Dual threat quarterback | 12:27 a.m. April 3, 2009
That to me is where he will be the biggest playmaker. He needs to be there to be a running QB, for one, to protect Hall more. And secondly, to diversify the offense. He should throw a few passes too, so that defenses don't always think he's going to run all the time. Hall can run sometimes to as long as he hangs on to the ball. What my biggest hope is, is that they are secretly planning to use him at that position as well as receiver and that they are simply keeping it low profile so that defenses won't key on him.

BYU is going to need every trick they have to compete against UO.

OU Oklahoma

GO AGGIES! You guys should be taking about a real program! Anderson is going to be coach of the year!
Re: 12:31 p.m. | 1:40 p.m. April 3, 2009
I'm not talking about the outcome of the game, I'm talking about the fact that Utah couldn't defend trick plays. The last time they used trick plays on us we shut them down, hard.
The question is not | 1:54 p.m. April 3, 2009
Whether BYU will put points on the board vs OU, because they will. The question is more how many points can we keep Oklahoma from getting! The question will definitely be who will come to play defense. BYU has a lot more experience at defense this year and is looking to be a lot stronger than last year. (Which isn't tough to do, I know). So, I think a huge, HUGE key will be the pass rush, putting pressure on Sam Bradford. TCU, with their amazing pass rush couldn't seem to do it. But if my sources are correct Oklahoma is actually breaking in a new O-line the same as us. So that makes things interesting. Bernard Afutiti and Jordan Pendleton will be athletic pass rushers, and will hopefully bring the heat so keep the secondary from getting too burned. OU also has a productive run game. If Terrance Hooks and Matt Ah You up their game they should be able to fill the gaps well, and faster DB's will be able to contain the edges better than last year. It's going to be a heckuva game but I think BYU has a shot.

Oklahoma is going to be a heck of a game. Im a big cougar fan. I just dont know if they are going to win it. Its a big game.
Don't Overlook Florida State | 2:59 p.m. April 3, 2009
All I hear on this board is how BYU is going to do against Oklahoma. Just remember, Florida State is on BYU's schedule too.

Covey, hmmm... | 3:18 p.m. April 3, 2009
One of the Covey's played QB for L. Edwards and sustained multiple concussions the year he was a starter. Toward the end of the season, Edwards picked up Covey's helmet and noted that all or most of the padding had been removed. Covey claimed that the padding restricted his head movement, so he took it out.

So, this new Stephen Covey...brother, son, nephew, ???

An asset to the team??? What do you think, folks?

Remember Tulane, Utah and TCU are all on BYU's schedule. It is going to be a tuff and long year for BYU.

What term memory loss? Trick plays and running it down the utes throats put the points on the board. Time you go visit the U hospital to get some treat for ute disorder.

Oklahoma is the first game on BYU's schedule. ONE game at a time!
Following in Collie's footsteps? | 5:19 p.m. April 3, 2009
Maybe Covey can take over the important job of self-righteous commenter vacated by Elder Collie. Without it we might start to think the Cougars aren't doing the right things on and off the field and loose our respect for you as stripling warriors.

have in common with the Utes defense?

Answer: Both are excited to catch passes from Max Hall!
missed opportunities? | 9:39 a.m. April 4, 2009
Too bad the coaches didn't give Covey a chance to play some QB last season in the Northern Iowa, UCLA, New Mexico, or Wyoming games. Would have been nice to see what he could do in a real game.

Coaches can talk all they want about giving guys a chance to play but it's always the same old same old because coaches are very superstitious and don't want to go outside their comfort zones. I'm surprised Brandon Doman didn't make that happen considering he went through the same thing and didn't get to play QB until Peterson got hurt in the next-to-last game of the 2000 season (New Mexico). I guess now Doman has become just another coach.

Re: All those stoned Tricks poster--LOL

Don't know how many of those wonderful Bronkie tricks were used?????????? As it seems the score was 48-24--THUD.

