Funny observation...So many posters (ute fans) here keep bringing up the BYU struggles of '08 and how they are definitely going to continue and will determine the outcome of '09. HOW RIDICULOUS!!! Tell me...how many times has it happened where a team struggles one year, but than turns things around the following season? We all know there are several instances, but let me focus on one recent occurrence. BYU in 2005 finished a mediocre 6-6 (not nearly as good as this year) had a pretty bad defense (finished 93rd in total defense, not nearly as bad as this year) had problems on turnovers but still managed to achieve +2 in the turnover margin (the same as this year). Who can tell me what happened in '06? Total D finished ranked 38th, turnover margin was +14 (4th best in the nation) 11-2 overall record finishing with a 10 game win streak and an impressive victory in their bowl game. So what happened, why didn't their struggles continue from '05 to '06? There wasn't much change in personnel, so how did they do that? Don't be caught up in this ridiculous idea that what happens one year will reflect next year's success.

Nice discovery by the reply above me about the horn hookin'...classic! Isn't OU playing for the NC today, so how are they #2 in the Big 12. Ute logic I tell ya... Who cares what any idiotic BYU hater says, to be invited to such a game is a huge honor. They could have chosen 'Bama, LSU, West Virginia, or even UCLA, but nope, they chose a MWC team! As a big BYU fan, I'll admit that with or without Bradford, BYU will need short of a miracle to beat these guys. BYU does do very well with a senior QB.
Scott | 8:02 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
BYU defensive line and line backers are too slow. Oklahoma will devour them. FSU will give BYU the same problem, FSU has team speed on defense, Cougars simply do not. BYU offensive line is too slow also. TCU, UTah and others proved that - they couldn't keep pressure off Hall. When Hall gets pressured, he is mediocre. BYU needs a more athletic offensive line.
The Shamwow Guy | 8:10 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Did I mention that BYU is 1-21 against top 25 ranked teams. Did I also mention that BYU hasn't won a Tournament Game in almost 20 years.
Clarence | 8:50 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I hope BYU clobbers Oklahoma, but with a record of 1-21 against ranked teams, I'm not too optimistic about their chances. Oh well, maybe BYU can have a Quest for Perfection starting in 2011.
The Shamwow Guy... | 8:53 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
is a sham!

Did I mention that the shamwow guy couldn't play waterboy on the BYU Women's lacrosse team.

Did I mention that Utah got shutout by 2-10 UNLV?

Did I mention that Utah lost, AT HOME, to Division II SW Baptist?
Dear Ute Fans | 8:56 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I could never imagine myself going on a Ute story with the intent of demeaning the U for something that is an honor.

What is your mental malfunctions?

Can you kids get a life?
the difference | 9:24 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
BYU can start preping for OU today and keep it's prospective Pros IE Unga, Collie, Pitta While OU will lose it's and will be thinking ahead if not completely at least some. I can only guess what could happen with a wide open spread offense of Pitta, Collie, Unga, Jacobson, & George. It makes you a bit tingly to think of it. fix the defense a lit bit and voila! ou's 60 won't be enough. lol
AZ Ute | 9:27 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Congratulations on getting this big game set up. I want to wish the Cougs luck...they will need it. As long as you can get Max Hall get and keep his head in the game you might have a SLIM chance. This will be a great game for the MWC.

Good Luck.

GO UTES!!!
The Shamwow Guy | 9:32 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Nothing you can say will change the fact that BYU is 1-21 against ranked teams. That is a very embarrasing and shameful statistic to have to carry around your neck.

Also, did I mention that the BYU Basketball team hasn't won a Tournament Game in almost 20 years? Ouchy for you. That is really embarassing.

The Shamwow Guy must bid thee adieu.
re: Dear Ute Fans | 9:31 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Apparently your fellow Cougars don't share your sentiment, try reading any Ute Sugar Bowl story in this paper, and the demeaning comments from Cougars are plentiful.
So shamwow | 9:47 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
How many times are you going to post the same comment?
Shamwow is unfortunately right | 9:58 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
BYU has been fantastic over the years with what is virtually an LDS all-star team. But it simply is not enough against top competition. In the past, it was rare that top competition was found in-conference which is why the Cougs always dominated. But Utah and TCU will both be top 15 again next season along with Oklahoma and FSU. I wish I could say otherwise but there is simply nothing I can point to that makes me think BYU can beat any of those four teams. They may pull one out given that three are at LES. I love the Cougs and they will be a top 25 caliber team - but very well may still finish with 3 or 4 losses. IF Teo falls into our laps AND the new o-line gells quickly and shows better speed and athleticism than last season's line - that just may be enough to produce some upsets against those four teams. But with virtually a brand new line and the same players returning from last season (as talented as they are) we just won't be able to match the speed and athleticism of OK, FSU, TCU and Utah.
Shame on U shamguy | 10:10 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
You shame yourself with your stupid comments.

