How does Syracuse drop to #7 with only two losses (1 in region)and they have clinched at least a share of the region championship with 3 games left. Davis moves up to #6 when Syracuse beat them, Davis has 7 losses (4 in region, and our ranked forth in the region. WOW!!!!!!!!!!
Rankings? | 8:53 a.m. Feb. 10, 2009
MaxPreps and USA Today get their info from the coaches who squeak the loudest and toot their own horns. Who cares about their rankings! At least DNews is somewhat impartial.
RE: Rankings? | 10:29 a.m. Feb. 10, 2009
Yes, that makes sense. CBS Sports and USA Today maintain conversations with the 16,432 high school coaches in the nation and pick their favorites to promote.

They do NOT have a computerized system that uses strength of schedule, head-to-head matchups, indirect matchups, winning percentage, and opponent winning percentages to calculate these rankings...
In the end | 11:40 a.m. Feb. 10, 2009
Rankings? DNews somewhat impartial?

DNews doesn't spend a lot of time figuring out these rankings. It's whoever is winning at the time, no matter who they are beating. Plus, they have to put in some 2A teams when they are dominant in their classification even though they probably would not beat most of the teams below them. It does get a lot of attention even though none of these rankings really matter when the state tournaments starts. State Tournament teams, thank goodness, are not seeded by any rankings. I think a coaches poll would help out a lot but there is really no way any rankings could be exactly perfect. In the end, it really doesn't matter anyway. It is fun to speculate though

I think if the HS Coaches are doing their job, they would be contacting these polls. More national attention brings in more interest from college coaches in their programs and players, and in turn more of a chance to obtain scholarships. As a matter of fact I personally know of a number of coaches in this state that do contact the national pollsters.
Re: In the end??? | 1:01 p.m. Feb. 10, 2009
You were last at a 2a game when???

Emery is #4 in 3A and has four losses.....2 of the losses are to who???

Wasatch beat South Sevier by one point in a game that could have went either way. They are ranked #1 in 3A.

They move the 2a teams around at their whim anyway to make sure you "big girls" get your due. example: Richfield moves down this week after two wins and going 18-0.

You want to see some real basketball??? Try South Sevier at Richfield this Thursday!
THAT'S RIGHT!!! | 1:20 p.m. Feb. 10, 2009
After South Sevier & Richfield this Thursday the two teams will have THREE losses between the BOTH TEAMS. One loss to the #1 3A team and TWO LOSSES AMOUNG EACH OTHER! They both have played 3A and 4A teams...so give it a rest.
Reply to rankings... | 1:27 p.m. Feb. 10, 2009
Wasatch did beat South Sevier by 1 and that was with some key players missing. If Wasatch would have had their whole team, it would have been a totally different story.
Could-a Would-a Should-a | 2:20 p.m. Feb. 10, 2009
Wasatch won the game. SS had some key injuries and had just come off a COMPLETE volleyball season. Wasatch is a good team...that's why they're #1 and higher than any 2A team in the top 20. My point is simple. SS and Richfield could compete any night any place with 3A teams. That is not a slam to 3A it was in response that they are ranked in the top 20 "just because." Wasatch beat Emery by 5. Richfield beat them by 8 and SS beat them by 14. Wasacth's three top scores against SS were the same top three scores against Judge memorial??? Again, not a slam....just an the same page as the top 3A teams.
re:Could-a Would-a Should-a | 7:35 p.m. Feb. 10, 2009
Who cares you 1A and 2A schools need to quit whinning about the rankings and enjoy your time in 1A and 2A because when you go up to the next level its a whole new game, for everybody. Rivalrys impact games more than we think, and on any given night a team that is 1-10 could beat a team that is 10-1 based on past history. Some of the teams you compared are some serious rivalrys and I am positive they impacted the games score!! Look at the Boys 3A game last week with Morgan and Bear River that was a huge upset, not a huge rivalry but playing in Morgan is a tough task as Bear River found out.
1A-2A | 8:59 p.m. Feb. 10, 2009
Who says it isn't a 'whole new game' in 1A or 2A. Entire communities shut down for games to go pack the house and make some noise. Richfield and South Sevier are ranked where they belong. They could beat the teams they are ranked above, the teams are not intimidated easy, that is why they are who they are.
Anonymous | 9:00 p.m. Feb. 10, 2009
riverton is the best team in state without a doubt! they just dont beat bingham by 20 for nothing!
Lets be real | 10:21 p.m. Feb. 10, 2009
How can the DNews really rank any of these teams. Lets be real, we have all been to the games but when was the last time you saw any newspaper people attend a girls baskerball game. Those of us who attend know all ten people in the stands and there is NO ONE there from the paper. It is not like you can Tivo the game and watch it later. Since when should we trust a ranking that was done off box scores????
re - Anonymous | 6:08 a.m. Feb. 11, 2009
Any team that can beat Bingham, twice, is the best team in the state. And that goes for the past billion years.
To: lets be real | 10:24 a.m. Feb. 11, 2009
Pack up the family and drive to Richfield tomorrow night. You better get there early because you will have a hard time getting a seat. By the way the bleachers in the balcony will be pulled out as well. To say that no one attends the girls game is a joke. The gate at the Richfield-South Sevier game will probably be more than your boys team makes in 5 games!
WHO CARES about 1A or 2A?? | 10:55 a.m. Feb. 11, 2009
WE ARE NOT WHINING!!!! We are ranked, we are defending the fact that just cuz more kids go to yor school, you are thus better. The rivalry stuff is somewhat true, but Richfield and SS still beat many 3a and 4A teams. Stop by Richfield tommorow for some real fun!!! Two GREAT teams.
Chill | 12:19 p.m. Feb. 11, 2009
Relax Anonymous. Riverton is a great team and might just be the best team in the state. Remember that AF played in the championship last year and returned all of it's starters. One more thing and it's no small thing. Riverton need to get past the first or secound round. The last couple of years I thought they might be a team to contend with and someone knocks them off. They have yet to step it up at the most important time "The Tournament". It's time to stop being satisfied just because you beat Bingham. Here's an idea...Step it up when it counts.

