Government greed has sunk California

Greed | 5:48 a.m. May 3, 2009
I wouldn't throw all the blame on "GREED" lets remember that California also has a problem with Mexican Nationals living off of Government welfare and free medical care. Stop the borders from floating in the illegals, and clean up the problem of those living inside the country, all of a sudden you'll see a profitable State. But according to Nancy CRS Pelosi, she'll scream bloody murder if her and her husband see their businesses collapse due to the hiring of so many illegals. Perhaps the State needs to find a way to ship Pelosi out of the country for starters!!!!

Can We Ever Learn? | 7:29 a.m. May 3, 2009
Liberalism and illegal Mexicans have brought California down. Our country is not far behind. When you furnish government supplemented housing, free health care, wellfare, and free schooling to the illegals and those unwilling to work, you have an impossible situation. The Little Red Hens then largely stop producing since they do not get to enjoy the results of their labors. Of course, we have Obama and Nancy Pelosi, who happens to be from that liberal state, to save us. The housing crisis, which started our financial downfall, was brought on by making subprime loans to those who could not even make the reduced payments. Thanks Carter and Clinton for mandating this. It was also the greed of the financial institutions encouraged by Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac. Fannie and Freddy were only doing what they were told to do by these two presidents. Bush did not correct the situation. Obama will save us by giving lots of our money to those institutions. I feel sorry for our descendents who will have to pay for all of it.

For Timj:

Yes, CA Gov Arnold is a Repub, and once talked like a Repub. But the state legislature, controlled by uber liberal Democrats, is responsible for the budget. Gov Arnold battled the best he could. The state budget woes would be much worse under a Dem gov.

The "govenator" is nothing more than a democrate hiding behind the facade of a republican. What do expect from someone who married a Kennedy.

A few more facts | 8:47 a.m. May 3, 2009
Of course, George Will fails to mention property taxes in CA. CA ranks #45--one of the lowest rates for property tax as a percentage of home value, and #17 as a percentage of income. Proposition 13, courtesy of Howard Jarvis (born in Utah and graduated from Utah State Univ.) a Republican, put a stranglehold on CA's ability to raise revenue. Sales tax increased as a result of Prop 13 and school budgets were also slashed as a result of Prop 13. I can remember in 1988 paying more in property taxes for our "fixer" bungalow in Los Angeles than the Pres. of my husband's company who lived in a mansion in Beverly Hills. (and my husband prepared the Pres. tax return).
With an economy the 7th largest in the world it is no wonder CA has huge budget challenges. BTW, budgets in CA require a 2/3 majority, so 1/3 of the state legislature can hold up a budget.

We moved to California two years ago, after careful deliberation. While the people in the trenches are wonderful, the state government has gotten out of control. I will be voting no on all propositions May 19. There's too much at stake and Sacramento definitely needs a couple of 2 x 4's.

It's quite simple | 9:46 a.m. May 3, 2009
This nation has been living a lie. Neither liberals nor fake conservatives believe that we are created equal, and that the Constitution within the bounds of moral law is the supreme law of the law.

You have some who say anything goes when it comes to capitalism. Taking advantage of and exploiting others is exceptable because they refuse to be governed by moral law. They believe that their talents and contributions are thousands or even millions of times more valuable than those who are the engine of their success. Their free market explanation to justify it violates moral law.

Then there are those under the guise of a special right who want a guaranteed six figures, health care, a beamer, and a big screen irrespective of their efforts. Again a violation of moral law.

Because we have never too closely adhered to what we know much less ventured into the realm of the higher laws, our liberal and conservative judgement, reasoning, and solutions will never apply nor be a satisfactory and permanent solution.

A rededication to the principles of moral law is the only way we will ever become a great nation of sovereigns again.

Timj- the Governor of California doesn't run the State- the public employees unions do. It doesn't matter what a person calls themselves partywise... it matters what their actions are.

California's solution is obvious. Shut the borders down so American's and business can't leave. As long as they have the freedom to leave California will never be able to keep afloat. Freedom is such an inconvenient truth to democrats.

Calfornia, michgan, new york are perfect examples of how liberal democratic spending,

destroys places ecomincally and finacially,

and Obama WILL do this to the rest the United States if this government spending is continued to be allowed by people NO MATTER WHAT PARTY IS IN CONTROL.

As a native Californian for 56 years, I can honestly say that California hasn't had a decent gov. for over 40 years except for Regan {raised demo and demo until 11 years ago}. As for the legislature, what a joke. As for the schools, CA used to have the best in the country until the liberals and the teachers unions lowered the standards. My husband went to a comuity college and worked in the placement office, they had HS grads. asking questions like, what is a dependant, etc. The liberals etc, said everyone should go to college wheter one is preared or not. Another problem is the antibusiness, pro union stance of the liberals there, San Francisco was once home to lots of corporation headquarters and other large business', but no longer. Most moved out of S.F. and now out of state.Levi Strauss, Rice-A-Roni, etc. As for our once great port, now empty, thanks to unions again, the ships go to Oakland or other states. Moved almost two years ago, because of the lack of good schooling for my daughter without the PC crowd and to a better job climate.

California's woes | 2:58 p.m. May 4, 2009
I know this is tangential but, since Californian natural disasters has been brought up....

The only time I tried to visit (the Bay Area in) California (about 1985 I think) there was no access to the beach because of recent mudslides. Most legendary, of course, was the big earthquake (an 8.3) a whole hundred years ago in 1906 that toppled most of San Francisco. Then there was the (7.1)Bay area earthquake of 1989 that made the Bay bridge impassable for a while.

There's nothing wrong with California except, some might say, certain lifestyles and this is only in certain areas. Some have also taken exception to Hollywood and its pitiful movies. Some think that God hasn't liked that area for a good while now, even before Hollywood and the Rock Hudson way of life. However, when it comes to "acts of God", let everyone judge for themselves.
