Just waiting | 4:46 p.m. June 3, 2009
OK Ute fans, let's hear all your hatred for BYU...can't wait for all of your posts!
Matt | 4:47 p.m. June 3, 2009
He is doing it the day before so he doesn't have to make the trip to Provo. He is going to Washington even though he would be better off at BYU.
Olsen repeat........ | 4:50 p.m. June 3, 2009
This will be just like big bad Ben, but with big Heaps instead. Check back in four years and he will be somewhere else.

Nah.... | 4:51 p.m. June 3, 2009
stay at Washington and play before your hometown fans who will be attending your games...
Interesting Non-Announcement | 4:54 p.m. June 3, 2009
It would seem very odd for Heaps to announce that he's going anywhere but BYU on the eve of BYU's Jr. day, but I'm not taking any of Mr. Harmon's sources that seriously until it comes from the recruit himself. In fact, it's hard to take some recruits seriously until signing day when they no longer have any choice. Regardless, I'm glad he's choosing now so that if he's going to be a cougar then other top prospects will want to play on his offense and if he's not then other QB's will consider BYU.
No Waiting | 4:58 p.m. June 3, 2009
from this Ute fan. The better the teams, the better the game at the end of November. Bring it.
Anonymous | 4:59 p.m. June 3, 2009
YYYYEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go COUGARS!!!!!!!!
RE: Just waiting | 5:00 p.m. June 3, 2009
Why is the first comment after this insightful and promising article about the Utes. Why is everybody so caught up in what the Ute fans are doing? Let's just be excited about Bronco's recruiting class and quit complaining about Utah. Go Cougs! and Go Heaps!
No hate | 5:00 p.m. June 3, 2009
No hate going on here, just typical missinformation by the Des News. All the sources I've been reading online have him going to Washington, but who knows if those are biased reports. On the flip side, we know the Deseret News is a biased source for BYU. I guess we'll find out on Thursday.
#1 QB | 5:01 p.m. June 3, 2009
What happened to the last #1 rated QB to commit to the Y.....Ben Olson, injury prone, transferred to UCLA after his mission. Heaps....go ahead and pledge to BYU. Im from Pasadena and have had season tickets to UCLA for 13 years. Im a BYU graduate. I thought Ben Olson was going to be a Heisman Trophy winner after his first start at college against Utah. He put up great numbers against them, then he fell off the planet! I'm happy he didnt stay at BYU.

Maybe Heaps commits to BYU because I read QB Dallas Lloyd, Utah County boy, committed to Stanford...competition isn't going to be as hard.

Heaps, you better be the real deal!
I was about to post something | 5:01 p.m. June 3, 2009
but I had to get out of the way because Max Hall just threw an interception to me.

No hatred for BYU here. I just think the false optimism in cougartown is funnier each year. What's the catchy phrase going to be this season?
Yay Heaps | 5:02 p.m. June 3, 2009
He'll do very well at BYU, we need a legendary QB, and this is a great chance to get another one. Especially because other fantastic recruits want to follow Heaps!

Liking it | 5:04 p.m. June 3, 2009
Utes don't read the Des News
Why Would We Hate BYU | 5:05 p.m. June 3, 2009
We love BYU, we beat you in every sport. You're our favorite little brother. We even won the baseball tournament as a 6 seed, first opponent, BYU. BYU has been a wonderful number in the win column, thanks. And good luck Heaps
Drew | 5:06 p.m. June 3, 2009
Come on Jake--we need you, man! Can't wait to see you in Cougar blue!
re: waiting | 5:18 p.m. June 3, 2009
Sorry, but as a Ute fan this would be a great get for the Cougars, and the conference.

But remember, didn't Harmon list Teo as solidly in BYU's corner earlier this year?