There's no shame in losing to very good teams -- ranked college football/basketball teams and NCAA tournament teams.

The same can't be said about losing to bad teams with losing records or teams that didn't even make the NCAA tournament.
Crimson Club | 10:30 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
To Shame on U,

Sounds like the truth hurts (and is also making you upset).
re: unfortunately right? | 10:29 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
No. Fortunately, wrong!

Turnovers were the deciding factor against Utah, TCU and Arizona.

The same thing that doomed TCU at Oklahoma.

BYU's defense was shaky this season, but BYU has the same type of athletes today as BYU had when they dominated #1-ranked, defending national champion Miami; I was at the game and it was not as close as the final score 28-21.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see BYU finish 11-2 or even 12-1 next season.

Sorry, didn't see em in the same numbers, or with the same hate. and none came from me-- or my "fellow Cougars" because I'm not a cougar fan... just college football.

And still I don't understand the U of U hate. I don't see the obsession of hate this bad 9 months before the game anywhere else in the country.

Do you see it.
to:For Cougar Fans... | 1:27 a.m | 10:56 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
What is that?

No, really , what "is" that?

Your hate goes so deep you are up at 1:27 AM writing hate poems against BYU.

You seem a bit obsessed...
re:crim club | 11:04 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Sound you want to project things on the shame on U guy that don't really appear.

How do you deal with your unresolved pain?
Zelph, the Sport Guru | 11:31 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
BYU is 1-21 against ranked teams. End of discussion.

BYU Basketball hasn't won a single Tournament Game in almost 20 years.

If I was a BYU fan I would scurry away and hide from the light until my team won a Tournament Game or beat a ranked team in football. Oohh the pain!
Further to Re: Dear Ute Fans | 11:31 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
On top of going on Ute articles and blathering, many Cougar fans invite a response from us Ute fans by resorting to that horrid "we're BYU, so we're better than the heathens on the hill" attitude.

In this case, it's been comments along the lines of "ya Utah, you got lucky and beat us because our fabulous Maxie had a bad day and gave you the game, and then you got lucky and beat Alabama because they didn't have all their linemen. But now we've just scheduled OU and we're going to knock their socks off, and that absolutely PROVES that the Y has a better football program than the U."

So in response to your plea to "get a life," I would say a) I have one, thank you, but I also have a football rivalry that is as vibrant as it's ever been; b) recognize that some on BOTH sides of the rivalry can get carried away (Jorgensen's comments after 11/22 were very astute on that point), but that doesn't mean we all do; c) Don't paint us all with the same brush; and d) have fun with it and don't be so fetchin' thin-skinned!
yeah | 11:50 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
It's about freakin time we got rid of the Pac-10 on our schedules, and the reffing will be fair because the Big 12, Wac and MWC all use the same refs.
Bleed Red | 12:01 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Props to the Cougs for scheduling such a fine game against quality opponents...quite surprising actually! Hopefully TDS brings their A game and spanks the Oklahoma Puuners and redeems themselves and the MWC for their horrible showing in the Veg Bowl. Good luck Cougs! I want you to win this game but I still hate you and we will beat you in LESs this year!

Go Utes!!!!
re: further | 12:18 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Nine months until the game. No one knows who will be playing, starting for either team.

Forget about the BYU Utah game rivalry banter, that's expected, that includes fans from both schools. That's fine. But this game DOES NOT INCLUDE THE UTES.

Utah won the Sugar Bowl and BYU fans were very gracious in supporting the team from the state, the conference vs the BCS and Bama.

This is the same type scenario, and the same lame posts are being drug out and repeated.

BYU is representing the MWC, why not realize that a good showing for BYU helps anyteam in the MWC. Everyone in conference is bragging on BYU vs. PAC 10, but it takes everyone.

So, getting your life a)congrats on your life (Why-such-a-large-part-of-it-BYU?) This is not about the rivalry (Utah-isn't-playing). b.)realized, but 9 months beore a game that does not include utah... what's with that? c.)I'm painting the haters, and d.)not thin skinned, just thinking a team that just beat Bama in the Sugar Bowl should be more interested in where their AP ranking comes in, and feel they can finally stand on their own two feet, and stop the stupid hating. comparing for a bit.

