reality. The church is in effect bailing Rocky (and DiDi) out of the mess they had NO ANSWER for. Then to show his appreciation, he goes nutso over a sky bridge (that he agreed to when the project was proposed orginally). WIth a power strong enough to all that I gues we could just have a money in the mayors office - the church actually runs everyhing. I'll let others finish the punchline...

BTW you need to get out of SLC a little to see that mayors can actually have accomplishments - not just lawsuits.

A mayor's job (and actually influence) has very little to do with national politics and wars in the Middle East. Who cares what his view is? it is 100% irrelevant. His "courage" is actually stupidity and put SLC on a bunch of influential people's black list. Does'nt matter if he right (or wrong) just do what's best for the residents and shut the ole pie hole. How is he at keeping the city growing and safe? His antics are clearly ego driven and to focus attention away from the real record.

Let's Hope the next one is not so into his own ego that he can't fill the pot holes... like the last two years. Ask Rocky's staff ... oh never mind on that one.
Dave Buhler: Slumlords' Choice | 8:42 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
Driving around SLC you can't help but notice all the poorly kept rental buildings with signs for Dave Buhler. That should tell you what kind of people support him. Unfortunately for Dave, rental peasants get to vote too. You will lose Dave. You will lose big in the final election.
Terry | 9:06 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
I'm a long-time resident of SLC who didn't vote for Rocky Anderson in either election. No mayor in my memory has done less for the residents of SLC in 8 years than he has. We residents of the west-side of SL are still waiting for promised improvements, increased shopping, reduced crime, etc. Instead of spending time working for the interests of the city, Mayor Anderson has been working for the interests of Rocky while fighting with everyone that could get things done for the city.

He has been no leader. A leader maintains loyalty of his staff, works well with others, bridges gaps rather than create them, and gives credit where its due without claiming undue credit for himself.

He has been a poor administrator. A good administrator shows up for meetings, is prepared to discuss issues, focuses on the job at hand and doesn't let his own personality and agenda dominate.

Most, if not all, of the current candidates for mayor would be a vast improvement over Rocky Anderson. Dave Buhler is the best choice based on experience, ability to get things done, to listen and to work with other people. Thanks to Mayor Anderson for pointing that out.
Anonymous | 9:26 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
Hey Anonymous, come out of your stall. Are you serious when you contend that the Church does not dominate downtown? They dominate in part because they own more private roperty than anyone else. Have you noticed how downtown looks more like a neutron bomb site the closer you get to Temple Square? The blight predates DeeDee Coridini and probably started when intolerant types imposed their liquor laws after the visionary Brigham Young died. Notice how the biggest traffic jams are usually outside of SLC's wide streets that Brigham prophetically designed. Thank our lucky stars the Church helped produce another fine statesman in Rocky. He's not afraid to disagree with the powers and not afraid to go along with them when it is the reasonable, least-worst choice. Rocky has been very, very good to SLC (lightrail to the U for one, emphasis on sustainable, balanced policies to protect our environment for another) even though he doesn't fit the norm, thank God. btw, I sometimes like the idea of a Dave Buhler mayorship because he could, because of his Republican affiliation, inject some vision into the Legislature to help make SLC an even greater city. It will take vision. He and the Legislature will have to suppress their petty, intolerant attacks against all things diff-ernt, i.e. tolerate diversity and new ideas, as did Brigham Young, our "organizational genius" and founder.Did you know they consumed a lot of beer back then? Read the D&C's plain text on the subject, Anonymous, and be enlightened! Have you seen the brewpubs? Drinkers and non-drinkers alike know them to be some of the more reliable places to find a good meal in SLC. Dave, btw, voted for zoning reform for brewpubs. If he quit the needless, anti-Rocky sniping, he might win more votes, including mine.

