A well-expressed summary and commentary. Thanks for publishing it.

Question: does an opinion column like this really qualify as front page news?

I'm not defending AG AG; I'm just saying.
Kay Barton | 6:51 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
This is a very one sided and slanted commentary. Other than his poor handling of the fired judges (which he had every right to do),he has been in a no win situation. He is another victim of Bush hating politics that seem so rampant today.

Didn't see the "New Analysis" banner anywhere on this "story." Regardless of prevailing opinion on Gonzales, this wasn't straight reporting.
Guaglione | 7:36 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Was this a news story or a political hit piece? It didn't say in the title.

And didn't Abu Ghraib occur before Gonzales took over?

"He was not up to the job."

The sad thing for our country is that the exact same thing could be said about President Bush. He is a good man, but is simply incapable of managing our country. The really sad thing is now because of him, the pendulum will now swing way too far to the left because of the backlash against him.
Greg Rampton | 7:57 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
This is news? I thought the front page was reserved for balanced reporting but this is clearly the reporter's opinion fleshed out with some corroborating statements by like-minded politicians. Even the headline writer got in his licks, "Tenure Unmitigated Failure". I searched the article in vain to see who made the statement and it was ... your headline guy. If the reporter has an opinion this biased, then his 'news' article is no more than a blog. You can do better.

I agree with the other comments. The Deseret News has gone downhill in persuit of the all mighty 50 cents per copy. They have hired a bunch of reporters only for their offbeat thoughts and they mostly run AP hate editorials as news items.

The U. S. Citizens are safer now and their freedoom has been returned. Now if Bush would step down it would be a good direction.
I'm switching from GOP to an Indendent voter.

The entire Bush administration is an unmitigated failure......as is Bush himself. The worst president in the history of the United States, without a doubt. Those that supported him in his quest for a holy war in Iraq, and especially those that still support him, have blood on their hands.
Dan Lindsey | 8:32 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
I am a BYU Law School Graduate and unfortunately, Alberto Gonzales was a disgrace to the Justice Department. I am ashamed of him. He was the first hispanic to hold the job and did a shameful job. Really now, to say the constitution doesn't grant every citizen habeas corpus? Shameful. America is safer that he is gone. Without habeas corpus granted in the constitution Joesph Smith would never have gotten out of jail 20+ times to complete his mission here on earth. His attorneys filed what are called "writs of Habeas Corpus" to obtain his release." Even way back then, our country honored the writs and released a person from jail if there were no, or insufficient evidence to hold them. When Mr. Gonzales stated to congress that the Constitution does not grant Habeas Corpus, I was shocked and saddened. I am glad he is gone.

With these kind of opinion pieces being found in places of front and center news, maybe the Deseret Morning News is not worth reading anymore.
Mark B | 9:47 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
I'm with Lindsey, and have no trouble feeling good about AG's departure. But, hey, there seems to be plenty of the opposite feeling here, too. What should we put down as Gonzales' greatest accomplishment as top crime fighter/defender of personal liberty? What was his greatest day? Anybody?...Anybody?
Ken Wright | 9:50 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
More of the same from this newspaper. Opinion and conjecture presented as news. I have been dissapointed with this tact for more than a year now. I think it's time to finally admit it won't get any better. I'll be canceling my subscription today. Goodbye for the last time..

