Utah could be ranked as high as #2 when it's all done! Oklahoma or Florida wins somewhat convincingly, Ohio State knocks off Texas, and you have a HUGE ARGUMENT that Utah should finish at #2!

You little accomplishments over the past year nowhere come close to what what the Cougs have done over the last half century. One and done Yewties, see you in the cellar AGAIN next year.

Utah played as well as any football team can play and that wins games! Alabama would of placed 4th or 5th in the MWC. Their defense looked like BYU! Johnson's receivers were wide open to give him 336 passing yards. It's hard to understand how they were ranked #1 duuing the season!

Utah Played a perfect game to beat Alabama! Give the Ut. coaches all the credit they deserve, as they were prepared to play football! Alabama would of placed 4th or 5th in the MWC. Their pass defense looked as bad as BYU! Johnson's receivers were wide open all night, as he was able to rack up 336 passing yards!

This board is reserved from now on for the adults who know how to speak respectfully to each other and understand sports and bowl payouts (Utah splits it's take with MWC amd all other non-BCS teams... Utah will net about 1.4 Million, in June -- your "3 million" to BYU show lack of knowledge.)

As a real member of the Crimson Club, I would ask you to grow up and take your childish comments to school with you on Monday when you play with the other 2nd graders.

Thanks to the Classy BYU fans for your support. Many of us Utah fans will surely return the favor someday.

Its good to hear that most BYU fans recognize that what is good for Utah is good for BYU. But then there are others. . . .
The fact is BYUs NC happened a long time ago with a different coach and staff, different players, and different criteria for a NC. Based on results (current!) BYU didn't go to a BCS bowl. Weren't even close! Utah did! Utah was the MWC representative. Will BYU get there? Possible! What Utah did last night was place the MWC in a more competitive arena. BYU will have to step it up to be able to play in that arena. Frankly I would like to see it happen. It will make for a better competitve season for both Utah and BYU. Here is my vote for a national Championship for Utah!! GO UTES #1!!!

USC number 2, OU or UF 3. Your dreamin' up on the hill. You'll be lucky to finish 4th. Settle down it was a good game but does not come close to MANY of the bowl games BYU has participated in. You have a way to go, don't get ahead of yourself.

As a die-hard Cougar fan I must congratulate Utah for an outstanding win. You guys did the MWC proud and if BYU would have played in their bowl game with half of the heart and determination that Utah did, they would have killed Arizona 42-7. The win helps everyone in the conference.

But next year it's back to business- GO COUGS!

Congrats Utah, very impressive win!

Re: hilarious | 5:30 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Not to take anything away from Utah because they were clearly better than BYU this year, but that is just this year. To the guy who said it is a joke that BYU belongs in same discussion as Utah, I hope you are referring to this year only, because you would be correct. If you are referring to the totality of the programs, then you sir are a joke. BYU beat them and won the conference title the last two years prior to this. Once again a immature Ute fan with an inferiority complex. Get over it! Utah is better this year. No sane BYU fan would differ. BYU would not have beaten Utah this year, but if that ball is run more it is not a 48-24 score. Remember near the end of the third, BYU had the ball driving to take the lead and only down 27-24. BYU may very well beat Utah next year, or they may lose. Either way when the last 20 games have been split evenly, and most by less than a touchdown, that is the definition of the "same discussion". Great job this year Utes. You deserve NC consideration.
re: cougar ron | 5:56 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
please tell me a few of the "many" bowl games byu has been in which compare. Beating the #4 team which has more bowl appearances than any team in the country, in their own backyard? A team that was #1 much of the season. When has byu beat a top 10 team?
re: byucoug 4:04pm | 6:01 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
You're calling Utah a one and done team? You must be 4 years old or younger, because otherwise you would know that this is Utah's second trip to the BCS, and second victory in as many tries
Username | 6:02 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
If the Utes had won in the last minute with trick plays, then I would not agree that they should be National Champions, but the Utes dominated what was touted as the most physical team in the country. USC, Florida, and Oklahoma all lost their chance to claim to be the best team when they lost a game. Unless college football goes to a playoff system, in which the best team on the field is crowned national champion, then the team that won all of its games and showed itself to be of the same caliber as the best teams should be national champion. This year, that is the Utes. In the 1980s, Nebraska and Oklahoma were always in the national title hunt, and the only difficult games these teams played every year were each other and a bowl game. Yet their credentials were never disputed. It's time to stop the madness. The fact that USC even has a legitimate claim to be the best team--which it does--demonstrates that the BCS has solved nothing at all. It's time for a playoff system. In the meantime, Utes are #1.

"When you try to compare Utah to Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, or USC you have got to be kidding right? You are comparing apples to oranges by trying to say that Utah deserves anything more than a 4 or 5 ranking. For example, on October 11th when Florida played then No.4 LSU... Utah played WY"

On Nov 22nd: When Utah played #14 BYU FL played Citadel. Remind me again how bad the mighty SEC TN beat up WY at home this year, what was that score?

Look homer non one is saying MWC is better then those conferences. This year the fact is MWC was 6-2 against PAC-10, 2-0 against SEC and Utah's SOS is greater then Bama and finally Utah is the ONLY UNDEFEATED team in the U.S.A!!!