Yep, another "big" QB chant can't make it at his position. Just put him in a fed shirt with a big "K" on it and I'm sure he will be another NFL prospect as a receiver!
Here We Go Again | 11:19 a.m. April 4, 2009
Did anyone notice that Mendenhall mentioned commendable personal characteristics for the primary reason to put Covey at receiver? This really is the epitome of BYU - good, solid, high-character kids with almost no high-level speed and athleticism. It is the reason why Mendenhall sounds more like the GAs I am currently listening to than he does a football coach. BYU simply CANNOT bring in top notch athletes so they instead emphasize the personal characteristics. I tip my hat to the type of men that BYU is producing - but the reality is that it will not produce more than 8 or 9 victories on the field this season. It will RARELY be enough to beat top level teams.
Re: Here we go | 12:54 p.m. April 4, 2009
No high level speed and athleticism? Did you watch Covey play HS ball? Did you know that he was clocked at a 4.4 in the forty before his mission as a QB? It's true. He is lightning quick and probably is at best a 4.5 40 today due to added weight but he will return to form. So I'll give you a less than high level of speed and athleticism upon return from a mission but when he gets in top form, look out man. He would be an excellent kick returner opposite Mckay Jacobsen or Ashworth. But he and Jacobsen could serve well on punt returns as well. Maybe use them both. Covey has better lateral quickness but McKay is the fastest guy on the team. Go Cougars.
speed argument | 4:21 p.m. April 4, 2009
There are such things as "game speed" and football quickness that exhibit themselves during game play. Quickness and elusiveness is different from flat out vertical speed. Though speed is certainly another feather in the hat that can make a difference, there are some players with football instincts that can make up with SLIGHTLY slower vertical speed. Harvey Unga is somewhat of an example of that. Despite his biggger size he has elusiveness, for his size. Sometimes it also depends on the play. Harvey sprinted around the corner for a 15 yard TD run against TCU, a fast defensive team, in the 2007 game. Curtis Brown exploded through the middle of the defense for a 50 yard TD run in the 2006 New Mexico game despite being a 4.6 player himself. Every play is different and sometimes players look a lot slower or faster than they really are in game play.

"The last time they used trick plays on us we shut them down, hard."

The tdS beat the Utes twice in the last 7 yrs. Both wins came via "magic" in late 4th Qtr rallies. When was the last time the tdS shut us down hard? I can recall a few times we shut YOU down hard, but I don't believe the tdS has beaten us by more than a touchdown since 1996.

Nice try zoob.

48-24. Now THAT's shutting down HARD!

GO UTES!!!
48-24 | 12:57 a.m. April 5, 2009
Your completely lopsided score was due to the fact that one player caused 6 turnovers. If your quarterback had caused 6 turnovers the score would have been 90 to 21, and that's because we would've pulled the starters in the 4th quarter.

I like the score of the '89 game, 70-31 or something like that. Don't think it won't happen again sometime.

I'm referring to the 2007 game and the fact that your "powerful" offense had great field position the whole game, literally on our half of the field all game and we held you to 10 points. That's a defensive beat down as far as I'm concerned. Then with freshman and sophomore skill players we marched up and down the field to the tune of 424 yards or so and still scored 17 points to win the game against your "athletic" defense. In the last game we still also OUTGAINED you in yards, so that tells you that the turnovers really don't even begin to tell the entire story.

So, if you thought just a bit harder with your Ute brain of yours, maybe you'd understand what I said.
re 48-24 | 12:52 p.m. April 5, 2009
It's pretty hard to get more yards then you kitties when we had such a short field all the time lol.
Re: 12:52 p.m. | 3:10 p.m. April 5, 2009
What? . . . nevermind, I won't even try to analyze it.
re: missed opportunities | 3:40 p.m. April 6, 2009
Don't think Peterson got hurt in that game, team just needed a change. He had a habit of throwing the ball to wide open defenders on broken plays. And frustrated Bosco by always moving to shotgun. We will all please remember that Doman also played wide receiver to get himself on the field his junior year. They did try to use him on a few trick plays I recall one play ended in an interception (Feterik is wide open! Throw him the ball! No, why would you throw it there, no, no, no...)
