To "Gordon | 10:20 a.m." the UAW has a higher labor cost per hour than the non-UAW plants. There are studies out that show that both make about the same amount of money per hour. The problem lies with the union and union rules.

Within the UAW, if a worker's job it to put the knobs on a dash board, that is all that worker can do, even if it takes him 4 hours to do what the UAW quota says he can do in 8 hours. In a non-union job a worker could put knobs on cars for 4 hours, then head over to lug-nuts on tires. The non-union worker could do more in an 8 hour shift than a single union worker. This alone saves on the cost of a car. Then, you add in the union mandated benefits that are better than what the engineers receive, and in the end, unions add about $2000 to the price of a new car. So, for UAW manufacturers to compete with non union companies they have to cut corners and lower quality.

Sorry, but don't have anything in rebuttal - folks like you are hopeless. "...shown the door....", let's just wait til the next presidential election or better yet, let the President serve this great country under very trying circumstances. Have we forgotten the Who's Who that put us in this inherited mess?

you may want to go back and read the letter the letter writer is the one that used the word hate to begin with in reference to Obama. You can't through stink bombs then get made if you come out smelling bad.
you may also want to read hear hear's post.

Blind to their own myriad inadequacies. Blind to the current ruination caused by their puppet Bush. I would like to see them offer up a candidate that we could be proud of, but every one they can find is a bigger joke than the last. See "Replacements" comment above.
The GOP as we know it is dead...stinking. It is an empty, mindless, lost shell of it's former self.
The few remaining stragglers can offer up nothing and no one of substance, so they throw darts at the current administration.
Weak, embarassing, and completely predictable.
RIP GOP. You are gone. Valueless, insignificant, passe, trite, rotting, without merit.
You had your chances for 8 years, and all we did was slide further into the abyss. Thanks a lot GOP.
We have seen your work, and it benefits few, and hurts many. You lost. Now go sit in the corner and be quiet.
Good riddance. Now leave us alone as we clean up your mess.

Dear RedShirt:

I think you should volunteer for South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford's re-election campaign.

Your hypocrisy is perfectly suited for it.
nothing | 11:21 a.m. June 26, 2009
wrong with being angry at the America hating left.
If I hear "at least give this administration a chance" again, I am going to blow chunks!
He has been given a chance to show just how Marxist he is. Who would have guessed with his associations and upbringing? He has spent our childrens future and thats just OK with the ME crowd. Well the "chickens are comming home to roost" as one of Obamas spiritual advisers once said.
I say Prepare for that which is about to come to the formerly most free country in the world.
KM | 11:22 a.m. June 26, 2009
Why not show him the door by taking his teleprompter away, so whoever is behind his words will just go away... ditto with his blackberry.
RedShirt | 11:33 a.m. June 26, 2009
TO "Anonymous | 10:57 a.m." how about this. Obama is following Hoover and FDR for this recession. Those two presidents did nothing to help the depression, and actually made things worse.

Hoover started massive infastructure projects, which had no effect on the economy.

Next, we had FDR and his protectionist tarrifs, wage controls, price controls through the blue eagle, the "Alphabet soup" government offices, and a host of other things intended to make things better, which actually did nothing to help. Obama is doing nearly the same things.

Obama put into the stimulus act the "Buy American" provisions, which are causing other nations to not-buy american at the same time. Obama is enacting wage controls on any company that receives stimulus money. He is adding or expanding existing government programs faster than FDR built his "Alphabet soup" empire.

The problem lies in the fact that Europe didn't do what Hoover and FDR did, and, for the most part was done with the depression by 1933. The US lingered in the depression until around 1939 or 1940. What I don't want to see is a repeat of the depression where massive ineffective government programs were experimented with.

Anonymous of 11:09: Did you not read RedShirt say he is more inclined to vote Libertarian? How do you get off saying he's hypocritical? He pointed out the problematic Democrats. He didn't say there weren't any problematic Republicans. By indicating his willingness to vote Libertarian, he isn't siding with the Republicans. He's pointing out that both parties have their problems.
@Idahoan | 12:00 p.m. June 26, 2009
The leftist posters on here would like to smother Redshirt. He just shines too much light.
Keep OBAMA! | 12:01 p.m. June 26, 2009
Look at all Obama has done or can do: Raised the car industry from the dead, calm the weather with his signature, give back our health with his promises, and turn debt (water) into properity (wine). I was a doubter before, but now I know, HE IS THE MESSIAH!!
Demosthenes | 12:02 p.m. June 26, 2009
As the unemployment rate continues to rise, the stock and real estate markets continue to flounder, with Federal deficits putting the next 2 generations in massive debt, and with inflation looming on the near horizon, the next election cycles will certainly measure the American people's satisfaction with Obama's "hope and change."

