My goodness! It is just a quaint tradition.

I believe it shows respect to the future father-in- law(AND mother-in-law!)

I think some people have a chip on their shoulder already.

I agree! My daughter lives out of state and has been dating a wonderful man - Last week my husband received a phone call from this young man asking permission to marry our daughter. After a brief fatherly chat-he gave his permission. We are delighted and it shows great respect this young man has for us and for our daughter.
Old traditions are still around and appreciated.