That's crazy! Who's been the disaster?
Lawrence of Salt Lake City | 10:36 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
Whoops, my 9:26 pm comment was submitted anonymously, accidentally. I claim it.
Another thing, Anonymous who said I need to get out of SLC (I hope I'm not tapping my shoe too close to yours) I have, indeed, seen other cities. Look at downtown Provo. It's an embarrassment of blight. No profit-making retail there because of the blight of intolerant liquor and zoning laws makes even non-liquor retail suffer. No synergy, no energy because diversity and tolerance are dead. Most of the teenage drinkers get their hooch from gas stations and supermarkets down the street, not from any non-existent clubs and restaurants that need alcohol sales to meet the demands of many visitors to the state. Another example is Rudy Giuliani's NYC. Rudy, the gay and abortion rights supporting Republican candidate for President (leading in virtually all national polls of Republicans) who revived the most diverse city in America. Anonymous, what Utah cities (or elsewhere) have better records than SLC's? Or are you simply trashing everything Rocky? That seems to be the goal of most of these comments. Too bad. I like the Deseret News for being better than the Tribune even if it, too, is a shill for the powers that be. Let's raise the level of discussion. Could Dave Buhler be tolerant and visionary, effective and fair? That's the question few of these comments address. Is there anyone out there with a reality-based view on Dave's vision for SLC? Does he support the clean air? Is he willing to stand up to the "powers that be" and promote SLC's best interests? Few have opinions on this. I hope he will if elected. Truly, as Repbublicans go, he is more reasonable than most. Just quit the anti-Rocky sniping. It only loses him votes.
Democrat Transplant | 11:23 p.m. Aug. 30, 2007
I'm a non-LDS, Democrat who moved to Utah 6 years ago.

Of course I voted for Rocky Anderson because we are of the same political party and being a minority in Utah his message resonated with me.

However, after years of watching how this man operates I would never vote for him again. It's obvious that he has an axe to grind the the LDS church. I now see his criticisms are petty and divisive.

Salt Lake has a beautiful, thriving and diverse downtown. I believe that LDS church sites are a major (if not the biggest) tourism draw for our city. Imagine a mayor from any other major city who would constantly belittle and run down his city's biggest tourist draw. It wouldn't happen anywhere else but I suppose it's okay here because many people feel the Mormon church is too powerful.

A political leader should be a force for unifying not dividing. I think Rocky has been a terrible mayor. I think Salt Lake has thrived in spite of him.

In my opinion the Mormon people are not so different from people of other religions. Some are good, some are not; some are kind, others not; some are decent others not.

I know little of the Mormon leadership but having lived here for 6 years I do not believe that they have any control over me or other non LDS citizens... nor do I believe they desire to control us.

I have not yet decided who to vote for. I only hope that all of the candiates have learned how not to conduct themselves by watching how the current mayor does conduct himself.
Kindness Please! | 12:57 a.m. Aug. 31, 2007
We won't have to put up with Rocky for much longer, so let's show a little kindness toward him and each other. Nothing makes us lose our tongue more than controversy such as this. Humility & kindness goes a long way.
Buhler Supporter | 3:12 a.m. Aug. 31, 2007
I was very impressed by the way Buhler responded to Rocky's attacks. Of course this is a change election, and he has to tell the people how his proposed policies would be different from the current administration, so while he may see things that Rocky failed to accomplish, he has not made the kind of personal attacks that Rocky does.

Rocky is a joke. Yes some things he has done were good, even Buhler admits this, his style of presenation make no one want to cooperate with him. We need someone who will build the bridges of this divided community.

calm down all | 10:20 a.m. Aug. 31, 2007
Terry- I sincerely thank you for being the first person to give a logical, not-heated, non-religion based comment. You actually sound like you're online to comment on politics. As a Mormon- I'm offended by those who feel the need to bash (by whatever name them prefer to be called), and disappointed in the Mormons who are acting so un-Christ-like in their responses. That is totally ineffective for both sides. I don't like Rocky either, but not because he hates my church. I don't like him because I think he was an ineffective politician and a terrible mayor. Thank you for bringing civility back to this blog.

