utah is better than USC or Oklohoma or even Texas. Cmon let's get real here. Utah's schedule was still pretty soft compared the tough league play that the other schools are in. I don't even care about TCU or BYU because TCU got ran by OU and Arizona beat BYU. So It's really a joke. USC will beat anybody anytime. They lost by 1 bad quarter against OSU and their BCS championship hopes are doomed. PLEASE! WE need to get a better TV deal so all the east coast writersa and media can watch our games during the day on Saturdays.
AP poll vs USA coaches poll | 11:02 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
The coaches poll is always more credible.

I am amazed at the rude comments by some BYU fans on this posting. I honestly think they must know nothing about football. The BCS is one of the most corrupt organizations I have ever been witnessed to. Don't you BYU fans get it? They keep their favorites in while keeping everyone else out. And then they tell our coaches who they have to vote for. If money weren't involved, I would say it is only a travesty, but as it stands, I also believe it is illegal.

So you BYU fans who don't understand what is really going on here, keep yapping. For those football fans who get it, let's hope something is done so that ALL deserving teams have a shot.

Also, TCU and Boise should have both been playing new year's bowl games, instead of some of those sorry automatic bid teams.

I should have said, TCU and Boise should have both played in New Year's bowl games, in place of some of those sorry automatic bid teams.

Florida beat the system, but no one beat the Utes.
@ finally | 11:15 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Didn't florida get beat AT HOME to a team that lost 4 GAMES. They don't deserve it. The BCS is flawed. Utah is the champ.
Re: Second Fiddle | 12:07 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
You really put Utah State ahead of Utah in the state? Wow...never thought I'd see the day when byU fans would acknowledge their rightful spot...3rd best in state.
Who's to say? | 12:11 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Who's to say the Utes aren't the best. The did what they were asked to do, and thats all they can do. The system is truely flawed. Too much focus on who would beat who. The NY Giants were definitely not the best team in the NFL last year but everybody accepts them as the champs because they won when it mattered. It should be the same in this situation. In college every game mattered and the Utes won every game.

Utes should be champs. Regardless of who might or might-not beat them.
Utah 08 superior to BYU 84 | 12:18 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
The 2008 U of U football season is far superior to the 1984 BYU season regardless of the inaccurate system in place now, so keep on putting on your happy faces zoobies, history will always show the Utes in 08 were superior to your 84 byu team, and both the national and local perspective will be that UTAH in 08 was the best. You "questers" will never be able to win that arguement regardless of how hard you try! hahahahahaha, Quest for Perfection 2008 RED T-shirts on-sale forever!
Being Realistic | 12:15 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Even with all the arguments leaning towards Utah as number 1, the reality of the BCS system was never going to make that happen. The Big Boys are after all are the BCS power brokers, not the teams themselves.

If you looked keenly at all the BCS bowl games played on the field; quarter by quarter, snap by snap, you would be hard-pressed to say that Utah could not play with any of them. In fact, Utah most likely would have beaten the Oklahoma's, Texas', USCs Ohio and Penn State's, and with a flawless game plan, even Florida. Yes, Utah ran the table of games set before them to even get the consideration to the Big Boys Bowl. Don't downplay that. They had to. But their performance against a Big Boy team once they got there was truly impressive.

In all the BCS Bowls played, most of the teams pretty much stuck to what had gotten them there. Coach Whittinghams and the OC & DCs masterful game plan against Alabama was out-of-the-box, and executed precisely. Could anyone say Utah couldnt do the same against Florida, Oklahoma, or USC?

Given this reality, I think #2 is great, all things considered!

byu fans just get out of here seriously, "hey we wont the nc in '84!" so freakin what, we wont the nc in basketball in '44, but nobody cares!, byu cant claim 2 bcs bowl games! and in fact the bcs was put in place because of '84! byu if i were you i would keep my mouth shut! because your team is headed in the wrong direction, you honestly think you guys will win championships with slow white guys from utah? think again. plus your best recieve collie is now gone, who you gunna have max hall throw too? oh wait, the utah defense! hey hall i hear Kruger is still open! oh yeah and way to choke against wake in basketball, it really was a white out haha. now stop being jelous that utah is 13-0 and would beat anybody they played even the detroit lions, which isnt much but still. 13-0, #2, should be #1, 2 bcs bowls in 5 years. and more to come! GO UTES!
Utah vs USC | 1:31 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Why do some of you think USC is better than the Utes?

Utah had a better record
Utah beat Oregon State. Oregon State beat USC
Utah beat #4 team by 14. USC beat #8 by 14 - at home
Utah beat #6 Bama, #7 TCU, #18 OSU, #25 BYU

Utah gets knocked for a weak schedule, but keep in mind USC played some softies, too, like UCLA, Washington State, Washington, Stanford, etc.
SEC WINS AGAIN | 2:12 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
To: the utah utes and members of the MWC.
I understand that Utah is upset because the Utes are not voted #1 in the BCS. There is one main reason for this. Utah nor the MWC is not apart of the BCS sytem so how can Utah be voted as the BCS Championship, it can't. Utah can claim since they are the only unbeaten team they deserve to be #1. WRONG. Florida and Oklahoma won their conference championship games for the right to play for the BCS championship. UTAH did not. This is what happens when you want to be a "BCS BUSTER" rather than join the BCS. So please stop whining and wanting others to HAND you the #1 spot when you don't deserve it. MWC needs to get better teams in that conference and do what it takes. Or go independent like Notre Dame.
Re: No one thinks | 2:15 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
No one thinks Utah is better than USC, Texas, or Oklahoma? I think they're better than them all.

