Re: Congrats #3 Utah | 9:05 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
This was probably written by a person who has never actually played the game. Those of us who have know that talk means nothing and that on any given night, anyone can beat anyone. To watch Utah dismantle #4 Alabama, then claim "USC, Texas, Florida or Oklahoma would demolish Utah or any other non-BCS team" shows lack of football knowledge.

Utah just proved that because you are in the SEC, Big Ten, whatever, does not mean you are better than everyone else. I'd love to see Florida play 3 or 4 non-BCS opponents a year because you know what? They'd lose at least one of them. Florida and others won't play them because 1) it will hurt their BCS ranking and 2) they could lose.

Utah did everything they were asked to do. If they don't get a share of the AP title, something is really wrong.

GOOD JOB UTAH!!!!!!!!!! AS A BYU FAN I WAS CHEERING FOR THE UTARDS. THANKS FOR MAKING SWITZER EAT CROW!!!!!!!! AND YES UTAH SHOULD BE #1.
Ute Man | 9:38 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Problem is, these BCS Geeks are too busy making their little computer calculations in fantasy land, to pay attention to what's happening in the real world!

It's not BCS or Bust, it's, the BCS is a BUST!

Utah demolished a very good Alabama team!

All the sports analysts said this was a very good Alabama team, before the game! Now they say, whoops, our bad, maybe this wasn't a very good Alabama team? Huh, go figure?

It's enough to make your head spin! The BCS is like the Matrix, or the computer from the Terminator movies, it has become self aware, and is doing everything it can to survive, and that means discrediting teams like Utah and Boise State, by discrediting the teams they played and beat, namely Pitt, Oklahoma, and Alabama. The BCS will do anything to survive, because there is BIG MONEY involved, and anytime this happens, there is a conflict of interest, are we more interested in the money, or are we more interested in maintaining the credibility of the college game? Where the BCS is concerned the money will always be first!

Sad, sad, state of affairs! Go Utes!

Good job Utes. I'm a BYU alumni and fan, but want to give credit where credit is due. Basketball on the other hand....
BCS Beauty Contest | 10:11 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
College football has always been like a beauty contest. When BYU won the national championship in 1984 (by the way it is unofficial, no NCAA trophy is actually given) the beauty contest was open to all. If somehow the little state could produce a bathing beauty.

But the bigger states like CA, FL and TX were convinced that only good looking girls come from their states and decided to rig the contest so that girls from other states could not compete. Indeed, there was a contest and Utah could enter a woman in the contest but there would be a glass ceiling, maybe a runner-up position but never again would the beauty queen come from a small state.

Let's face it, the BCS is a bogus elitist system set up to prevent somebody like a BYU from winning a title, but people are beginning to realize that a beauty contest is a beauty contest except now there are two potential beauty queens from pre-chosen states supposedly dueling to be the queen. But unless there is an actual play-off where all conferences are allowed at least one entry, it will remain a beauty contest but not one open to everyone.

While creating a playoff system is laudable, there is big money coming into play. ESPN just bought the rights for the ORANGE, Sugar, Fiesta and BCS championship game for 2011 through 2013 for 125 million dollars a year. ABC, another Disney affiliate, has the rights to the Rose Bowl. College football has been about the money for the past half a century. Major college programs, including the MWC are not spending millions on their football programs just for college pride With that type of money involved, what incentive would the BCS colleges, networks or the NCAA have to change this?
Jakarta Fan | 5:59 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009
The BC$ has always used the flimsy smokescreen that it was set up to ensure a "National Championship" game. Baloney. The real reason for the BC$ is money. The system exists to ensure that the $35M a game payoff stays in the pockets of the BC$ conferences. The first step in fixing the process is to not give any conferences automatic berths. Just assign the BC$ bowl slots to the top teams regardless of conference (#1 vs. #2, #3 vs. #4, #5 vs. #6, etc.).
Bear Laker | 8:14 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009
I should have skipped reading the comments. While I agree that the BCS needs to be abolished to give teams like Utah from non BCS conferences the chance to win the NC, after reading all the comments, I still hate the Yewt fans. What a bunch of classes nincompoops. Why don't you just celebrate the great season you had without the vile comments about BYU. The yewts were clearly superior this year to every team they played, and thru the process of extrapolation ought to be the NC. Can't you Ute fans just for once rise to the level of class that your team rose to this year?
Lobofan in Albq | 9:00 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009
The BCS is nothing more than a beauty pageant. I don't think a single fan is disputing that OU and Florida are great teams, but it is such a farce to appoint two teams to play for a title when there are many others that are deserving of the same chance. And this happens every year.

I believe a playoff would actually be more lucrative for college FB than the current Bowl system. Problem is the big dollar bowl lobbyists have a choke hold on the people that pull the strings.

re: Bear Laker

Obviously you read the comments from a biased point of view.

If you've read these boards, some Zoobs are saying pretty nasty things about the Utes.

It gos both ways!

Quit your whinning. Not going to happen in your lifetime. Be happy you get to go to the big dance every couple of years and BYU gets to go every 25 years. You live in Utah
At what point?? | 1:39 p.m. Jan. 4, 2009
At what point will this question ever reach "critical mass" and something done to change/fix it???
re: bear laker | 2:57 p.m. Jan. 4, 2009
Hey dude there are just as many negative comments from BYU fans about Utah as there are negative comments from Utes. Why is everyone always pointing fingers at the other side?