If he does commit, lets hope he doesn't turn out to be the next Ben Olson.
Just waiting | 5:19 p.m. June 3, 2009
OK BYU fans, just waiting for you to express your hatred for Ute football. Stop hating the Utes and root for your own team the way we do!!
Cougar Fan | 5:19 p.m. June 3, 2009
That would be great if Heaps signs with BYU. We'll take every athlete we can get!!! That being said, I still love the fact that recruiting at BYU has less to do with win-loss records and more to do with desire. I want athletes at BYU who (like me) always dreamt of being Cougars. Sure, we'll accept those converted to the Cougar faithful, but I love it when kids get to fulfill their dreams. That said, I wish Jake the best wherever he goes (BYU, Washington, Utah, or wherever else). I hope it ends up a great decision for him!
Nice but.... | 5:21 p.m. June 3, 2009
This would be a very nice pickup for Bronco. But will it really upgrade what BYU needs? They always have good QB's don't they? When will the attention be moved to DB's with speed?
How About Riley Nelson? | 5:24 p.m. June 3, 2009
Do you want to let him go back to Utah State? Sometimes interfering with a kids career as in Nelsons should be investigated by the NCAA. I can just imagine the sales pitch used to get these youngsters to sign with schools. I thought BYU was a church owned college? Greed is everywhere!
Catchy Phrase 2009 | 5:44 p.m. June 3, 2009

Beat Down Two Yewtes...(UU get it!!)

Here, let me 'splain it for you...First, There was this movie called "My cousin Venny"....
waste of talent | 5:57 p.m. June 3, 2009
Good luck
Anonymous | 6:17 p.m. June 3, 2009
Quarterback hasn't been the problem for the Kewgs. They need a secondary more than anything. There's nothing intimidating about four goofy slow white guys.....just ask Quinton Ganther.
Floyd the Ute | 6:28 p.m. June 3, 2009
BYU needs Heaps more than Heaps needs BYU.

Assuming he is a top talent it will be hard to excel because he will be surrounded with a mediocre supporting cast.

Could be a bad thing | 6:42 p.m. June 3, 2009
I think this could end up being a bad thing for BYU football.

For the next few years now no good qb will even think about going to BYU, because this guy is the best HS QB in the nation.

If he ends up like Ben Olsen did (leaves or is no good), then BYU will have no semi-good QBs, because no one good would have wanted to come play back up with no chance to start.

It could be like the Crowton era again.
Werner | 6:50 p.m. June 3, 2009
This wonderful news. Everyone knows top rated quarterbacks always turn out to be great.
true blue | 7:11 p.m. June 3, 2009
This guy is really good. Hopefully it translates at the college level. He'll have year to learn under Max Hall then he and Nelson will be able to compete for the starting position. I think heaps will win that competition, but nelson is too good of an athlete to keep off the field.
Sandy Claws | 7:19 p.m. June 3, 2009
I just hope he can help us beat TCU. Utah will be mediocre for the next few years.
Big B | 7:55 p.m. June 3, 2009
Holy cow. Some of you are nuts. This would be a huge recruit and a great thing for our team. Even if it doesn't pan out, that's recruiting. You wait and see. I don't remember the QB cupboard being bare after Olsen left. I loved Jo. Beck and love Max Hall.
Weather or not he goes on a mission is his choice and none of my buisiness! Coach makes sure everyone comes in with their eyes open, so I will assume his is a good kid with high character until I am proved wrong by him.
Go Cougs and come on Heaps!
Heisman | 8:25 p.m. June 3, 2009
Jake Heaps will win the Heisman if he come to BYU!
Howard S. | 8:49 p.m. June 3, 2009
Heaps is a sure bet to win at least one Heisman and lead the Cougars to a national championship.
Willy | 9:02 p.m. June 3, 2009
Max Hall will be gone when he enrolls at BYU. Heaps is just going to be a Senior this year. He will probably redshirt his freshman year, while Nelson is a sophmore. Heaps will be on the bench two more years, and Heaps will be the starter his jumior and senior year. What about Jason Munns wasnt he a top recruit in Washington two years ago? I wonder where he fits into the equation when he gets back from his mission? Also James Lark was pretty highly touted also, what about him??
Daniel W. | 9:08 p.m. June 3, 2009
It will be fun to "heap" it on Utah and TCU.
Anonymous | 10:09 p.m. June 3, 2009
Props to BYU, but a "sure bet??" just like that old Quest for Perfection, right? LOL.
Anonymous | 10:16 p.m. June 3, 2009
Come on over Heaps! We're looking forward to it.
#1 QB recruit in the country on his way to BYU baby!
I know you hate it Ute fans, so go ahead and post your lame hate comments. You can't spoil this party:

