Didnt see much Utah coverage this year, so wasn't sure what to expect, but thought Alabama was beatable. These posts claiming Utah couldn't go .500 in the SEC just aren't looking closely. The SECs clearly a strong conference, and Utah dominated their 2nd best team. There are lots of perennially pathetic schools in the BCS, and every year some big names are also down. Alabamas a good team, but these programs arent in another world, even with the deck stacked in their favor.
Im 100% in favor of Utah hanging a NC banner, but Im sure they wouldnt want to make it a target of ridicule (look at the lightning rod that is BYU 84). But Id love to see them take a stand.
However, the BCS won't go away because of controversy (theres one every year). It needs to be seen as *illegitimate*. Hard to argue Purdue should get $millions because of PSU and OSU, while Fresno gets nothing because Boises left out (ranked higher than OSU and with 2 fewer losses).
GO....UTES
Utah, the only team to go undefeated twice in the BCS era and never win a national championship.
national championships in football:
BYU 1
Utah 0
This record will stand forever.
No Mtn West team will ever EVER win the national championship.
Get used to it.
BYU will always have more football national championships than the U. Never gonna change.
Utah gets excellent LDS athletes at positions they match up well for. For the others, they get quality players that make this a complete team. It is interesting to note that 3 of BYUs best quarterbacks were nonmembers (McMahon, Sarkiesian, Detmer). Apparantly they wouldnt make the cut under todays guidelines.
Utah clearly has the stronger football program. Even still, remember that they got the chance to prove it by the slimest of margins (a missed field goal by the other team). Otherwise, all they would have been able to do is go to the Las Vegas bowl as BYU did two years in a row.
BYU fans should give due credit to Utah coaches and players. They are serious about football and have done it right.
If not for the certain percentage of fanatical anti Mormon fans, they would be even more popular. Utah loves winners.
Final comment, Utah all but one the game on the questionable face mask call that gave the ball back to Florida and cost Alabama the game. The Tide was a shell of a team compared to the team that played Florida.
It was a great year Mike, but good grief, you should be better than frenzy writing.
BTW, to all you 1984 haters, the AP and UPI and several other trophies are still on display in Provo. Bad mouth all you want, but stop by and see the trophies sometime. If you go back and research the final polls in 84, only Hugh Hefner's mag didn't vote BYU #1.
Perhaps the pro draft count is more impressive, like 2004 several players started long term NFL careers the following season.
If I had to compare Tiger Woods to Chi Chi Rodriguez, I would look at how many championships each has won, not that once he had a real good tournament. Bill Russell loved to show off his rings, not pictures of one night they beat the Lakers. It's about the ring, the trophy, the banner that hangs in the gym.
Utah beat Bama 31-17 = 14 points
AFA 30-23 = 7 points
Weber State 37 - 21 = 16 points
OSU 13-10 = 3 points
New Mexico 13-10 = 3 points. If that's the case, AFA, OSU, NM are all significantly better than Alabama.
Utah beat Weber by 2 more points, AFA by 7 less, OSU and New Mexico by 11 fewer points than the BAMA GAME.
Then you write a story that opens "We just witnessed the greatest season in the state's football history, yes, even better than the 2004 12-0 Utah season or the 13-0 BYU season of 1984."
The National Enquirer needs people like you...
Urban said the 2004 team would have beaten anybody.
But I'm certain a combination of the 2004 and 2008 Utah teams could have throttled this year's Detroit Lions team.
I am glad BYU has the 1984 championship. Good for them.
I am glad Utah has the 2004 Fiesta Bowl Championship . . . just would like to have played a really good team.
I am REALLY glad Utah has the 2009 Sugar Bowl Championship by playing very strong against a formidable opponent (Alabama).
Next year, I will be cheering for every MWC team, especially BYU and Utah. If BYU and Utah both do well, then the November game is so much more fun to watch. There may be a very good rivalry building between Utah/BYU/TCU as well, which could be a lot of fun.
I am too old and life if too short to spend your time hating teams and fans. As many have adequately demonstrated here, BYU and Utah both have the few ignorant fans, but for the most part, we all enjoy some good-natured ribbing and a great rivalry.
This Utes team would kill Texas and everyone in the country knows it. And I'd put big money on them to beat FL or OK. The AP voters should stick it to the BCS and award the best team in the nation -- the UTES -- with a most-deserved national championship.
Besides focusing on the distant past, this is the equivalent of saying "neener, neener neener, I have brown eyes, and you never will." Taunting someone for something beyond their control is the epitome of childish logic. The Utes have molded themselves into a chiseled, well-conditioned athlete, who just set a world record in a demanding race - excelling in everything under their control - but the "you'll never have brown eyes" taunt continues.
Such an accusation says much more about the intellectual capacity, maturity and character of the accuser than the ability, status or talent of the accused.