I am sick of all the comparisons. BYU this Utah that, 1984, 2004 blah blah blah. The BCS breeds comparisons and that breeds hatred. In the NFL and all the other sports in the world there are no comparisons made by people because they are made by the teams on the field!

So really what the BCS is selling is greed, hatred, controversy and it sells so well that it is awfully hard to get rid of even though it is completely unfair and everyone! knows it, even the people running it.

So BYU and Utah fans lets be above the BCS and quit making comparisons. Utah deserves at least a piece of the national championship and i am proud of them--A true BYU fan

PS Fellow BYU fans please show some class and even if you don't think Utah deserves a national championship don't say anything negative about them. They went undefeated what can you say negative about them!
Richard | 3:04 p.m. Jan. 4, 2009
Let's get congress or President Obama by executive order to take away the tax exempt status of the BCS until there is a playoff.

BYU-UTAH FAN | 6:33 p.m. Jan. 4, 2009
This is a good article that points up some great logic. In addition, national newscasters should also remember that the Utes beat Michigan in the big house and why is it that there is so little comment that the Utes played and beat six bowl bound teams this season? That would have been a great story any other year.
Chase SL | 8:51 p.m. Jan. 4, 2009
100% honest. Utah deserves a top 5 ranking. Not 1 or 2. Florida and Oklahoma are much much better. TCU got whopped by Oklahoma. Yes Florida lost a game by 1 point. Their schedule was Brutal, yet they handled their opponents. Utah played 3 maybe 4 good teams, they are awesome. But please lets not make the state of Utah look like incompetent posers and say were number 1.
DJF | 9:23 p.m. Jan. 4, 2009
I'm old now and still remember the Original Western Athletic Conference of which both BYU and Utah were part. In those days schools like Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Oklahoma, Nebraska and a few others dominated college football. This was because, absent scholarship limits, those schools were 3, 4 or 5 deep in blue chip athletes at every position. Then in the 1980s Shcolarship limits began to be imposed and you would see teams like Boston College and BYU winning national championships. Scholarship limits have now reached a point that lower division teams like Apalachian State are capable of defeating teams like Michigan. Talent is spread out throughout the NCAA and it is no longer possible for teams to dominate year after year. So yes, the BCS is a huge joke.
Time For Change | 12:35 a.m. Jan. 5, 2009
What needs to happen here is all the universities need to forget bowing to the BCS, and start their own playoff championship. Who cares what the BCS brings them. Everybody wants to see a real payoff, so if these colleges would start their own system, it would take off like wildfire, not to mention all the media attention such a "controversial" move would bring. Everyone would know about it.

It's what needs to happen, but since Americans have become so wimpy, and always insist on doing everything according to the system, it will probably never happen.
Anonymous | 8:42 a.m. Jan. 5, 2009
Plus One does not solve the problem. Assuming Texas beats Ohio State, then three teams have some legitimate claim to the Plus One Bowl-Texas, USC and Utah. So then you have a Plus One controversy. Here is the answer:

Go to a 10-game season, which will reduce injuries and allow students in nojn-playoff programs to focus more on academics. Have a 16-team playoff NFL style for the first round, with higher seeded team hosting the first round. Second round would be in "neutral" field bowl venues; same with third round and final round. Teams with winning seasons not in the playoff play in traditional second and third tier bowls. Make more money. Have a real national champion. Give the fans more great football!
playoff is the only solution | 3:51 p.m. Jan. 5, 2009
talk all you want but this BCS thing is a joke and always has been. College football is the ONLY major sporting event without a playoff. Without a playoff a true champ will never be crowned.
Taco | 1:29 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
The BCS has solved nothing- it's meaningless. What is the relevancy of the teams playing in BCS bowl games but not in the National Championship game? Nothing. The only way to legitimize the National Champion in college football is through a playoff system. Anyone who argues against a playoff in college football is not a true college football fan.
cindy | 1:45 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
So, why don't the Western Conference teams make their own BCS league (the WBCS, maybe), institute their own Bowl games (and maybe take over the Rose, Fiesta, Holiday Bowls) and not invite the other teams....
They can invite who they want to "advertise" at the games, and I'm sure that whatever sports station will be just fine with it.

Re: Non-BCS Crybabies
Are you really THAT ignorant? Who the heck does Cincinnati or Virginia Tech play week in and week out to make THEIR conferences so superior to the Mountain West? That is the WEAKEST argument I've ever heard. Even the vaunted SEC has years where there are no more than 1 or 2 great teams in the whole conference.
cindy | 6:54 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Well, Alabama is the one crying, now.
Anonymous | 4:29 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
hope this lawsuit works and not only sues the BCS but ends this mess. We need a playoff. It should be the top 16 teams. Conference champions shouldn't get an automatic bid because Virginia Tech was 9-4. There was a 3-way tie in the Big 12 south and all of the teams should be in the playoff. They should end the conferenece champion games altogether.

GO UTES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some people are really going out of their way and making the kind of effort that will help change an unjust system Some may have seen the "bcsbash.com" bus travelling across the country. They need support to continue their propaganda.Let's help.
