"One and done Yewties, see you in the cellar AGAIN next year."

Really? If memory serves, BYU was in the cellar more recently than Utah - does the name Gary Crowton ring a bell? The last time we were in the cellar was before Ronnie Mac was coaching.
Amazing | 11:46 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
What is with BYU fans, low IQ's or what?

" hope you are referring to this year only, because you would be correct. If you are referring to the totality of the programs, then you sir are a joke. BYU beat them and won the conference title the last two years prior to this."

Sir, lets look at the last 7 years can we. Ok, you can go back to 1984 now.
Re: Re: Hilarious | 11:52 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
"IF that ball was run more..." Yes, and if if's and but's were cherries and nuts, then every day'd be Christmas.

It's not Utah's fault that Anae chose to pass so much, but that ship has sailed, and will not coming back to port ever again. Utah won, 48-24, and no amount of wishing or "if only" hypothesizing will change the final score.

If you want to talk about "if only's" then go back and ask Ron McBride about his last year at the U. They were 3 plays from finishing 8-3 instead of 5-6, but Chris Hill still fired him.

Next Year's BYU game | 12:04 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009
Hey, I think I have an idea for the MUSS section next year at the BYU game.

How about a poster that says "1984 Has-Beens" and of course "Hall Throws Another Interception"
Sincere congrats from a coug | 12:09 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009
Congratulations to Utah -- the only double BCS buster. You did the MWC a huge service. TCU and Colorado State also deserve kudos for their wins (although I really wanted TCU to beat Boise State badly to earn the MWC even more respect). It is a shame that my BYU team and Air Force did not do their part and take advantage of opportunities to boost our conference's profile and standing.

The following is representative of commentary by several national sportswriters (from a writer for Fox Sports):

"This isn't 1984 BYU; that Cougars team didn't beat anyone as good as the 2008 Oregon State team, much less a TCU or an Alabama. This isn't 2004 Utah or 1999 Marshall or 1998 Tulane. So where, really, should Utah be put in the final rankings? If you're going to say No. 1, no matter what happens in the BCS championship game, it's hard to argue."

As a BYU alum this is difficult to say, but I would have Utah at #1 if I had a vote in the polls. The BCS system needs to be broken permanently and that would help.

Again, congrats to Utah -- you did the MWC proud!

The (un-biased) Truth | 1:28 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009
You 1984 BYU throw-backs need to move on and get a life. You all know you won the "controversial" NC by default. No team on their schedule that year finished ranked in the AP top 20. You barely inched out a non-prestigious Holiday Bowl win against a mediocre 6-5 Michigan team that finished 6th in it's own conference. Wow! That's impressive! All you can hang your hat on is that you finished undefeated that year, and I give you your props for that, but you proved yourself to no one, without any quality wins against ranked opponents! So, let the past be the past, and fast forward to the reality of today where the Utes aren't claiming the NC just by the mere fact that they are undefeated. They deserve it, although they won't get it, having beat ranked teams all year long, and they not only defeated, but schooled a very good Alabama team that had held the #1 spot for nearly half the season going into their last week of play. There is no comparison. This Utah team is heads and tails above BYU's 1984 NC charity gift. UTES, GO, ALL, THE, WAY!
SAMI | 9:30 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009
Wow..in reading some of this stuff..it seems BYU fans have a problem with their ego. Utah won a major victory and all you can do is strut around saying "YEAH BUT, YEAH BUT......" What's the problem? You act like silly little kids. Stand behind the UTES. Or was Brant Gumble right....BYU...Podunk U? Get some class! If BYU had been in the same place we would have been cheering for BYU! Grow up, you're acting like a BAMA fan.
1984 hangers on | 11:21 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009
So how did you like Jimmy Johnson comparing the Utes run this year to exactly what you did in '84? Does Cougar nation all hate him now too?
Mick | 11:30 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009
BTW, it is Bryant Gumble, and he labeled BYU "Bo-Diddley Tech"

Anyway, BYU does have one National Championship to their credit, BUT, even Utah with zero national championships is still just one behind.

Is that dominance or what?

After seeing Utah play football for the first time ever, and hearing all their rant about their Mountain West Conference, I thought I would take a closer look.
It's easy to see why they dominated their league. The only national championships on record are for womens cross country, mens skiing, and men's volleyball.
Maybe they are starting a new trend, but until football teams from the MWC can consistently play with real leagues, maybe they shouldn't act like high school kids when they actually win a big game. After you have played a few years you will know that all teams, no matter how good, have bad days. When you play a team who has nothing to gain from playing you, and who's last game was for a chance to play for the national championship, then maybe it can still be a big win but probably not.
Utah played a good game, but answer me this. Would you have had the same intensity if you were playing Mississippi State. If Bama was so overrated, as some of you are saying, then why is it such a big win?
I applaud you Crimson and White spirit (we had it first)but wake up and smell the Tradition.

I applaud you Red and White spirit (we've got it now) ...and if losing is your "tradition", then you got it goin' on Tide. Don't it smell good???