If USC gets ranked higher then Utah at the end I will puke since Utah did what USC couldn't that is to beat OSU. Beating #8 Penn State in a home game isn't as impressive as going into SEC country and beating up #4 Bama.

These mighty programs should schedule home-and-away series against these weak programs just to shut us up.

"Next year Yewties. ... Be proud of your little win but when you come back home you always know who your BIG brother is."

Why can't big brother get out of little brothers spotlight. Little brother is shinning and big brother just can't stand it.

Hey Zoobs during your Quest for Perfection season were you not taught that "Envy is a sin"?
re: Utah #3 | 7:10 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
I don't agree with your logic. To use your own logic against you, Utah beat OSU, who beat USC, etc., etc.

Utah deserves a share of the AP #1.

The BCS needs to change or go away.

"You'll be lucky to finish 4th. Settle down it was a good game but does not come close to MANY of the bowl games BYU has participated in."

Oh enlightened one please due tell us unworthy Utes what impressive Bowl games big brother has won?

Utes define sucess by winning BCS games what about BYU? So I guess just "participating" in bowl games is how big brother defines Quest for Perfection?

BYU has made 27 Bowl appearances, 9-17-1:

Holiday Bowl (4 wins, 6 losses, 1 tie),
Cotton Bowl (1 win),
Las Vegas Bowl (2 wins, 2 losses)
Copper Bowl (1 win)
Tangerine/Citrus Bowl (2 losses)
Freedom Bowl (1 win, 1 loss)
Liberty Bowl (2 losses)
Aloha Bowl (1 loss)
Fiesta Bowl (1 loss)
Motor City Bowl (1 loss)
All-American Bowl (1 loss)

As a Ute the only ones I care about of the many we have played in and won are:

2004 Fiesta 35-7 over #19 Pitt
2008 Sugar 31-17 over #4 Bama

Hey, you still have the 84 win against mighty 6-5 MI team.

Utah should be in the National Championship game vs. florida USC lost to Oregon State who Utah beat so Utah vs. Florida Thursday night in the Fed ex BCS National Championship game. GO UTES Brian johnson for Heisman with the way he has played in the last three games. And the BCS sytesm sucks we really need a playoff for some teams in the MWC like Utah BYU and TCU and in WAC Bosie State and questionably Hawai'i. When Utah is good we are beating BCS teams in BCS games when BYU is good they are losing in Vegas against unranked teams.

When Utah is good we throttle BYU (see 2004 and 2008 for an exmple) when BYU is good they need Harline and 4&18.

Utah is the best non-BCS program not BYU, get over it big brother. And no I'm not comparing the last 50 years, its in the current BCS era.

And all those arguing Utah got lucky against TCU, OSU... let me remind you FL (probable NC) lost at home to Old Miss. How many of you think Old Miss is better then TCU? Or look at USC couldn't beat OSU something that Utah did.
RE: RE: Cougar Ron | 7:38 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Great Win for Utah against a good Bama Team. I respect it. Just remember that there wasn't a BCS system in 84 and BYU simply played who they drew in their bowl game. And 84 was a Quest for Perfection with a national championship. But great job Utes. Hats off to you!
great win! | 7:56 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
awesome win by the Utes. I can say that it is a great feeling to be a ute right now. The atmosphere around school is crazy during this streak. The mountain west has really good teams and proved it to Bama. Not to take anything away from our conference, but the Wyoming win against Tenn, I don't really look at that as an upset. Tenn was a terrible team this year. Even UCLA beat them. But Wyoming did beat them. And for my Utes, you've done everything that you needed to do. On paper and on the field, you are the National Champions of college football.

Oh, coogs, stop crying because you guys were nothing this year. Stop bringing up your 84 NC. Oh and the qUest for perfection was completed by Utah not the TDS.
RE: Cougar Ron and BYUCoug | 8:00 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Okay Roooonnnny.

Let's look at BYU's bowl wins since losing (17 times mind you doesn't count)

1980 SMU ranked #20
1981 Washington State Unranked
1983 Missouri Unranked
1984 Michigan Unranked
1988 Colorado Unranked
1994 Oklahoma Unranked (see a trend here?)
1996 Kansas State ranked #17
2006 Oregon Unranked
2007 UCLA Unranked

WOW!!! You are right this doesn't come close to any bowl BYU has played in because IT IS WAY BETTER!!!!!!!

BYUCoug you can call Utah your little brother but does it really matter when "little brother" is bigger, richer and better looking? I didn't think so.
McCoug | 8:06 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Utah should have been beat by TCU. You got away with one. There is nooooo way you will be in the top four. USC would cream you. BYU has a better team and only a few bad bounces away from what you could not accomplish. Sorry Utes, your still second fiddle.
I'm confused | 8:19 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
A couple of posts ago a BYU fan is talking about all the bowls BYU has played in. First, I'm not sure I would bring that record up when you have lost 2/3rds of the time. Second, I'm not sure I would bring that up when Utah has won it's last 8 bowl games (and two of those where BCS bowl games).

