The news story makes this sound like it is all something new to BYU and all done in the past year. When I was teaching at BYU ten years ago my department and college were tracking outcomes and trying to decide what was the best way to measure outcomes. In fact I think that this has always been a feature of all true universities. I'm concerned that the current fad-like focus will result in the tail wagging the dog. The real key is getting the students to focus on the learning and not the grade. If this gets everyone more focused on some grades then it will be a step backwards.
