Ahhhh. Basketball has begun. How quickly those Ute fans will shut their mouths, we are yet to find out. Going 0-6 agains the Cougs in bball and football for two years didn't do it, but either way it'll be nice to beat them yet again.

. . . too easy

Big Deal! I'm a BYU fan, but until they win a game in the NCAA tourney or by some miracle make it to the sweet 16, I'd rather the Deseret News not build up any BYU team whether it be football or basketball until BYU proves something on the national level instead of pounding MWC sub-par teams.

Utah is better! The Utes have a better RPI strength of schedule, and best TEAM!
re: Utah Man | 5:31 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
You are absolutely right, Utah is better at basketball and football. Why don't you just skip right to the NBA and the NFL with all of your talent and superiority and leave us unworthy college teams to flouder in mediocrity, and do it with some CLASS, something you will never be able to accomplish. Good luck in the Super Bowl and the NBA Championship game! What time is the parade? I am sure it will be nationally televised, like the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, right? I mean, you are THAT important!
To Utah's Best Team: | 5:45 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
Southern Baptist! Idaho State!

How can "the best TEAM" lost to such community colleges?
we will see utah man | 5:53 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
Keep talking big guy. Why don't you just go comment on the story about the utes losing to SDSU? The Utes will not win the MWC and they will not go to the NCAA tournament. If they are lucky they might beat BYU in Salt Lake but that is about the best you guys are gonna do this year.

Oh and please BYU just win a game in the tourney this year. Every year you get my hopes up and then choke. Oh wait you've already done it twice this year against Arizona State and Wake. I should probably just expect the same in the tourney.
We're That Good! | 5:52 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
Sugar Bowl Champs! Enought said!
Naven | 7:03 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
The most worrisome thing for the Utes has to be this guy Boylen. Does he have no common sense? The Ute game today though was no surprise to basketball fans. The Utes cannot beat a decent team on the road and will lose easy games from time to time at home as well.
McKay | 9:13 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
My fellow Cougar fans, please quit posting about the Utes on BYU articles. That's what Ute fans do, not the other way around, don't have the inferiority complex like most Ute fans do, it makes BYU fans like myself look bad.
Athletic | 9:24 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
BYU looks awfully athletic this year. I am not sure if they can get out of the first round or not, but they are fun to watch. Too bad Plaisted left early they could even be funner to watch.
Plaisted | 9:48 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
They actually play better without him. Don't miss him at all.
Nice job. | 11:25 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
Nice job Cougs. You're looking awfully tough to beat!
me too | 11:28 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
me going to say utah is bad team and play like me byu fan so nobody know me got such inferiority complexxxxxxxx!
Funny how quickly the Cougar | 12:25 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
fans return to their arrogance:) truth is most really don't care half as much about hoops as they do football, especially in Provo.

BYU and their fans only need the smallest opening and they will belittle everyone under the sun. The true trademark of a "church" school. Unfortunate for most of their members that BYU smacks of such arrogance.

Alas what do we remember of BYU's post season successes in any sport? BYU basketball, choke. BYU football, brag and then choke!!!

Great work Cougars you are so awesome and yes before you say it I will nice job in 1984:)

RE:Ahhhhhhh | 12:26 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
What are you doing?

:)
BYU is the epitomy | 12:29 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
of beating up on the little guys, choking against the big guns and then talking smack about it the rest of their lives.

Funny thing is you can tell how much they have to talk about because all the ammunition they seem to have is 1984 and before that Ainge.

BYU is awesome at belittling and taking down the small guy but if they have to "pick on someone" their own size (Wake, ASU) well we see what happens and yes of course their are always excuses but such is BYU . . . excuses, excuses, excuses.

Go Coogs:) hilarious.
Good | 1:22 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Good win for Cougs.
Solid win | 1:47 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
This was a good win for BYU. All around they had a solid team effort and seven players had 7+ points, so they were sharing the load.

BYU is going to need to continue to do that if they expect to win the MWC and eventually make some noise in March. Right now they are a good team, but to become great they need to continue to develop team chemistry.

I think the extent to which BYU can accomplish this will determine where they finish not only in the MWC, but in the NCAA tournament.
Continued improvement | 3:35 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Gavin is really getting better, along with the rest of the team. It's good to know that BYU really belongs in the group that includes Wake Forest and ASU. No excuses are necessary. Tavernari is right that it is just a matter of time before this team makes it into the top 25.
Re: BYU is the epitomy | 6:46 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Thanks for saying the #4 ranked team in the nation (Wake Forest) is equivilant to BYU ('their own size' in your words. Quite a compliment to the program.

BYU is not the most athletic or talented team in the nation, but Coach Rose gets the most out of what he's got. This leads to a lot of 'overacheiving' in the regular season, and some let-downs in big games against teams with deeper talent. I think the program is doing great and hope it will continue to build momentum.