I agree BYU for a long time was the better team/program, just like before that Utah was the better team/program. Currently it's been pretty even if you at the last 10-15 years, but please don't use your bowl record to prove anything.

Also because of the way the system is set up Utah should not be the BCS NC, but they should be the AP NC. I only say they should not be the BCS NC because of the set up, but I completely disagree with the BCS setup.
Re: McCoug | 8:41 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
"BYU has a better team and only a few bad bounces away from what you could not accomplish."

What? Utah beat BYU by 24 points and that was Whittingham showing respect to his old team. BYU snuck by the 0-13 UW Huskies on a very questionable call. BYU got beat by 30 points by TCU. Utah beat TCU.

Please don't comment on here if you don't know what you're talking about.

Oh, USC would cream Utah? Yeah, just like USC creamed Oregon State. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.

Hmmm. Utah beat the #4 team in the country by 14.

First, Thank you to all of the BYU fans graciously posting and cheering us on....you guys see the big picture. To answer, an earlier question...I would be cheeering BYU if they were in the same place....Many Utah fans would be as well....everyone needs to ignore the haters(from both sides)....they won't go away but if you ignoring them, they lose significance...

As for the game, what an amazing atmosphere from minute one..I can't talk and nor can anyone who was in our group. The play on the field was absolutely dominated on all fronts by Utah(but every time Ingram touched the ball I was worried). The finish was just awesome. Time for a playoff.

However, if Austin Collie, under similar circumstances had said the same thing, you whiny Utes fans would be all over him.

Obviously, you are not a student or graduate from BYU with your total lack of intelligence and cluelessness about football. The Utah win last night is the greatest win in the history of not only Utah football, but any Utah collegiate football team. The Alabama fans down here in NO constantly are commenting on how impressed they were with Utah's football team and fans. We totally rocked the Superdome.

Utah deserves the AP poll #1, giving them a share of the title! I know it's a stretch, but I'm calling out the AP, BE REAL, don't be a fantasy poll like your cohorts the BCS! The AP knows Utah deserves it, and if their voters have any shred of integrity, honesty, conviction, credibility, and love for the college game, they will do the right thing, and vote Utah #1!
UTES FAN | 9:55 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Utes,

You make us very proud last night. At first, you showed Alabama that you mean business. You carried yourself very well. How did Asiata get through to make the second touch down? There must have been a secret passageway made by the team. It was a game that was very well executed, starting from the coach down through Brian Johnson to the rest of the team.

You were very quick, strong and energetic. Your mistakes were minimal. You remind me of the Forty Niners. Whenever you get the ball, you go with it to the end just like the previous 12 games. Those sacks were awesome! I don't want to leave out anybody...all positions contributed to the Big Win.

Even the crowd, the fans were well behaved. You represented Utah very well..The only unbeaten team in the Nation. Thanks for practising and giving your all last night. The coaches are the best...they had unwavering faith in you...and you executed the game plan like professionals. I have only watched a total of two of your games, and it looks like I know a lot already about football.

You deserve the best, and all your gifts were well deserved!

If Notre Dame's name replaced the University Of Utah they would be declared the National champs by the AP without a dissenting vote. I do not believe that will be the case, but it would be the right thing to do. What can we do as fans to make sure that the AP voters hear at least the arguments in favor of the UTES. Regardless great year and a memory to last a lifetime.

The Utes were good this year but that doesn't mean I have to like them. I am a long time Utah resident who was cheering for Alabama. I have never even been to Alabama. People think that the BCS is about respect but it is really about money - if it wasn't we would have had a playoff system a long time ago. This win won't get the MWC any more respect because to give us the respect would mean that they would have to share the money. That is what this is really all about. I wish they would make the bowls end on New Years Day then take the top 4 teams and playoff during the next two weekends. The season will end on January 8th this year. they could end it on January 15th and have some semblance of a real national champion. Florida/Oklahoma winner, USC, Texas, Utah - never going to happen. The BCS Conferences own the NCAA lock stock and barrell

Hey Utes, its not just against the Utah that BYU fans keep bring up 1984. Up here in Washington state, what little fans that we see, we hear it a lot. Its pretty funny, to see such a weak school holding on to a one year wonder that really was not a wonder when you got back to history and review the games they won. The Univ of Washington is considering putting up 1984 National Champion banner along with our other banners. Now before all you people living the past get upset, go look at the records in 1984, we are co-national champs. BYU can't handle it.

"The question was posted "Name one ranked team that BYU played that year (1984)". At #3 Pitt the first game of the season. BTW it was the first game ever televised on ESPN."

Doesn't count. They ended losers. Its like trying to take credit for the Michigan win this year. Pre-season had them as high as #23-24 - no one, not even Barry Switwer would take credit for that pre-season rank.

Try again....
Re: Re: Hilarious | 11:35 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Yes, my "same discussion" comment was referring to this year only. Over the last 15 or so years, it's been a great rivalry.

But to me, Utah's two BCS bowl wins still outpace BYU's mythical, disputed and 24-year old national championship.

What really bugs me though is the BYU fans on here who are saying "yes, you beat us, and yes you beat former #1 Alabama, but BYU's still the better team." Not this year, folks!