To all letter writers: If you want to make a point effectively, stick to facts and logic. Labeling and name-calling won't change anyone's mind--they tell more about the writer than the subject of the letter.
To Km | 12:04 p.m. June 26, 2009
Do you think Bush didn't use a teleprompter. You could see his beady little eyes squint when he was focusing in on a word. He would stutter and stammer and then mispronounce the word that he most likely didn't know the definition of.
JN | 12:05 p.m. June 26, 2009
Hey, Indiana, you sound pretty angry and hateful yourself.

Take the emotion out of it and listen to the argument, provide a reasonable justification for what you believe, THEN we'll have something to discuss. Throwing words around it easy, thinking and reasoning is hard
DBG | 12:13 p.m. June 26, 2009
@RedShirt:Certainly the "seeds" were planted after the turn of the 20th Century. However, I was merely pointing out that Congress authorized this "sieze" under TARP, which was under Bush's watch. This could have been avoided and let these businesses fail if these bailouts never occured. At least Obama is standing up for the taxpayer's money. And placing accountability squarely on the shoulders of the CEOs.

Hatuletoh | 12:49 p.m. June 26, 2009
It's Utahan pontificate on presidential politics. It was funny when Rocky Anderson protested against George Bush, and it's funny to hear the cries of "socialism!" from the other side. Owing to our small population and intransigent insistance on voting 'R' in all national elections, US presidents only come here when they're Republican and in need of a friendly crowd to pat on them on the back. Even then, they don't actually care about our opinions. And why should they?

Put briefly, Mr. Anderson's opinion doesn't matter and neither does mine.
Amen Anonymous 10:54 | 1:12 p.m. June 26, 2009
You made some excellent points.

I was a registered independent for over 30 yrs, voting on both sides of the political spectrum. I became a Democrat in 2006. It is sad to see what has become of the Republican Party. When Republican leaders are apologizing to Limbaugh it is clear Republicans have lost their way. How ironic that so many Mormons are Republicans when the Republican presidential candidate was a divorcee and they rallied around the VP candidate whose unmarried, teenage daughter was pregnant, while assailing the family man, Barack Obama.
What responsibility do Republicans take for the past 8 years?

Palin/Limbaugh ticket | 1:34 p.m. June 26, 2009
With people like Redshirt speaking for the conservative movement, that movement is clearly doomed.
Keep up the good work Rush, er, I mean, Red.

LOL!
RedShirt | 2:15 p.m. June 26, 2009
To "Palin/Limbaugh ticket | 1:34 p.m." actually it was Republican trying to be better "Progressives" than the Democrats that killed their party. If you reviewed the last presidential race, McCain did better against Obama once he added Palin to the ticket. That brought back many conservatives to consider voting for him.

If you paid attention to the campain, rather than just sitting back and enjoying that tingly feeling that runs up your leg when Obama speaks, you would have seen the reports.

Grover | 2:56 p.m. June 26, 2009
I get it now..."show him the door"! Right, like in he doesn't belong in the oval office, he should be holding the door for the real POTUS. Ok, with that corrected focus ask yourself what would have made people overwhelmingly both in electoral and popular vote make your doorman candidate the new President?Only the complete and total failure of his predecessor and the "loyalty above all" defense of his record by his party. Get used to it.
To redbaugh | 2:56 p.m. June 26, 2009
If you had payed any attention to the final results you would know that the uptick when Palin was named was very short lived. As soon as most sane republicans found out more about her they dropped like rocks is the polls. Nice try though, you can now return to the hannity hour.
MrH | 3:08 p.m. June 26, 2009
Oh the sour grapes and pity parties of writers like this...too funny. Anyone who does not share his narrow view must be shown the door... too sad. Time to grow up dear sir.
To Bucky Jay | 3:14 p.m. June 26, 2009
Obama good, Bush bad... Corporations greedy, government good... America broken, the rest of the world good... Conservatives bad, liberals good...