Also, let's not count wins against Utah until they happen. BYU - Utah games tend to be dog-fights no matter who's got more talent or momentum, and I really don't think talent-wise, there's a huge gap between the two teams.
Utah fans | 7:55 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Just because you have a better "strength of schedule" doesn't make you the better team.

And, yes, BYU might not always beat the big boys, but the Utes beat the overrated "big boys" before choking to the smallest minnows possible.

Have fun in the CBI tourney or whatever it is called.
my diagnosis | 8:23 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Definition of utah fans: individual or individuals, male or female, who suffer from a chronic inferiority complex. Symptoms include, constant posting on Y articles, not understanding that respect comes when you respect, not because you demand it. Ending all sentences with, "I hate BYU". For example, "We just had an undefeated season and won the sugar bowl! Hah, take that BYU, you losers, we hate BYU." Not realizing that their Mormon fans and BYU's mormon fans... attend the same church! Not willing to admit the same year BYU played UNI they played WEBER STATE. Posting on blogs as Y fans (i.e. mr. la de freaking da...comment at 5:06pm). And finally (there's actually tons more) they enjoy BYU's misery more than they do their success!
Great win | 8:25 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Go Cougars! I'm glad to se that mr. "BYU is the Epitomy" agrees that our program is on the level of WAKE and ASU. We will continue picking on teams our own size and beat the little guys up, i.e. utah, csu etc.
From WA | 8:31 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Weekend wrap up:
BYU beat badly a team the whole league should beat. Nothing learned except solid bench play.

Utah went on the road and lost to a team they were not expected to beat. May have learned that Utah isn't going to whip the conference, but losing to a tough opponent on the road isn't a huge indictment of your team.

Road wins and home losses will tell you how good each team is, especially in conference play. Now back to the making of ridiculous claims by fans of both teams.
iflyhelo | 8:41 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
You people, on both sides, are unreal! Just sit back, enjoy the competition, the entertainment, the fun, and be grateful we have so many great athletes around us who give their time and talents to provide ENTERTAINMENT. This is NOT life or death, and these kids work very hard and give a great deal of their time to prepare for, and play the game they love. Give them credit for doing their very best, and enjoy the game as good fans. This isn't soccer in Italy.
Plaisted who? | 8:58 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Which country is he playing in???
Hawk | 9:27 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Cougs, don't spoil this blog with comments about that team up north. Nice game for the bench and great distribution of scoring. Hang in there.
Funny | 9:50 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
I think you all are hilarious. The sweeping generalizations about both the Utes and the Cougars make me laugh. Neither team has much to hang their hat on. Both Utah and BYU are small schools (sports program wise) that get great joy from being simply in the top five or winning a bowl game. Until either school does something relevant on the big stage it is all pointless. BYU has a national championship that was too long ago to be relevant, and the Utes have successfully played great and could have been the best team in the land but the system kept them irrelevant. Neither team has much to say.

BYU fans are no more arrogant than Ute fans. And Ute fans are not any more "blinded to fact" than BYU fans. Overall, people are about the same. The difference between BYU fans and Ute fans is that they go to different schools, that is about it.

People who think that one fan base is better than the other are imagining things. BYU gets excited when their team may not be that good. So does Utah. I remember a lot of Utes saying they would be great last year (UNLV-LOSE).
Incorrect Diagnosis | 10:27 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
I am a huge Cougar fan. But I continue to be amused by some of the comments from fellow Cougs. The Utes post on articles about BYU because that is the best way to "talk smack" - which is part of a fun, healthy rivalry. Why would they go talk smack somewhere Cougar fans are unlikely to read?

Also, why would someone feel inferior after they just ended up #2 in the nation in football and won their what - 9th straight bowl game. I'm proud of the Utes (their success helps make this a great rivalry), enjoy most of the smack talk, can only wish our Cougs were at their football level, and really don't think there is a whole lot of inferior feelings up on the Hill right now.

True story:

The last time BYU won a Tournament Game my wife just had our first baby. Now, that baby has just been accepted to BYU for fall enrollment.

She grew up watching BYU lose Tournament after Tournament. Please, BYU, win a game in the Tournament for her. She has never experienced the glory a Tournament victory brings.

Please win one for the Gipper.
The Shamwow Guy | 11:41 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Really, does any of this matter? Until BYU wins at least one Tourny game there is no reason to talk about BYU's basketball team. The only way to earn national respect is for BYU to win a Tourny Game. They haven't won a game in almost 20 years.

Also, BYU football must improve its dismal record of 1-21 against ranked teams in order to garner national respect and respect for the MWC. I'm sorry, but losing to Arizona really hurt the respect of the MWC.

