Dick Harmon: Could top QB be headed to the Cougars?
128 comments | Read story
Go COUGARS!!!!!!!!
Maybe Heaps commits to BYU because I read QB Dallas Lloyd, Utah County boy, committed to Stanford...competition isn't going to be as hard.
Heaps, you better be the real deal!
No hatred for BYU here. I just think the false optimism in cougartown is funnier each year. What's the catchy phrase going to be this season?
But remember, didn't Harmon list Teo as solidly in BYU's corner earlier this year?
If he does commit, lets hope he doesn't turn out to be the next Ben Olson.
Beat Down Two Yewtes...(UU get it!!)
Here, let me 'splain it for you...First, There was this movie called "My cousin Venny"....
Assuming he is a top talent it will be hard to excel because he will be surrounded with a mediocre supporting cast.
For the next few years now no good qb will even think about going to BYU, because this guy is the best HS QB in the nation.
If he ends up like Ben Olsen did (leaves or is no good), then BYU will have no semi-good QBs, because no one good would have wanted to come play back up with no chance to start.
It could be like the Crowton era again.
Weather or not he goes on a mission is his choice and none of my buisiness! Coach makes sure everyone comes in with their eyes open, so I will assume his is a good kid with high character until I am proved wrong by him.
Go Cougs and come on Heaps!
#1 QB recruit in the country on his way to BYU baby!
I know you hate it Ute fans, so go ahead and post your lame hate comments. You can't spoil this party:
GOOO Mighty COUGARS!
And to whoever said BYU had a bad supporting cast? Okay. . .Harvey Unga didn't throw 5 interceptions, and neither did Dennis Pitta, or Mckay Jacobsen, or O'Neill Chambers, or Steven Covey, so I think our supporting cast will be fine. Our supporting cast put points on you the way no team was able to do last year. So with a No. 1 QB you should be very, very afraid.
I really hope we get him. It would be awkward for him to be at BYU and be like, "sorry cougs, I'm going with whoever else." I've got my fingers crossed.
I can't wait. This is going to a heap of fun.
I agree BYU needs to realy concentrate on some speedier safeties and corner backs, some taller than 5' 9", regardless of ethnicity.
It will be truly interesting to see what Heaps does and where he actually goes.
Anyone else remember all the buzz about Paul Shoemaker even before Ben Olson? Shoemaker was supposed to be the next Ty Detmer and then some. Make no mistake and give the man his due: Shoemaker *was* an awesome HS QB. He had numbers about as dazzling as Heaps does. However, he never did much on-field for the Cougs--and certainly didn't live up to the always sky-high expectations in Provo.
Bottom line: It's great to have the inside track on the #1 QB. But PLEASE hold off on scheduling that Heisman presentation just yet. Jake Heaps still has to prove he can play at the college-ball level. Seriously. If BYU's lucky, that won't take long. If BYU's unlucky... well, you all know the story.
The MWC is continuing to build and needs to have some more years like last year to take the automatic BCS bid away from the Big East. Heaps will certainly help keep BYU at the top. Let's hope Utah and TCU can continue to be strong and have a few other programs step up.
We are 2 games into a 5 or 6 game losing streak. The nightmare of the lost quest, lost badly to the U, and to that high school team from Arizona in a miserable bowl... Come on people. BYU football has changed. We were supposed to be good after they built that in-door practice facility. Then we were suppposed to be good when Bozo began coaching. Then we were supposed to be good when... the list continues.
Skyline quarterback Jake Heaps, regarded as the top high-school prospect in the state and one of the top QB recruits in the nation, has picked Brigham Young University over Washington, two sources told The Seattle Times.
The two sources unnamed I believe are his Sammamish high school coach and his dad. Both requesting anonymity, until the announcement on Thursday. Nick Montana will be in Seattle for the UW Junior Day, this Saturday. He is expected to commit to the Huskies, in light of the Heaps situation. I also believe that Steve Sarkusian has been notified, the atmosphere in the coaches office Wednesday night was one of anticipation awaiting the visit of Montana, no one was wasting words talking about Jake Heaps. Washington already has nine commitments for its Class of 2010, a group that is rated No. 9 in the country by Scout.com and second in the Pac-10.
5. BYU
The roll call of great quarterbacks is mesmerizing. Everyone knows about legends like Ty Detmer and Jim McMahon, but lesser known playmakers like Brandon Doman and Jon Walsh put up impressive seasons that kept the tradition rolling. Throw in John Beck, who had an incredibly productive and clutch career, and the decent career of Max Hall, and BYU has been special for a few decades.
BYU's fab five
1. Ty Detmer - He set the bar high for future college quarterbacks to shoot for and won the Heisman with a magical 1990 season highlighted by his nationally televised 28-21 win over #1 Miami.
2. Jim McMahon - His Hail Mary and comeback win over SMU in the 1980 Holiday Bowl is still one of the greatest performances of all-time.
3. Robbie Bosco - Robbie Bosco won a national title. His stats weren't too shabby throwing 63 touchdown passes and 8,148 yards in two years.
Steve Young - One of the best all-around quarterbacks of all-time,
Gifford Nielson - Nielson was the one who put the BYU passing game on the map.