A pathetic and predictable discourse, as usual.
to: Red Shirt | 3:24 p.m. June 26, 2009
While the addition of Palin to the Republican ticket excited many Conservatives, it resulted in the defection of many moderates. Hard to see how the Republicans can become a national party when their base support is so narrow.
Anonymous | 3:26 p.m. June 26, 2009
By the pathetic postings of neocons like RedShirt above, it must be agonizing for the modern American conservative movement to have nothing to look forward to in 2012 other than a Palin/Limbaugh ticket.
This might explain their non-stop weird nature.
re: Redshirt | 3:31 p.m. June 26, 2009

I am sure he would be happy to do so but he is to busy trolling the internet and posting nonsense. If he is going to be busy with Sanford's campaign then we will not have the blessing of reading his long winded and moronic posts since he won't have time to make any.

Please don't leave us RedShirt. We are enlightened by your posts and would sorely miss your wisdom, knowledge and humor. We love to read your posts and hear your justify your evil votes for evil people who agree with your evil opinions.

I am sure our founding fathers loved to read the op-eds of British voters who supported their right to vote to harm Americans. I am sure that they truly enjoyed reading the rationale for why Britain had the right to start wars of aggression that caused innocent Americans to die.

The modern day neocons and conservatives in Iran and the U.S. would be at home in pre-Revolutionary Britain

To "Anonymous | 3:26 p.m." and "re: Redshirt | 3:31 p.m." is that all you have?! I bring out quotes, points of history and other such verifiable things, and this is all you have to come back with?!

Redshirt making demands as if he sits in judgement of it all.
This is typical of neocons and why they are doomed to self-righteous failure. (except in Utah)
LOL!
Redshirt not evil | 4:20 p.m. June 26, 2009
I don't see Redshirt as "evil" (that's a conservative ploy) just a willingly brainwashed, sad and lonely human being who cannot accept reality (overwhelming support for the new administration).
Yes, Virginia, there are still some (neocons)around.

Hypocrisy | 4:28 p.m. June 26, 2009
Fredrick and other fellow Conservatives.

who's your alternative? So you want to already boot Obama after only 6 months calling him a failure and STILL reserving judgment on Bush even after 8 years of disaster. So who's the alternative? Who should we put in place after Obama is shown the door?

George Bush? Dick Cheney? Sarah Palin? Mitt Romney?

See, it's all about realistic solutions. This is one of the main reasons why the GOP has been losing in states that used to be their strongholds.

Logic simple enough even a liberal SHOULD understand it.
Obama the teacher | 4:58 p.m. June 26, 2009
All the Redshirt bashers out there must be taking their lessons from Obama. Any time a legitimate complaint is made of policies using history, statistics, and logic, the only comeback is a bunch of dismissive "LOL, Rushbaugh, Hannity-lover, Faux News brainwashed, neocon, last 8 years of Bush, etc., etc.," with no logical or reasonable rebuttal to your point. The intent is to cleverly marginalize and diminish your credibility, and create an impression that they are so enlightened that your arguments are not even worthy of a rebuttal other than mockery. Obama is a master at this, hoping that what is lost to his worshipers is the fact that he has offered no reasoned rebuttal.

...And when their policies ultimately fail miserably according to historical precedent, they will still blame you.
Reason | 5:13 p.m. June 26, 2009
Why do I get the impression that many of the barbs against RedShirt were written by the same person? It sounds like our good ol' Anonymous again. Yes, I realize that the name Anonymous is used if you dont enter a name, but this one is different.

The writing of THIS Anonymous is usually easy to recognize, even when he (she?) posts under different names. He posts frequently on these forums, but contributes nothing to the discussion, and offers only taunts and insults. He only makes himself look petty. He reminds me of a little irrelevant dog who yaps constantly and nips at the heels of adults who are attempting to engage in an intelligent debate. I just roll my eyes, smile, and ignore the yapping.

Tracey -

Just what, exactly, is the value of "putting your shoulder to the wheel" of a train that is heading off a cliff?

Obama may mean well but in the real world you can't PERFORM well if you're clueless. Like they say, "knowledge is power" and Obama simply lacks much of the knowledge required to perform adequately for the world's greatest nation.

But one reaps what they sow don't they?

Re Obama the teacher | 7:20 p.m. June 26, 2009
So let's ask Red Shirt what he uses as sources.
What source did he use to suggest that John Kerry got special treatment in being awarded Purple Hearts?
What was his source to suggest that Obama was involved with a lawsuit to force a bank to make BAD loans?
What was his source to show that Al Gore has personally become a billionaire as a result of his support of global warming?
What was his source which said Timothy Geithner wrote tax code?

Say what you will. I'm still relieved that Uncle George has gone back to Texas. And by the way, wasn't it Bush who was in a big hurry to bailout the failed banking system? How selective our memories.
