Film review: Simple-minded 'Year One' painfully unfunny
24 comments | Read story
Not only was there virtually no humorous moments, the movie was in utter bad taste.
I'm trying to imagine what kind of person would even enjoy this trash of a movie.
I had a feeling I was in for a bad movie when I got to the ticket counter and there was a note on the window that read - "Year One is a sexually explicit movie that degrades religion and women, there are no refunds for this movie"...
As a fan of Jack Black, I am incredibly disappointed in him for being involved with such a piece of garbage.
Save your time and money - do not see this movie
Was this supposed to be a comedy? I am not sure how some of these movies get green-lighted. Worthless as entertainment. I would advise everyone to stay away from this one. Let it die a miserable death.
Jeff I find it very offensive and sexist every time you list at the bottom of your review that there is "violence against women". Why can't you just list that there is violence or if you have to be specific violence against human beings. Are we not equal? I can understand when you list "violence against children" because violence against children can be more offensive than violence against adults, but also the word "children" includes girls and boys.
And to the people that commented. Why is it when women participate in anything it is "Degrading"? Both men and women can do degrading things but only women are singled out by people like you.
I would appreciate it if you would let our World Progress.
You think it's "progress" to stop pointing out when there's violence against women portrayed in a movie?
Let me ask you a question: when was the last time a woman was convicted of raping a man?
Your comment is the epitome of political correctness gone insane!
Can you PLEASE find something worthwhile to get offended about? There are starving children, victims of abuse, and so many REAL problems... to get bothered by such PC nonsense is so incredibly small-minded, petty, and selfish.
And yes, violence against women is often meant to degrade them. I am glad Jeff lists it thusly and keep your sexist accusations a little toned down.
And, I never said that only women could be victims.
And there simply are not just as many female rapists as male rapists. That is just silly talk.
It is wrong to hurt either sex. But hitting a woman, in my book, is worse than hitting a man. Sorry.
You're in fantastic company matt.
At the Utah state prison there are almost as many female sex offenders as there are male, so singling out violence against women in a movie is sexist. Do I have that right?
Frankly, you're looney.
Fact: men commit violent acts against women far more than women commit violent acts against men, and that has always been the case, everywhere. I don't need to "educate" myself before stating this generalized fact. Any statements to the contrary are simply absurd.
Fact: as the physically stronger sex, men have an inherent responsibility--at least in an elightened social society with modern social mores--to restrain themselves from exerting that strength over women. That is, of course, unless women prefer living under fundamentalist Sharial law, where men are divinely appointed as superior to women and violence is commonplace and acceptable.
Here in the U.S. men try to respect women--despite the fact that they are physically weaker--and one of the ways we show that respect is to NOT CONDONE PORTRAYALS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. This is NOT disrespectful of women, it is EXACTLY the opposite, it is highly RESPECTFUL of women!
This "respect" you show women is condescending. Men and women alike should be respected out of a commitment to human rights, not out of a sense of "I'm superior/bigger/stronger than women. So by not hitting them I'm being nice." Regardless of size or strength, physical abuse is ALWAYS wrong. It's not some continuum of "Well, hitting this one is bad, but hitting that one is worse" Small people can be violent. Large people can be victims. And physical sex is superficial to either case.
Finally, I highly DOUBT you are capable of any real respect, whatsoever, for women. You are incapable of seeing past a woman's physical sex and giving her the respect she deserves, based on her own capabilities, talents, skills, and intelligence, the same way I'm sure you do when you give respect to a man.
