My 3 year old son is one of the uninsured Utah chilren. I am a self-employed Optometrist, and because of a surgically fixed birth defect that my son had when he was a week old no insurance company will insure him. I cannot get him on CHIP because I make more than they allow, and I have even asked several insurance companies to just charge me more for his premium but they all say they won't cover him. He is completly healthy, the surgery fixed the problem but because he had it they say they won't cover him. What am I suppose to do? You have to be perfectly healthy to get on individual insurance policies, but self-employed business owners have no other choice. So I just pray that nothing major happens to my son, and we just pay cash for any doctors visits he has.

Jed - look into the state's high-risk insurance pool. It is fairly expensive, but fortunately for you, it appears that money may not be an obstacle. Can you imagine being in the same predicament with a modest income? You also may be interested in contacting the Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) and inquiring about the proposed insurance exchange.

Look into the number of illegals and anchor babies and you will probably find a reason for a good majority of the increase in uninsured children.

Oh, I forgot, we can't ask such silly questions now can we?

We should be asking ourselves why health insurance is unaffordable rather than asking what the government can do about it.

Government regulations and policies have fueled the inflation of health care costs. Ask the gov't to stop meddling in health care instead of asking for more meddling.

There certainly are the illegals. These kids already cost Utah tax payers more than $60 million just to educate them. Now health insurance?

And by government involvement in covering these kids, we are creating an entirely new generation of entitlement demanding adults. Eventually, their kids and their kids. The saturation becomes pure socialism.

That's no kidding! The actions taken to cover every child will have the unintended consequence of creating an entire generation of people who will know only socialized health care. A very slippery slope indeed.

How about health vouchers instead, but only for citizens and aliens here legally? Perhaps we could use the $60 million for the vouchers? After all, we are only taking from illegals to give to legals, right?
