Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Yours just happens to be paid for. Although
I didn't like the so-called "joke" that Letterman told - which to
me as a woman felt rather derogatory - I didn't appreciate Palin's
"high-fluting" response either. She should not have tried to be so
"eloquent". It got too muddled.
Funny thing about all of this - A-Rod didn't initially say a peep. With his tarnished reputation, what was his take? Not much has been written about his response, but I bet it hasn't felt good either.
If you are in the public eye - you will get publicity, good or bad. It just goes with the territory.

While Rush Limbaugh did not call Chelsea the "White House Dog" in words, he did mention that there was a new White House dog moving in and a picture of Chelsea was put up in the background. To me, it is funny how those who defend Limbaugh for the picture of Chelsea because he never actually said she was the White House dog are typically the same ones that insist that Letterman "obviously" meant the joke to be about the 14-year old daughter even though Letterman never said which daughter.
Either way, the event did happen just like with Letterman; both claimed a mistake (Letterman about which daughter went to the baseball game and Limbaugh about the picture) and both apologized.

Scott: I think your intentions and motivations in writing your opinion in the
first were disgusting and premeditated. You knew how the readers would react to
your comments. You flatly wrote what you did to inflame passions and wicked
contention. You did all this for your own aggrandizement bringing you into the
limelight of useless contention and controversy. Yup!!! You got what you wished
for. May I ask, "Is this world a better place because of your opinion
piece?" I think not. Shame on you as a human being with gifts and talents
that could be used to lift and urge the human soul to search for higher ground.

And that, Scott, cannot be defended.

I'm completely at a loss for words (at least socially acceptable words)
when it comes to addressing the blatantly closed-minded and ignorant attitudes
that have been presented by so many readers.
It's really a shame the majority of you waste your time/income on a newspaper. It seems that your minds are already completely made up. Just to put your minds at ease, YES there is a liberal conspiracy to steal your guns, religion, and eventually souls (INSERT SARCASM HERE!!!).

Much ado about nothing. Letterman messed up and apologized. Palin, as usual,
went for the publicity. Contacting Letterman, asking for an explanation and
apology would have sufficed. But Caribou Barbie always goes for the stage,

There is no politics here. It is plain and simple, you wrote an opinion piece
praiseing Letterman's shameful remarks about women. When we put down the
other sex, especially the way Letterman did, it is not funny. It is disgusting.
When you defend such behavior it is equally disgusting. The recipient of the
joke could of been man or woman, liberal or conservative, and it would be

stepped, and can't go back. This is the quality of HER supporters, and if
this is the quality of voters we have in the GOP, I'll vote elsewhere until
they go. We should have a right within our party, to have this discussion of If
Palin is presidential or not. The name calling - that tells me all I need to
know about those that support her. I also feel that most of those vile e-mails
and responses came from outside Utah. At Least, I hope so.

meant no harm. He made a funny observation that had nothing to do with a 14 yr

I also think the extreme responses on newspaper comment boards are sometimes
amusing and usually should be disregarded. However, it would have been much
more informative for you to address the substantive criticisms to your article.
It is easy to laugh at the extremes as if no one could possibly have a
legitimate disagreement with you argument. I thought there were also several
legitimate criticisms of your bias in that particular article and the general
double standard that is used when writing anything about Sarah Palin. I'm
not a huge Palin fan, but to claim her defense of her daughter was pure
political opportunism is naive and typical of most media types. I generally
like your columns though.

Mormon thing? You cant learn anything from Pierce's character because of

judgments upon him for a freaking opinion. I do know that because I read his
column he in fact succeeded in his job as a columnist. That and his take on

Letterman was out of line and careless with his joke writing. I don't
think he ever meant to imply the younger daughter and his apology (while at
least a couple of days too late) seemed appropriate to me under the
circumstances. In the end he didn't make excuses and seemed sincere. As
for Palin, any surprise that she is trying to milk it for all it's worth
demonstrates a troubling naivety about the nature of politicians. I don't
think either party has taken the moral high road but what do you expect from a
late night show host and a politician?

Letterman told a dumb joke. Lots of people tell jokes and a lot of those jokes
really aren't funny. It really doesn't matter which daughter
Letterman was refering to. Yes, Bristol committed a transgression in sleeping
with her boyfriend and getting pregnant. Plenty of folks make mistakes in their
life. Does this mean then they have to be the butt of peoples jokes forever
afterwards or is there a chance they can learn from their experience and move
forward? Maybe that's the part that was so offensive in the first place, I
don't know.

No respectable parent whose child was the subject of a sick SEX joke, would
allow that to stand without a response. You suggest the response should have
been done privately. However, since the joke was made PUBLICLY, the demand for
an apology had to be made PUBLICLY, not for publicity's sake, but OUT OF
RESPECT AND AS A SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR HER DAUGHTER. AGAIN, no respectable parent
allows their child to be used publicly in a such a sick, DISGUSTING way without
responding PUBLICLY. How much respect do you think your child would have for

stone-faced and stone cold? They might not say it, but any pedestal you may