go fremont
GO FREMONT | 12:27 p.m. Feb. 11, 2009
Are you still mad about where your ranked syracuse?? Fremont just HANDED it to you!!!
Agreeing With Chill | 2:00 p.m. Feb. 11, 2009
If you'll remember, two years ago the team that knocked Riverton out early was the AF team. The same girls are playing now for AF that were playing then, and those are the same girls that played in the State Championship last year.
HS Fan | 2:25 p.m. Feb. 11, 2009
I have had the pleasure of watching both AF and Riverton a few times each. Riverton is long and Athletic. They are 10 points better. But will they follow the lead of all their other teams and struggle to move on. I think both teams are very well coached. Both head coaches could make a significant impact as a boys coach. There are fewer
good girls teams each year thanks to club soccer and Volleyball. It makes for a predictable tournament. Riverton hammers Syracuse in one semi final and AF will make Bingham's life miserable in the other.
Re: HS Fan | 2:46 p.m. Feb. 11, 2009
I agree with your assessment. Riverton will probably hammer anyone they face in the semifinal...but syracuse is not a given to make it there to face them.
re: HS Fan | 6:38 a.m. Feb. 12, 2009
I have watched both AF and Riverton a few times each also. Yes, Riverton is long and athletic. Are they 10 points better than AF? Well, they weren't 10 points better when these two teams played each other going into the Summer. When both teams seemed to have all their starters (AF actually was missing one starter and key bench players)... AF won by 4.

Also, AF has lost 5 games in the past two years. The widest point spread in any lost game has been 4 points (including two games against very good teams from AZ and CO). If Riverton does beat AF it won't be by more than 5.

Riverton creates problems for AF at several positions but I think AF has more overall skill & experience playing good teams. I expect AF vs Riverton in the Final ... a very good game ... and within 5 points.
sevier county | 10:50 a.m. Feb. 12, 2009
Im just glad there is no more blogs on here about Sevier County teams there were some ridiculous things they were saying on here. If they had to compete in tough region games night in and night out they would not have those records and ranked where they are at. They are in a cake region. They have small man syndrome. Let the kids do the talking and not you parents. Oh yea get rid of the mullets and the oakleys too.
Re: Sevier County | 11:27 a.m. Feb. 12, 2009
And what would your tough region be???? I hope you're not a 3A parent. Let's see South Sevier 18-2 with losses to 3A #1 and 2A #1 by a total of 6 points. Richfield 19-0 with uh...that would be NO losses. Both teams have beat ranked and other 3A and 4A teams.

Looks like our kids have already done the talking.

Also, they are girls, so we don't have small man syndrome. Makes me worry about those "Manly" teams you are taking about in a BIG region.

You, by chance, wouldn't be from East Germany...would you????

Re: Sevier County | 1:19 p.m. Feb. 12, 2009
My point exactly let the kids do the talking and you parents sit in the crowd and watch us play. Sevier County are the worst sports when you are losing and and the worst sports and think your the best when your are winning a few games. I think the parents get more into the game then the kids do there. I am really surprised you have coaches there because the parents there think they know more about the game then the coaches do. Have fun tonight. Richfield by 10
Game | 1:29 p.m. Feb. 12, 2009
The game tonight in Sevier county will be great. This is just a great setting and two great girls basketball teams. For anyone who has not seen either of these teams I would be not judging them with respect to them being just "2A" teams. They can and have competed with some great teams in the state. Many 3A and 4A coaches would not like to face either team in a playoff game. This is a preview of the upcoming state game I feel. Tonight even though the game is in Richfield I will be betting on a revenge factor and see South Sevier with the win.
over rated syracuse | 1:32 p.m. Feb. 12, 2009
syracuse is number 7 in state because they are a joke!!! and over rated, they lost back to back against layton and fremont!! any good team they play will not let a 14 year old freshman push them around!! and it showed when they stepped on the court against layton and at fremont!!!
re:Game | 4:52 p.m. Feb. 12, 2009
You shouldnt bet this Utah. Remember all the gambling they have stopped in the ring in Salt Lake and the horseracing down south.
Anonymous | 5:59 p.m. Feb. 12, 2009
riverton has the best player in state if she can step it up when playoffs come around noone can stop them! they are takin it this year.
Anonymous | 9:12 p.m. Feb. 12, 2009
Nice win Richfield. I just hope you can keep it going through the tournament.
AF is a great team, | 11:32 p.m. Feb. 12, 2009
Not unbeatable PG was ahead and if the 3s were not luckily going in they would have been upset. At State Tourney allthings change you can bring your mouth or your game. There is none this year that is going to run away on 5A