GOOO Mighty COUGARS!
Olsen is no Heaps | 10:19 p.m. June 3, 2009
Ben Olsen is not Jake Heaps. Jake Heaps has been a proficient QB since he was at least 13. Not to mention 2 straight undefeated HS State championships. 28-0! I like those numbers. Besides which I get a lot better feeling from him than I did from Olsen.

And to whoever said BYU had a bad supporting cast? Okay. . .Harvey Unga didn't throw 5 interceptions, and neither did Dennis Pitta, or Mckay Jacobsen, or O'Neill Chambers, or Steven Covey, so I think our supporting cast will be fine. Our supporting cast put points on you the way no team was able to do last year. So with a No. 1 QB you should be very, very afraid.

I really hope we get him. It would be awkward for him to be at BYU and be like, "sorry cougs, I'm going with whoever else." I've got my fingers crossed.
Re: Daniel W. | 10:20 p.m. June 3, 2009
Yeah, and he will throw heaps of TDs and win heaps of games.

I can't wait. This is going to a heap of fun.
More QBs | 10:24 p.m. June 3, 2009
Heaps will be a nice get, but our QB cupboard is getting really full. If Heaps doesn't go on a mission then we'll have Lark, Munns, Nelson, and Heaps all on the roster together, and I'm guessing at least two would transfer rather than be content riding the pine.
Cougar Fan | 10:54 p.m. June 3, 2009
I'll believe it when I see it. High School is a different game then college. I don't put anything anyone says to fact until I watch the first game. After seeing we play Oklahoma, we'll be playing in the Las Vegas bowl again this year. At least it's another bowl. Go Cougs.
van l. | 10:59 p.m. June 3, 2009
They announced on Kjr radio here in Seattle that Jake is definitely going to BYU. I saw him play in the state championship game and he is the real deal at the high school level. No reason to think he won't compete at the next level. That will leave Riley, Munns and Lark in 2011 for him to compete with. Munns wasn't that good in high school but after his mission you never know. Riley enough said he can compete at any level. Lark still an unknown. This is a great day for BYU football. Let's hope 4 years from now we are still singing Jake's praises.
What? | 12:03 a.m. June 4, 2009
No one interferred with Riley Nelson. He saw the writing on the wall at Utah State. What 2 wins in 2 years. All players who leave their schools for more than a year are free to change their schools. It happens all the time across the nation, but when someone leave their school to go to BYU out comes the conspiracy nuts and those who claim, without any evidence whatsoever, claiming that a BYU is cheating. Their implied message is that BYU couldn't compete without cheating. A smear campaign if I ever saw one.

I agree BYU needs to realy concentrate on some speedier safeties and corner backs, some taller than 5' 9", regardless of ethnicity.

It will be truly interesting to see what Heaps does and where he actually goes.
Shoemaker? | 12:28 a.m. June 4, 2009
Cougar Fan @ 10:54, agreed. I wish Heaps only the best, wherever he goes--probably BYU, looks like. Good! But right on--he's got to play the games first.

Anyone else remember all the buzz about Paul Shoemaker even before Ben Olson? Shoemaker was supposed to be the next Ty Detmer and then some. Make no mistake and give the man his due: Shoemaker *was* an awesome HS QB. He had numbers about as dazzling as Heaps does. However, he never did much on-field for the Cougs--and certainly didn't live up to the always sky-high expectations in Provo.

