Proponents of the current law say that dividing a school district is the same as creating a new city, and they conclude that such a proposal only affects those residents of the �new� school district.

Obviously, this is not true. The creation of a new city forms a new �layer� of government; it does not �divide� the county. When a new city is formed, the citizens of either the new municipality or those of the remaining county area do not terminate the terms of the elected county council members. However, the current law to create a new school disbands the entire board of education whose members were elected by school district patrons of both the new and remaining district. Also, a county does not cease collecting tax from the property owners of a new city. In a school district division, conversely, the �remaining district� is unable to collect taxes needed for new buildings from the residents of the �new district.�

Under the current law, then, the registered voters of the �remaining district� are disenfranchised of their constitutionally protected vote and scope of governance.

Our legislature makes laws that prove to be a means to an end, no matter what is fair or right. We may never win the right to vote with a lawsuit, but it's worth a try. Maybe we should exercise the right to vote we do have to put the offending legislators out of office.

These attempts to split school district are veiled social and economic RACISM by snooty east-siders who are lily white and don't want their kids mixing with Pacific Islanders and Mexican kids.

Regarding the comments made by Richard G. I'm here to tell you he's wrong wrong wrong! His remarks were ignorant and RACIST. If somebody had their hand in your pocket how would you feel?

I read a good history book that is very popular in Utah that spends a fair amount of time discussing socio-economic issues. They had a profound impact on society as a whole. I think efforts made to execute this district-split would lead to an increased polarization of the upper and lower class. From what I remember the effects of such polarization and inequality weren't very good for the civilizations of the before mentioned book.

But what would I know. I am a lowly product of the west-side Granite School District. I am lucky I can read and write.

Please note that when Wasatch Junior High burned Granite needed to close a school. We had the perfect opportunity to do so an take care of a pressing need. The Granite school board did not have the guts to stand up to those with the money on the East side. Rebuilding that school in essence stole from the rest of the district because the money would have been allocated better elsewhere. Every voter of the West side of Jordan and Granite needs to take note and let your voice be heard when these issues show up on the ballot. If we do not, we will find a lot of little school districts without the resources to sustain more than the most basic programs.

I also would commend the county government, Mayor and Council, for taking the stands that a majority of people agree with although they are not the ones holding the purse strings. This is one branch of government that in the last couple of years have been a shining example of how to govern. As a stanch Republican. I want to say I have been very pleased with their actions. Their regard and clear decision making is one of the things I look for in those that govern. I sure would like to see someone like Mayor Corroon run for an office like governor if that is his desire. I for on would support him because he does not always do what seems to be popular, but he tries to do what he feels is best.