RE: Oklamoma vs BYU in Dallas | 12:49 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
What is a Ute Fan? Anyone who bleeds red winning or losing.

What do they stand for? They stand for whatever they individually choose to stand for...

Which is more important to Ute Fans, Utah or BYU? Is this really a question, stop giving yourself back pats poogar!

Why can't they look at an article about BYU and say good for them? I did say that, I would love for the MW to represent in Dallas.

Why does good news about BYU make a Utah Fans blood boil? HHHMMMMMM Rivaly, maybe. Do you think its any different with any other rivalries?

When will Utah be able to stand and walk by themselves? Typical Yner back patting... grow up you fools!
To Ute Fans | 12:50 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Congratulations on your recent success which corresponds to your defensive coordinator and now head coach who played for BYU, was educated at BYU and was taught a winning tradition at (you guessed it) BYU!

You're Welcome!
Utah fans vs BYU haters | 1:25 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
To the Utah fans: Congratulations on a great season and national championship.

To the BYU haters: Get lost! You don't even have a team to root for.

To "in Dallas | 12:49 p.m.": Name calling? Next, I suppose, you'll be sticking out your tongue at BYU fans. Are you 12-years-old or what? If not, stop acting like a bratty little 12-year-old and grow up.
Re: Utah fans vs. BYU haters | 3:38 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Amen!

I have friends who are Ute Fans and acquaintances who are BYU Haters. I enjoy the rivalry with the Ute Fans and ignore the BYU Haters.

Don't spend too much time responding to BYU Haters because you know what they say about wrestling with pigs.
To: To Ute Fans 12:50 | 3:41 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Yes, thanks for sending us Coach Whit who played for BYU, was educated at BYU, was taught a winning tradition at BYU... and wouldn't go back to BYU when he had the chance!

You can ask him, and he'll say he's a Utah Man now. (Isn't repentance a be-Ute-iful thing?!)

But hey, to soothe the passions of you Cougar fans getting all defensive about having us Utes post comments on "your" article, good luck in September!
2009 Fireside Schedule | 5:59 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I'm so excited the BYU Fireside team has announced the schedule for 2009!

If BYU belonged in this game vs OK then it wouldn't be a big deal to be invited. However, it is a big deal that BYU was selected because we really don't belong based on recent performances.

We just got creamed by Arizona for crying out loud! We only beat one team in 2008 with a winning record. How pathetic is that.

We've never lost a fireside!

dont know if you have been notified that multiple sources have rported stud austin collie will declare for the nfl draft, sad but good at the same time.

re:to byu fans | 9:09 p.m. | 9:43 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Oh, Man, ruined my night.

Is that what you were looking for?

BYU will put out their best 11, and we'll see what happens.

OK?
Ed Clinch | 10:09 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
With a largely new offensive line, BYU must play the best be the best, and win or lose, the exposure is a great thing.

How about a motto for 2009?

Fulfill the Mission.

Sooner than Later.

Quest for Perfection II.

We can do it.

Yes we can!

Beat Tulane and Utah and All is Well, All is Well.

Go Cougars!
CougarKeith | 10:00 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
The Last I knew you couldn't enter the NFL draft until your Junior Year of College was completed! So Bradford will NOT be in the NFL next year! Secondly BYU beat #1 Miami a few years back, and if I remember it's almost a tradition to beat top 10 teams for BYU. Why all the glum comments? I think BYU will have a great team next season, I think Chambers and Jacobson and Pitta are going to be great targets for Hall, and I think Hall is going to be beyond fantastic next season! I think we are going to have a great defense, and I think if our new Offensive line comes together, we'll be just fine! As usual my concern will be our defensive backfield, will it improve? Can we get some better coaching, or better athletes PLEASE! Can we come together like we did against UCLA and this time not look like something is missing once we beat Oklahoma? Can we do that next year, PLEASE! I know we can do it, I know we have the ability, I mean, Oklahoma, Florida State, Utah, TCU, 4 reasons to be a BCS buster next season! Let's Do It!
Reality | 4:43 p.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Assuming BYU can beat Oklahoma, their record against ranked teams will then be 2-22.

Shameful. Why can't BYU beat ranked teams? Is it recruiting, the honor code, speed, size or what?

Just curious.
TO: Az dave | 9:45 p.m. Jan. 18, 2009
What is the bsc i have never heard of it?
TO: Reality | 10:02 p.m. Jan. 18, 2009
i thought that we were talking about football but anyway when is the last time that utah has beaten BYU in basketball it has to of been a couple of years and did utah even get consideration to get in the tournament last year!!!