Bottom line: It's great to have the inside track on the #1 QB. But PLEASE hold off on scheduling that Heisman presentation just yet. Jake Heaps still has to prove he can play at the college-ball level. Seriously. If BYU's lucky, that won't take long. If BYU's unlucky... well, you all know the story.
BYU blue | 12:33 a.m. June 4, 2009
There's a reason why this kid is being recruited by Tennessee, LSU, Washington, etc. - nice pick up for Bronco and his staff if in fact he does commit tomorrow.

The MWC is continuing to build and needs to have some more years like last year to take the automatic BCS bid away from the Big East. Heaps will certainly help keep BYU at the top. Let's hope Utah and TCU can continue to be strong and have a few other programs step up.
Shoemaker | 12:35 a.m. June 4, 2009
Anyone remember him? Kid didn't lose a game all of his HS career...came to provo, hardly won a game and lost his job to Feterik. How overblown can we make this stuff?
As they say in Provo,... | 1:19 a.m. June 4, 2009
"There is always next year, and next year, and next year,..."

Oh Great | 1:32 a.m. June 4, 2009
All we need now are more dilusional BYU fans getting excited all over again. Haven't we done this before every year? Then we get disappointed when the team lets us down? People talking last year about "possible national championship for BYU"...

We are 2 games into a 5 or 6 game losing streak. The nightmare of the lost quest, lost badly to the U, and to that high school team from Arizona in a miserable bowl... Come on people. BYU football has changed. We were supposed to be good after they built that in-door practice facility. Then we were suppposed to be good when Bozo began coaching. Then we were supposed to be good when... the list continues.
Sj Bobkins | 2:00 a.m. June 4, 2009
From the Seattle Times:
Skyline quarterback Jake Heaps, regarded as the top high-school prospect in the state and one of the top QB recruits in the nation, has picked Brigham Young University over Washington, two sources told The Seattle Times.

The two sources unnamed I believe are his Sammamish high school coach and his dad. Both requesting anonymity, until the announcement on Thursday. Nick Montana will be in Seattle for the UW Junior Day, this Saturday. He is expected to commit to the Huskies, in light of the Heaps situation. I also believe that Steve Sarkusian has been notified, the atmosphere in the coaches office Wednesday night was one of anticipation awaiting the visit of Montana, no one was wasting words talking about Jake Heaps. Washington already has nine commitments for its Class of 2010, a group that is rated No. 9 in the country by Scout.com and second in the Pac-10.

Scout's list of the top QB Factories:
5. BYU

The roll call of great quarterbacks is mesmerizing. Everyone knows about legends like Ty Detmer and Jim McMahon, but lesser known playmakers like Brandon Doman and Jon Walsh put up impressive seasons that kept the tradition rolling. Throw in John Beck, who had an incredibly productive and clutch career, and the decent career of Max Hall, and BYU has been special for a few decades.

BYU's fab five

1. Ty Detmer - He set the bar high for future college quarterbacks to shoot for and won the Heisman with a magical 1990 season highlighted by his nationally televised 28-21 win over #1 Miami.
2. Jim McMahon - His Hail Mary and comeback win over SMU in the 1980 Holiday Bowl is still one of the greatest performances of all-time.
3. Robbie Bosco - Robbie Bosco won a national title. His stats weren't too shabby throwing 63 touchdown passes and 8,148 yards in two years.
Steve Young - One of the best all-around quarterbacks of all-time,
Gifford Nielson - Nielson was the one who put the BYU passing game on the map.

utwingnut | 5:41 a.m. June 4, 2009
My guess, redshirt the first year, two year mission, grey shirt to learn the offense and get back in shape, three or four year starter. At least that's how it would look in a perfect world. :)
akk | 6:26 a.m. June 4, 2009
Nice to see the Y gets another highly rated QB.... just doesn't matter until the get some speed on defense.