Let's hope BYU can win against a ranked Oklahoma team and improve their record against ranked teams to 2-22.
It will be decided on the court | 12:34 p.m. Jan. 11, 2009
We can argue all we want about who is better (Utah was better than BYU in football this year so we can stop talking about that) in basketball but the teams will determine that on the court. Utah may have a better RPI but they are very inconsistent as they have been the last few years. BYU is playing great ball and I anticipate a great run this year. We can talk about who is better after the teams have played each other.
Re: Shawow dufus | 2:26 p.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Yes, because the only way to erase that tournament jinix is to get to the tournament. Which is something Utah will not do this year.
The Shamwow Guy | 3:39 p.m. Jan. 11, 2009
To: dufus,

Looks like I hit a nerve. I know it must be extremely difficult to have cheered for BYU for almost the last 20 years and not won a single Tournament Game. It must also be very embarassing.

Trust me, it is also very embarassing for the member teams of the MWC that BYU has done so poorly in the Tournament.

Did I also mention that the BYU football program is a shocking 1-21 against ranked teams? That is a horrible statistic for you to wear around your necks.

Until tomorrow, I must bid thee adieu.

Plaisted | 4:52 p.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Ooo come on. EVERYONE KNOWS the team would be ... even more amazing with Plaisted. MANY people are just bitter he left..that is why they make lame comments concerning the team/plaisted. He was a humble.. exciting.. team player... to watch. Wish him the best of luck.
re: Utah Man | 7:48 p.m. Jan. 11, 2009
2nd Place is the first loser.
re:The Shamwow Guy | 9:54 p.m. Jan. 11, 2009
So, anyway there pal.

What did you prove?

That your are in real life sort of a schmuck?

Point well taken.
MJB | 12:06 a.m. Jan. 12, 2009
I personally would take Miles over Plaisted in a second. Plaisted was good but he slowed down our offense with his one post move and was so needy that there wasn't enough ball time for other showcase players like tavernari and fredette. Miles works better in the system we currently have and he provides a bigger defensive presence than Plaisted.

USU Grad | 7:13 a.m. Jan. 12, 2009
It's funny how upset the BYU fans are getting. Your letting the Ute fans ruin your lives and give you added stress. If BYU is really superior in sports, than there is nothing to worry about. Just let it go. lol
Capital Cougar | 7:34 a.m. Jan. 12, 2009
I am going to love watching the Cougars smoke them Utes TWICE.

football smack | 9:32 a.m. Jan. 12, 2009
on a basketball article???

the epitome of a desparate fan...

is resorting to football smack when the subject is basketball

BYU is off to a good start in basketball; their only two losses, in the last minute, against two of the best teams in the country; no signature wins, but BYU did beat Utah State and soundly beat Idaho State.

A high RPI and an 18-win season will get a MWC team into...

You're a college grad and you write like that?

hints:

"your" is not the same as "you're" as in "you're letting"

use "if... then...", not "if... than"
John Lambert | 10:53 a.m. Jan. 12, 2009
I vow not to read any more articles about BYU basketball until they win a conference game.

There is no point to getting all excited about the season and then have them lose time after time, after time, after time, after time, (did I mention time after time?).

Good luck BYU. I really hope you can pull off a Tourny win. Until then, over and out good buddy!
John Lambert | 10:53 a.m. Jan. 12, 2009
I meant Tournament Game.
English Gal | 10:58 a.m. Jan. 12, 2009
To: re USU Grad,

If I were you, I would not lecture anyone about the proper use and grammar of the English language.

Everyone knows that you never end sentences with "that". That violates 3 rules of grammatical usage.

Also, you omitted several commas, which were necessary, in your "comment".

If I were your teacher, you would have received a D.

I Hope you didn't go to BYU. It would reflect poorly on that institution whose reputation has already been sullied by a dismal 1-21 record against ranked teams. lol
Grammar Fanatic | 2:12 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
the Cougars turned a close game into a laugher really fast.
What's a laughter?
Please run your stories through a spellcheck.

"Also, BYU football must improve its dismal record of 1-21 against ranked teams in order to garner national respect and respect for the MWC. I'm sorry, but losing to Arizona really hurt the respect of the MWC."
Mr. Shamwow--
BYU is NOT 1-21 against ranked teams in football. BYU has played way more than 22 games against ranked teams and has beat way more than 1 nationally ranked team. In 1996 alone, BYU beat 3 ranked teams (Texas A&M, Wyoming, and Kansas St). Way off on that stat...
Cosmo | 4:37 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
To 1-21,

Actually BYU is 1-21 in their last 21 games against ranked teams. If you go back further, I believe the statistic is something like 7-52 against ranked teams.

BYU should be a great team next year, and if we beat Oklahoma we will have a top 5 ranking right off the bat.