To Democrat Transplant- thank you for your diplomatic approach from both sides of the debate. You seem like a very level headed person- Its too bad you're not running- your point of view would be a unifying force in our city!
James | 11:08 a.m. Aug. 31, 2007
Terry and calm down all,

I personally have a very strong testimony of the inspiration that it took for Joseph Smith to bring about the Book of Mormon and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I am also dismayed by the likes of the two of you that think and voice that anything that is published or said that can possible be construed to show the church in a bad light is an attempt to bash it. Your narrow concept of the church as though you have been chosen and / appointed to protect it, is more harmful to the spreading of love, respect, and charity that the church stands for than all the anti-Mormons combined. I personally believe the church nor Salt Lake City, has no need of your type of protection.

As all good works, in order, to advance it is always predicated on an accurate evaluation of the facts of events as they are, and then make effective changes to ones actions as new events arrive.

I believe Rocky has done more in protecting the sanctity of the Mormon Church and Salt Lake City than the hordes of people like the two of you combined.
calm down all | 1:47 p.m. Aug. 31, 2007
James- why are you so bitter? Every entry you've made has been critical and fueled by whatever anger is eating at you- testimony doesn't do that. Re-read my entry. Nowhere does it say that I think everyone who has an opinion that puts the church in a bad light is bashing. It's those who feel the need to categorize all church members the same way that are bashing. Bashing is a form of bigotry. It is no more true to say that all Mormons are sheep that act without thinking than it is to say that all Hispanics are illegals. Its stupid, naive, and completely incorrect. You may have a testimony of some aspects of the doctrines of the LDS church, but you proved in your very first comment, that you didn't have a very good understanding of its practices.

For the record, I've lived all over the world with members and non-members alike. I don't have a narrow view of the church. I enjoy learning about other faiths and how they relate or differ from my own. Notice that in my comment, I was as disappointed in the poor behavior of the bloggers who are Mormon as those who aren't. Not all the comments on here were bashing, but some were.

You should think about why you over-reacted to the compliments I was giving to two well thought out comments. By the way, I don't know Terry, but nowhere in Terry's entry does it mention religion at all.

I don't care if you like Rocky- that is your right. It is also my right not to like him. I don't care about what he thinks about the Church. I do care about how his behavior reflects on our great city.
calm down all | 1:52 p.m. Aug. 31, 2007
PS- If you truly do have a testimony of the teachings of the church, and that my "narrow" concepts are disruptive to the spreading of respect, love and charity, then why don't you behave that way?

My first blog complimented two others on their civil and diplomatic entries. How is that not respectful? Re-read your entries: they are nearly all heated, accusatory, and attacks.

You can believe whatever you want about Rocky, that's the blessing of a free nation. But so can I. I suggest you learn to express your opinion without ripping on others. You would be far more effective.
office girl | 2:42 p.m. Aug. 31, 2007
Sorry James, I have to agree with the more than half a dozen people who have specifically disagreed with you. Particularly "Rocky...." and "Democrat Transplant" who both did vote for Rocky and now think he's not been good for the city. I should also point out that "Calm down" had a point- gross generalizations have been made on both sides (see "some guy" for the generalization from the right and all those calling Mormons "sheep" for the other extreme).

I saw this quote on Dear Abby online today before I started reading this mess of blogs. I think its relevant:

WORTH REMEMBERING: "No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior. All collective judgments are wrong. Only racists make them." -- Elie Wiesel, Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor (1928--)

just a thought...

By the way, the comments I agree with the most are from "Everybody" who said to leave religion out of politics, and "Brian" who said, GO VOTE!

I've been wondering for a day now what it would feel like and what I would thing to have the front page of the newspaper say that the mayor of my hometown is calling me a liar. I think that is way beyond political discussion or differences of opinion. It is unconscionable.

I have not seen or heard what the Keith Christensen supporters think about this. My impression has always been that Keith is Rocky II - the hand-picked successor. If we elect Keith, do we get more of the same, or will he take the opportunity now to distance himself from Rocky?

Besides Keith, where are the other candidates and their supporters on this issue? Silently happy to see Buhler knocked down a peg? Afraid to speak lest they be next? This played as a major story - front page - on the radio - letter to the chamber of commerce - and no one other than Buhler supporters and Rocky supporters are weighing in? Who has courage and integrity? That person should be elected.