Just grow up, get off your high horse and say "well done Utah". All the silliness about "wouda, couda, shouda" is nonsense. People like you just cause hard feelings between everybody. It is what it is, a Utah win.

WELL DONE UTAH!!
84 vs 2008 | 6:43 p.m. Jan. 4, 2009
Yes, Zoobs you are right BYU is the dominate program and all sport writers and rest of the nation are wrong when they crown Utah as the best non-BCS program in the nation.

The 84 era is dead please tell us exactly what has BYU done in the BCS era? What have they won? What major bowl games? What ranked teams?

Little brother is shinning while big brother has faded living in the shadow of little brother and using past glory days as proof as why they are still relevant.

Go UTES!!!
parkite1970 | 6:49 p.m. Jan. 4, 2009
Hope Fkorida and the Okies play a very sloppy game with a relatively close score--then the AP champs will be in Utah. Also, for the "1984" crowd at BYU: Remember Utah won a basketball NC many years ago--way back when the game and the championship were very different from today. The past THAT far back really is ancient history. Appreciate both accomplishments in the CONTEXT of their time, but quit trying to live in the past. Haven't any of you guys seen the movie Napolean Dynamite?
Edward D King | 7:26 p.m. Jan. 4, 2009
I have a problem understanding why the 13-0 Utah football team is not number 1. The BCS missed this one. I'am a Ole Miss Fan and when you can beat a SEC football team like Alabama who once were voted number 1 in the nation then you deserved to be number 1. Y'all are the only undefeated team left. BCS please show me why!!!!!!!!

It's the 1984 BYU NC that created the BCS. Nobody could believe that a second rate nobody could be crowned NC just because their toughest team was St. Mary's Girls school and then went undefeated. Everyone in the college football arena puts an asterisk next to the BYU NC because of that. BYU has still never beat a high caliber college team. BYU could never compete with the top ten team (I'm talking a team that finishes in the top ten). Utah has done it and won in two BSC bowl games in just the last four years.

Congratulations to The University of Utah from Baghdad! I wish I could have been there, but unfortunately Uncle Sam wouldn't let me. First off, I want to thank all the BYU fans who have congratulated the U on this fantastic victory. I will admit it I am a BYU hater, but I do cheer for them in every non-conference game, (I also hope they lose every conference game). As much as I hate BYU I have to hand it to them they have a great football tradition, and I won't say anything bad about 1984, it was a National Championship. I don't think BYU is going to be our problem for the foreseeable future, TCU is going to become our biggest rivals for MWC dominance.

I think Utah should be the AP National Champions. I have heard the same thing many times over here from fans of a lot of different teams. The U earned a lot of respect with this win, National Championship or not.

"USC will still be rated higher than the Yewts no matter what happens. Settle down Yewties, you are acting like you've never been there before. Oh my bad, YOU HAVENT!"

What, go undefeated? Because that's the only thing 1984 team did. Can you remind me again what the 1984 team achieved on the field that the 2004 and 2008 team did not?

Beating a ranked team? Oh wait you didn't in 1984 and in your Quest for Perfection season 2008. Utah beat #19 Pitt in 2004 and #4 Bama in 2008.

USC might end up being ranked higher but one thing for sure we beat OSU and they couldn't.

This game was very similar to the 1993 Sugar Bowl when no one gave us a chance. No excuses from anyone here.. we got our rear ends handed to us by a better team.

We pride ourselves one being one of the very best programs in the history of College Football. Class, Pride, and Tradition are part of out heritage..and ot looks like it is part of your as well.

Again - comgratulations on a well desreved victory. Roll Tide!

I could not have been prouder of the Utes. As a BYU fan, I have said from the beginning (when my team lost due to arrogance and other sins) I said I was going to cheer for the Utes - as a Utahn I had to!). I was extremely, extremely impressed the Us game plan - right from the get-go, it was like a shock and awe attack, and it worked! I have never seen BYU with such a dramatic game plan, even in the big games. Bronco only admitted that they were NOT PREPARED for the opponent (TCU), and they needed TWO MORE DAYS of practice after losing to Arizona. What stupid and arrogant excuses - to say the least. Bronco and his staff should have a football fireside where Kyle and his staff teach Bronco and his staff HUMILITY!!! Who is PERFECT now? Congratulations to Kyle and the Utes!!! You made a believer out of this Cougar!!

Hey WELL DONE,Here you go: Well done Utah, you beat a team who could care less about having to play you.
If you're worried about hard feelings, maybe you should read some of the crap Utah fans have put in this forum. As far as tradition goes,Urban Meyers left your little Indian Village to come to the SEC so he could, in his words, "Have an opportunity to play for a national championship"
Go to the SEC website and check the number of national championships owned by the SEC.(in football not womens cross country)
Oh and while you're there, check and see which school has won the most national championships in NCAA history.I know you get excited about your team, that's what good fans do, but don't confuse one good season in an upstart conference, with being a national power. Maybe someday you can move into a real football conference ,where going undefeated will actually mean something.
I hope we can meet again when we actually give a rip about playing you. If it's anytime soon, the way you guys have run your mouths will give us plenty to get fired up about. ROLL TIDE-- 12 NATIONAL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHPS (YOU GET THOSE FROM WINNING!)
Re: Coug AZ | 6:24 p.m. Jan. 5, 2009
"Settle down, Yewties, you act like you have never been there before. Oh yeah, You haven't."

