Finally! Does this really matter to me? Not really.
But let's see. I'll bet the old Trib owners spent about $30Million. And I'll bet the new Trib owners spent another grundle. And then I'll bet the DesNews contributed another bunch of millions to fun attorney yachts/boats/vacations/etc.
And now, after everyone has been calling each other names for years, they make nice? And the old owners get paid. So the old owners made their tax-free money from the first sale. They went to court, yelled, screamed and finally got more money from the new owners and the DesNews. So the old owners can write off the expense of the lawsuit as "business expense" and pocket the "settlement" as well. Gee. I wish I had lots of money so I could go sue someone and they could give me a lot of "confidential" money.
Who loses? I'll bet both papers had to cut expenses to pay legal costs -- so my guess is the reader lost because the Trib/News couldn't hire people.
I am normally the Sports Page first guy in my reading of the newspaper. I recently switched from the Trib to the Des News for such reading. The quality of the Tribunes work has been sliding for years now and hopefully with the settlement, Deseret News publishing can revamp the quality of both our local newspapers.
