"But for a few lucky plays, Utah would have beaten BYU 7 in a row, instead of 5 out of 7."

The same logic can be applied to Utah in 2008: You realize of course that, but for a few lucky plays, Utah would have lost to TCU, AFA, and OSU this year. The Ute response has been: we found a way to win. That is all that matters! The same applies to your comment.

"You had a nice run a few decades ago. Have fun continuing to be mediocre."

Wow, so I heard this in 198xx whenever Fassel took over, then again when McBride took over, after Crowton's disastrous seasons, etc. Utes have been pronouncing the demise of BYU's program repeatedly over the years. I have confidence that your declaration will be just as accurate as your predecessors'.

"Utah out of sight, out of mind" by Dan Wetzel:
...Even by the absurd standards of the BCS, having voters not bother to watch an undefeated team play a single game is a new low...
...The coaches and Harris polls make up two-thirds of the BCS rankings. The average of six computer formulas is the other third.
Frustration with the BCS is often pointed at those faceless computers. Its the human opinion polls, however, that are most subject to bias, laziness or disinterest
The computers cant help but plug in Utahs info. One of them even had the Utes ranked No. 2.

The 61 voters in the coaches poll and 114 in the Harris werent as kind. They often voted on what they thought Utah might be, not what they saw Utah actually was. In a testament to copy-cat voting, almost everyone had the Utes between No. 7 and No. 10 in the polls.

Bottom line is, I'm a die-hard Cougar fan, and as anti-Utah as they come. I have to VERY grudgingly (hey, I bleed blue) acknowledge Utah deserves the national championship, or at the very least, to play for it. The plus one (championship after all the bowl games & BCS championship game) model would be a great start (8-16 team playoff would ultimately be best), can you imagine Utah vs. Florida, Oklahoma, or USC? As far as BYU's demise mentioned by some on this thread, that's a bit premature for a team that's won two of the last three MWC titles, and run the MWC table two years in a row (get back to me when you've done that, Utes :)!!! ). But again, bottom line, congratulations, you're the best THIS year, and you deserve to be National Champions. You pummeled an excellent team and went undefeated, things that are very hard to do.

ive been reading this blog throught the past season and i gotta tell ya, the state of utah had a great year for football, and not just because of my utes and the cougs down in provo, look at snow, and weber, and our high school teams are destroying out of state teams as well, but i gotta thank the realistic cougar fans who actually learned sumthing at byu and that is respect, you guys have respected the utes this season and thanks for not being arrogent and anoying like most rival fans are. i wish byu the best of luck next season, please represent the church well, and not just the school. But GO UTES! i couldnt be more happy with them, we finally shut those southern football punks up, we beat up on teams from 3 "power" conferences this season and showed them that football is football wheather in the MWC or in the SEC. GO UTES!!!!

As a lifetime Cougar fan and member of the Cougar Club...I bleed blue. But the other night I was whistling "Utah Man!" Congrats Coach Whitt and the Utes, that was a fantastic performance.

I was at BYU in 1984 and agree with the Governor's assertion--Utah's '08 team is better, though that takes nothing away from the Bosco-led squad.

With the Ohio State fiasco last night the Utes chances of winning the national title died nationally, but in my heart and mind they are the #1 team in the nation.

Well Done Utes!

If Florida beats Oklahoma on Thursday, the Gators would have defeated teams ranked (on the day of the game) Nos. 1, 1, 4, 6, 20 and 25. It would take Utah two centuries to match that.

Its funny how the same Yute fans than cry fowl regarding BYU's National Championship (something the Yutes will never have)are now claiming they are #1. The Cougs were 13-0 that year so to think that your team is any different your smoking something. Don't get me wrong you had a good year and you got the job done this year. Just don't be hypocritical

The fact of the matter is that we will never know if the Utes were the best team in Divion IA in 08/09 just as we will never know if the winner of the FL/OK game is the best team. All we have is the collective opinions of a biased system and a biased few that select a champion from a privelged sub-set of teams. Until we have a playoff the NC is just a sham!

In my opinion, the best post on this entire blog came from utahmanami, "When the final history of the BCS is written, it will be noted that the BCS came to be largely because of what BYU did in 1984 and ended, at least in part, because of what the University of Utah did in 2009." I would like to add that Bosie State made a strong statement as well.

The best way to bring down the BCS is for the non-BCS teams to keep WINNING and WINNING and WINNING.
Utah - the logical choice | 12:07 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Starting with the pre-bowl rankings, and by process of elimination ...

#1 Oklahoma vs #2 Florida - the loser has 2 losses and can't be in the top 5. The winner still has 1 loss and should be tied w/Utah at #1

#3 Texas - barely beat #10, has a loss, and beat same number of top 25 teams as Utah (4). They should not be ranked above #4.

#4 Alabama - we already know what happened to them

#5 USC - beat #8, but no worse than Utah beat #4. USC has one loss, to Oregon State, who Utah beat. Should not be ranked higher than Utah.

#6 Utah - the only undefeated team in division 1, beat 4 Top 25 teams, including a decisive win over #4 Alabama. Should at least get a share of #1 ranking.
The Greek | 12:10 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
How I'd rank 'em:

1) Tie - Utah and OU/UF winner
3) USC
4) Texas
5) OU/UF loser

LEAVE THE BCS FOR BIG TEAMS LIKE THE BIG 12. GOT LOTS OF CHEESE FOR ALL YOU WHINERS. BOTTOM LINE WHEN THE BCS GOT STARTED THE PEOPLE IN CONFERENCES WERE NOT INCLUDED SHOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING THEN. DONT WAIT FOR YOUR TEAM TO GO UNDEFEATED TILL ALL OF THE SUDDEN HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE SYSTEM AT THE TIME IT WAS SETUP THE MWC DID NOT HAVE A TEAM THAT COULD COMPETE WITH BIG CONFERENCES.

THE REASON THE UTAH UTES ARE ALL OF SUDDEN COMPETIVE IS BECAUSE THE UTES IN THE LAST 2 OR 3 YEARS HAVE BEEN RECRUITING IN "BIG STATE OF TEXAS". ENOUGH SAID?

POLITICIANS SHOULD STICK TO POLITICS AND STAY OUT OF THE COLLEGE SPORTS.

IF UTES DO GET INTO A BCS CONFERENCES "PAC 10, BIG 10, BIG 12" ETC YOU WILL NOT LIKE THE OUTCOME.
