Everyone still has access. You just can't bring your noisy, smelly ATVs. Leave people who like nature the way God created it (without noisy machines) some room to enjoy it. ATVs have plenty of space to roam. They don't need to invade everywhere.

If he was upset by the articles in the DMN, why did he cancel his subscription to the Tribune? Am I missing something?

"progrom"?

Either this candidate for mayor can't spell correctly, or the editor made a typo. Hmm.

First, as you fully acknowledge in your opinion piece, these articles describe actions taken by the National Forest Service, not the Sierra Club. Despite your opinion, these organizations are quite different and rarely in support of one another. Unfortunately, the data regarding damage caused by irresponsible ATV use all across our public lands is so over whelming that only selfish people like yourself refuse to acknowledge the problem and the blame.

Second, nice tactic on using the word pogrom. There's nothing over reaching about comparing the conservation movement to the Holocaust.

I really hope that you enjoy voting for yourself because from the sounds of it, you might be the only one.

C'mon, Rainer. You've been the mouthpiece for unrestricted access for ATVs in wilderness areas forever. A casual look at the land your crowd likes to visit reveals the significant damage those machines are doing. You're creating wastelands.

Many is the time I've been hiking on a quiet trail when in the distance I'd hear the racket of approaching ATVs. It gets louder and louder, and then ROAR, three or four apes with coolers bungie-corded to the backs of their four-wheelers blow past me. After the gawdawful noise subsides there still remains torn-up trail, chewed-up vegetation, and the stench of small-engine exhaust. I'm left wondering why in blazes I bother to attempt hiking in Utah. I'm a peaceful person, but I swear at times like that I'm tempted to start throwing rocks.

It's called a dictionary. Try using one sometime. Although I don't agree with the authors application of the term (see my comments above), it is an actual word.

One more comment. I, and many of my ATV friends, never leave established ATV trails to 'tear up' the hillside. There are always idiots who have no consideration for others who give everyone else a bad name.

I have a suggestion for the rock thrower. If you don't like ATVs passing you on your hike, don't hike on an ATV trail! Hike on a hiking trail. There are 10 times as many hiking trails as there are ATV trails.

I see tons of hiker damage where the hikers cut corners and cause excess erosion. I don't put all hikers in the category of being careless idiots who tear up the mountain.

Hey, I thought anti-ATV folks were supposed to be all about Love, Tolerance, Open-mindedness, Diversity, Freedom of expression and such. I'm not feeling the love and tolerance of others in this thread.

What, it's OK to decide to throw rocks at ATV riders and call them apes just because they chose to ride instead of walk? I don't often see ATV riders stop to throw rocks at the hikers and call them names! I guess ATV riders are the tolerant ones.

I thought the obscure Nazi reference was funny (for those who got it). I can just visualize these trail Nazis with arm extended, shouting, "Vee shall use zee trails zee vay God intended"! Hail Al Gore!

I do not understand Mr. Huck's reasoning. If we are to have a civil society the interests of all community stakeholders need to be balanced and we cannot do this by insulting those who disagree with us and refusing to listen to them. Choosing not to read a newspaper because you don't agree with what is published shows an unwillingness to listen to differing viewpoints and it's not becoming of someone who wants to represent a community to ignore those who disagree with them. A Mayor is elected to represent the community and not just those who agree with them. As a candidate for the Orem City Council I would never refer to any organization or person in such a manner regardless of how much I disagree with them on a given issue. I would also strongly urge Mr. Huck to tone down his rhetoric and address his points of disagreement with other members of his community in a more civil manner. I too have been less than civil at times yet we shouldn't get to the point where civility is only extended to those we agree with or to those who we disagree with on minor points.

Ah, c'mon DMN. That was funny! I mispelled 'dummer' on purpose! Oh, the irony. He mispelled the word that he thought Rainer mispelled, and accused Rainer of mispelling it. Then I asked 'who is dummer'?? Dang, sometimes y'all take the fun out of this! LOL
Dummer | 3:24 p.m. Aug. 16, 2007
Misspelled has two "s's". Or is that just another hillarious joke?

Rainier never met a noisy engine he didn't love. It's a mental disorder known as motorphilia. Maybe if we cut off his gasoline supply, he'll get better.

The massive soil loss caused by the indiscriminate abuse by ATVers is a very real concern. When I see the tracks of these machines, I routinely see crushed and destroyed vegetation, and compacted, exposed soil. Whenever the soil washes away, 2 very different but vastly critical ecosystems are being degraded; the soil is impoverished, and our aquatic ecosystems are choked.
Some day (may it be soon), people are going to look back and say, "You squandered some of your precious fossil fuels doing WHAT? Destroying your land and water?????????"
As a disclaimer, I should mention that the problem would diminish greatly if ATVers policed their ranks. Unfortunately, it seems to be a sad case of an unscrupulous majority making a decent minority look bad.
