Mr. Gale, my main complaint with your editorials is that you use absolutes.
Examples:
1) "Daylight-saving time has never saved a dime ... for
anyone ... anyplace" 2) "almost everyone agrees that we launched our attack
with too few troops." 3) "Proponents say vouchers will generate more money
for public education. Anyone who believes that is not only selfish but
naive."
These are only a few phrases of many, but I feel that these
will suffice to make my point. I will now critique them:
1) Daylight
saving time has never saved a dime for 'anyone.' You can't vouch for 6 billion
people in the world to say that not one single person has benefited from
daylight savings.
2) "Almost everyone" does not convince me. I've
never heard that opinion expressed, so I don't find it likely that "almost
everyone" agrees with that statement. I find it more likely that "you" do.
3) "Anyone" who believes this is selfish and nave. Really? Just because
someone has a different opinion than you, does not make them "selfish and
naive."
Next time you write an article, please make sure to add a few
statistics and avoid absolutes. It's just basic "good writing."