USC's schedule was pretty soft (Wazzu, 0-12 UW, UCLA) and they beat a Penn State team that played their worst game of the year - by 14 at home

Texas was outplayed by #10 Ohio State and if not for a generous spot on 4th down and one lucky play, would have had two losses and probably ranked 10th.

Oklahoma has 2 losses - 'nuff said

Florida is the only team I think who could hang with Utah this year and even they beat Bama by a smaller margin than the Utes.
RE:Utah 08 superior to BYU 84 | 2:30 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
You're forgetting 1 very important fact...the '84 National Championship trophy is WAY bigger than the '09 Sugar Bowl trophy!
SEC WINS AGAIN | 2:37 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
"This is what happens when you want to be a "BCS BUSTER" rather than join the BCS."

Do you really think that Utah WANTS to be the BCS Busters? Utah HAS to be the BCS Busters because the BCS WILL NOT LET THE MTN WEST INTO THE BCS AS AN AUTOMATIC BID.

Utah is not the BCS busters Utah will be the BCS destroyers. All the attention the Utes have gotten for busting it twice will play a big hand in the change of the BCS. Its inevitable thanks to congress stepping in, the system has to be changed by 2011 or they cant actually call the winning team the national champions.
Dumb Fans | 2:56 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Fans who try to tear down what Utah accomplished this year are just as stupid as fans who try to minimize what BYU accomplished in 1984.

Any reasonable, objective fan who did a little research would come to the conclusion that both teams deserved much more credit for what they accomplished than the biased talking heads and clueless fans are willing to give them credit for.

Congratulations Utah on a great season! #2 and a legitimate shot at #1 was well deserved.

Maybe some of you will now have a little better understanding of the media and fan bias that BYU's fans and team experienced from 1979 to 1984, in 1996, and again in 2001.

Been there, done that.

Ignore the kids and 12-year-old "grown-ups".

True, long-time BYU fans understand and sympathize with Utah's frustration for not being fully rewarded for what the Utes accomplished.
Reality | 3:18 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
It's all a beauty pageant anyway. The Utes had a perfect season, but didn't have the fashion. "FBS" College Football National Championships, AP and BC$, are a joke so don't get too offended if you weren't crowned the "National Champs" because it really doesn't mean anything. Until the "National Championship" is determined by a teams record or playoff, it really has no merit.

Congrats on the Mountain West Conference Championship and an undefeated season, Utes.
please explain | 3:41 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
I love coach whittingham and think he's even a better coach than Urban Meyer and clearly the best defensive coach in all of college football, but I want to ask him one thing.

Why did he vote the Utes at number 5 in the poll used for the final BCS rankings? That's the vote that determined who played in the national championship game. Was he afraid they weren't number 1 then? At the time, only Utah and Boise State were undefeated. Was he not ready to stand up for his players then? I'm confused.
DennyG | 3:45 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Utah beat a BYU team that was sliding badly. TCU took a lot of life out of them, Utah took the rest. By the end of the season they were a mess.
Looking back at the season by the time they played the Y, the Y was probably one of the weakest teams on their schedule.
I don't want it both ways, I just want BYU to lose every game, in every sport they play. Men, women and children. It's all that simple
JohnTheLion | 4:24 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Does anyone else find it ridiculous that the Utes are still being judged on potential match-ups? So what if we'd fall to the men of Troy. Big deal if we couldn't match up against the gators. Fact of the matter is, the season is over. And teams should be ranked according to what they accomplished during the season. Last time i checked there's only one team out there that can take claim to a 13 win 0 loss season. And by that simple math, no ridiculous formulas involved, there is only one clear "national champion" and they hail from utah...
JohnTheLion | 4:33 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
And for anyone who thinks that the computers, the formulas, and all the strength of schedule crap is what matters, consider this. In the six polls the BCS uses to rank teams, Utah averaged first after earning the top spot in four out of the six. If you ask me, thats a slap in ths BCS's face...

A quote came to mind as I was reading your post:

"Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference." ~Mark Twain

Hence, I'll refrain from posting a rebuttal.

You have got to start thinking through this. A playoff is not the answer. Every coach will tell you that any team can beat any other team on any given day. With a playoff, you don't get the best teams in the championship game. The best team may have one off night and lose out. The BSC ranking system takes the off nights into account and uses record, strength of schedule, strength of conference, and other numbers to determine who will be in the championship game. That is much more reliable than a playoff where flukes and luck can make a bad team the champion!