I find myself lost in the soup of Washington politics. Hatch attributes the resignation to "the absurd political theater of Washington politics." Accusations are regularly created on both sides that seem fundamentally false, but are stated so many times people start to believe themselves. I'm disappointed by the article. Can the same author write as persuasively the opposing point of view?
Steve Burdette | 10:09 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
If cronyism is a crime, then the U.S. Attorney for Utah is guilty as is his buddies who put him there. Orrin Hatch is the king of promoting his buddies into important positions. Just look at Judge Dee Benson (Hatch's former chief of staff), Magistrate Judge Paul Warner (buddy of Benson),and now Brett Tolman (former law clerk to Benson). It is not important who the best person is for the job. Just who they know. Yeah sure, cronyism is alive and well here in Utah. Maybe this should be looked into?
Bill H | 10:35 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Gonzales is just another victim of the Democrat and leftest media smear tactics. He joins the ranks of Gingrich, Lott, Rowe, Ashcroft, and Cheney. They can't get to the President, so they have to demonize his principal staff or any Republican that seems to be effective.
Jason Postma | 10:36 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
As others have noted, what is this opinion piece doing on the front page of the newspaper?
Billy | 11:03 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
If our government officials do a horrible job and are corrupt, and the media reports it, is that "hating" or "bashing", or just reporting the facts? The Bush administration does what is best for the Republican Gang and their rich friends in opposition to what is best for the country. If they don't want that reported on, they should not conduct the countrys business in this fashion. Don't bash the independent media for reporting it. Thankfully, most media is not Faux News.
george | 11:23 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Gonzales is what he is..... typical of Bush.
This is a very factual story- he is not a victim but part of a sad administration.
Joe | 11:40 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Jason,
I agree for 50 cents the News will print anything to lure Tribune readers. How many of us would sell out or do something for so little?
Robert Andreason | 11:58 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
I agree that this is not a news story but an exremely biased editorial. The AP should be ashamed of this kind of reporting but it becomes more blatant every day.
Anonymous | 11:59 a.m. Aug. 28, 2007
To Bill H ("Gonzales is just another victim of the Democrat and leftest media smear tactics. He joins the ranks of Gingrich, Lott, Rowe, Ashcroft, and Cheney. They can't get to the President, so they have to demonize his principal staff or any Republican that seems to be effective.")

What planet do you live on!

For those who claim this is a slanted article, where are the the 99% of the time the Deseret News reports from a very conservative bias? You never cry foul then, how come?? Could it be you like it whent he left is trashed but can't take it when the right gets it's turn?
br | 12:55 p.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Now I know who I stopped subscribing to
the news nearly a year ago, and depend
on Fox news to keep me informed
Bookaholic | 1:40 p.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Hit pieces of this sort belong on Salon.com, not on the front page of the Deseret News. This is a liberal spouting off. It's purely opinion, not news.

Gonzales has a great mind, is an accomplished attorney, and a good man. This Harvard Law School graduate could wipe the floor with this dunce of a journalist.

Because the leftists can't get to Bush, they try to destroy those close to him--and they largely succeed because conservatives are too "proper" and decent to fight back.

If we're not careful, these venomous, hate-filled anti-American liberals will take over, and destroy our country and us with them.
br or bs? | 1:41 p.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Now I know what I feel the way I do when it comes to those who insist that Faux News is a legitimate news source.
OSSA | 1:47 p.m. Aug. 28, 2007
How anyone out there can defend Gonzales' record is hard to understand, unless the defender depends on American worst news station; Fox News, for his information.
NorthboundZax | 2:16 p.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Guaglione: didn't Abu Ghraib occur before Gonzales took over?

You are right that he wasn't A.G. then, but Gonzales was the White House counsel whose arguments held sway making it easier for abuses like Abu Ghraib to occur. The point is that we had someone who was so connected to major abuses of human rights in the top law enforcement position where those abuses could be further magnified (and were, with warrantless wiretapping, data mining, etc). It is small wonder that the most sweeping policy change after Abu Ghraib was the banning of digital cameras at detention facilities.

I am not sorry to see Gonzales go, but he was really just more of an enabler than a centerpiece of the erosion of the administration's credibility.

Bookaholic must have had his nose in "War and Peace" for a VERY long time, because Bush gets caught in lies and flip flops all the time that he never gets questioned on. He speaks only to military audiences and has a press conference about 3 times a year, usually to announce how well our occupation is going. As for Gonzales having a great mind, too bad he came down with a little case of Alzheimer's when it came to telling the truth to Congress. May we never again live in a country where the top law guy is the one whose job was to make torture legal and mainstream.

I have had it! I am cancelling my subscription for the third time in the last ten years(three equal to the number of LIBERAL Deseret News articles written in the last ten years).I will renew my subscription to the Provo Daily Herald.
Red-stater | 3:31 p.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Why does truth frighten Conservatives? When did torture become part of the GOP platform?
Basin&Range | 3:56 p.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Opinions on the front page? I think this is an example of the most efficient way news is delivered these days--the internet. Perhaps the D-news will offer a less/more/different bias on this subject with their next posting. Point your browser this way in a couple of hours and see what appears on the front "page."
Moving Target | 4:41 p.m. Aug. 28, 2007
Am I wrong, or did the Deseret News recently remove this article from the "Top Stories" portion of its site? You have to dig for it now. Looks like the Deseret News didn't want to offend the two posters who threatened to cancel their subscription . . . .