I can only assume that "Coug AZ" was born after 2004, because we HAVE been there before - undefeated, BCS Bowl Crashers - the whole thing.

And why wouldn't we be ranked higher than USC? They played a softer schedule, an easier bowl opponent (who, by the way, had a TERRIBLE game), and finished with one loss to Oregon State, who Utah beat. Give me a good reason why USC should be ranked higher than Utah?

When Utah destroys Alabama, all we hear is what a terrible game Bama played. When USC beats Penn State (the Lions played WELL below their average as was noted a zillion times by the announcers), it's said that USC manhandled them. No respect.
BYU Fan | 7:14 p.m. Jan. 5, 2009
I never thought I'd say this, but WAY TO GO UTAH!! Very cool. Utah should be #1. No question.
Lobos | 8:54 p.m. Jan. 5, 2009
Alabama was slow and out of shape period.
New Mexico would have beat them as easy as Utah.
Utah is better than Texas | 8:13 a.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Anyone see the Fiesta Bowl? Texas needed a very generous spot and an Ohio State brain lapse to score a last minute touchdown and pull off a win against #10.

Utah thrashed #4.

If Texas is ranked higher than the Utes when all is said and done, we can only conclude that the voters simply aren't watching the games. Robots.
Strained Logic | 9:00 a.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Some Cougars (gratefully a rare minority) continue to taunt the Utes by saying "neener neener neener, we won a national championship, and you never will."

Besides focusing on the distant past, this is the equivalent of saying "neener, neener neener, I have brown eyes, and you never will." Taunting someone for something beyond their control is the epitome of childish logic. The Utes have molded themselves into a chiseled, well-conditioned athlete, who just set a world record in a demanding race - excelling in everything under their control - but the "you'll never have brown eyes" taunt continues.

Such an accusation says more about the intellectual capacity, maturity and character of the accuser than the ability, status or talent of the accused.
How I see it | 8:05 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
BYU 1, OU 2, UF 3, USC 4, UT 5, UoU 6.

That's how I see it.
RE: Tidedaddy | 11:17 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
What an excellent example of a loser attitude. "Oh, we didn't want to be there, so we're going to show up and not play." If this is true then Alabama should have a new motto:

"Alabama Football, where we try sometimes!" Or, "Alabama football, as useful as the cinderblocks holding up our car!"

I would be embarrassed to think what you just wrote.
Utegrad76 | 12:48 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
The Utes finish 13-0. Beat four teams ranked in the Top 25, one of which happened to be Alabama. Tide Rolled, end of discussion.
Gator Pride | 10:40 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Let's be very clear here. The only thing standing between BYU and it's "National Championship" was a failed two-point conversion attempt by Nebraska in the official 1984 National Championship Game at the Orange Bowl Classic on January 2, 1984. The top 2 ranked teams, the unbeaten Nebraska Cornhuskers and the once-beaten Miami Hurricanes, met for the National Championship. After leading 31-17 in the fourth quarter, Miami held on for a 31-30 victory. Nebraska pulled to within one with :48 left to play, but quarterback Turner Gill's pass for a two-point conversion was tipped away by Miami safety Ken Calhoun. The win gave Miami (NOT BYU) its first National Championship!

BYU was a joke. Their 24-17 win over a weak 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl remains a joke to this day.
Utah for #1 | 12:01 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Utah deserves at least a tie for #1 with tomorrow night's winner. Here's why:

- The loser of Thursday's game has 2 losses, so they're out

- # Texas has one loss and barely beat #10. True, they beat four "Top 25" teams this year, but so did Utah. UT cannot be number one.

- #5 USC beat #8, but no worse than Utah beat #4. USC has one loss - to a team Utah beat.

- Alabama was #4 going into the bowl season. They are clearly out.

The only fair and logical choice is for Utah and the winner of Thursday night's game to be deemed "co-champions."
TideDaddy RE: | 5:36 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
What's embarrasing; is going undefeated in the Mountain Worst Conference, and then whining because no one cares. I believe 2 of the top 25 teams you brag about beating were also from the Mountain Worst Conference. The only reason you will remain in the top 10 is because you beat a Bama team who rolled over and played dead, while you jumped up and down and pounded your chests. It's tough being outside the candy store without enough money to get in. As far as motto's go, here's one for you. "ALABAMA FOOTBALL: WE PAVED THE ROAD FOR NOBODYS LIKE YOU." Or how 'bout ALABAMA FOOTBALL: "GOT 12?"
Rotag | 6:36 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
I can't see how Utah ended up the football season undefeated after the gruelling schedule they played.