The article compared '08 Utah to all other football teams in the state, including '84 BYU, as did the commentors. By saying '08 Utah was best, this implies any BYU team was not as good, but this is hardly BYU bashing. Thanks to Mr. Sorenson for an interesting read that spawned extensive discussion.
"doing this every 4 years is better than having a 10-win season od mediocrity every year."
10 win seasons are mediocre???
You don't follow college football, do you?
With 2 BCS victories in five years Utah has achieved a higher plane now. (Don't believe it? If you were a high school football player in the last five years, you had a better chance to go to and win a BCS game at Utah, than Penn State or Alabama or about 10 other 'powerhouse' teams.)
Maybe BYU will eventually make to a BCS game, maybe they won't. Maybe they'll finally win more than 2 bowl games in row maybe they won't. Maybe they'll manage to actually beat a ranked team for the first time in 10 years, maybe they won't. Whatever happens with BYU, I don't care.
BYU's a rival, no doubt about it. But with this post I'm officially past thinking about the BYU football team except in the third week in November.
Good luck, Cougars. Especially with the firesides.

...But this loyal Ute will no longer measure the football teams' success against BYU's success (real or imagined)."
Then why do you continue to still compare Utah against BYU?
Are old habits that hard to break?
yeah u guys are sure pretty cool for beating a 4-6 New Mexico team 13-10, that BYU beat 21-3. woo hoo! (You bring history, I bring this season).
Why the need to fight so hard to compare against BYU? This Utah Team had a GREAT Bowl Game, but all season long were inconsistent, mediocre at times.
They do not deserve a NC, something BYU has.
Yes, we barely beat TCU, but hey, we beat them and BYU didn't (and it wasn't even close). So if that makes you Coug fans feel better to denigrate the quality of our 13 wins, have at it. But we still won more games than you, and we won the big games to boot, and that's something at which Bronco has been "inconsistent, mediocre at times" as well.
AFA 30-23 = 7 points
Weber State 37 - 21 = 16 points
OSU 13-10 = 3 points
New Mexico 13-10 = 3 points.
BYU beat AFA 38-24 = 14 points
UNM 21-3 = 18 points
BYU has gone 11-2, 11-2, 12-3.
What has Utah done? Oh, thats right, they have been "Inconsistent & mediocre" the past 2 years. I guess it's like Tommy Lasorda said -- "it's not how, it's how many."
Oh, and great game in the Sugar Bowl.
I tend to believe that the Utes went in with so much National lack of respect becase the past two years have been so "Inconsistent & mediocre". and even in many of the games you won this year, Utah was so "Inconsistent & mediocre"...
But once again, great Sugar Bowl.
"BIG BAMA FAN | 7:02 a.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Just wanted to tell all the Ute fans ya'll show a lot of class, and Utah played a GREAT GAME. I was really impressed with the Utes. Hope to see u guys in another bowl game or a home and home game. Good luck, you deserve the AP NC. I will be watching this site and looking next season to see how the Utes are doing."
Yep, I sure the guy from Bama was was so impressed with "u" guys. I sure he really cares if Utah wins the AP NC.
So what if Utah went 13-0? they don't deserve a national chamionship or even a share of it. They beat on teams like wyoming colorado UNLV Weber state Utah State and Michigan. They barely pulled out wins against ranked opponents oregon state and TCU. Alabama and BYU were good wins. Deffinatly not the BEST team in the NATION, something that is a requirement for a national championship. (something BYU has)
Unfortunately, you're missing my point. My point was, regardless of the comparative margins of victory and the white-knuckle 4th quarters we endured, at the end of the day, THE U STILL FINISHED 13-0!! We've done it twice in the last 5 years, and won both BCS games we've been invited to!
Exactly what has BYU gotten by going a consistent 11-2, 11-2 and 10-3? Consecutive trips to Vegas - way to go. The rest of the MWC thanks BYU for their contributions to their football programs. What's that, the Vegas Bowl doesn't generate any payouts for the other teams? Oops - my bad!
If I were BYU, I'd be less concerned about how many offensive starters return than how many defensive starters are back. I'm not sure I'd want any of those guys back, other than Jorgensen and Nixon maybe. Too bad Nixon's a senior.
Utah may not be the "best" team in the nation, but we ARE the only UNDEFEATED team in the nation, and we now have two BCS bowl wins, something BYU does not have, and wishes desperately that they did. 1984 was long enough ago that few Ute fans are jealous of that accomplishment for BYU. Can you BYU fans say the same about our BCS record? Doubt it.
The writer forgets BYU's amazing years when they manhandled nearly every team. Sorry, but some of those one loss years were better than this Utah team. You can scroll back to other games, even the Weber game, when Ute fans were grumbling about their team and how bad they looked. Sorry, but I won't allow MANY lucky breaks to convince me this is the best team Utah has ever seen.
