I would have thought it to be a more balanced article if it had included the opinions of a 4th generation LDS by the name of Kent Ponder, PHd.

The high level of education in Utah is a myth. In fact, Utah doesn't even place in the top 50%! I provided a link to prove the point, but the comment engine will not accept it. I encourage the reader to simply do a search using the terms "education level by state" and you will find the census statistics. You will find the 2012 census data shows Utah at #30.
