BYU basketball: Cougar women win 'ugly' game for 7th straight

Nielson's right | 5:11 a.m. Dec. 31, 2008
It's funny that Nielson is the person who stuck the label "ugly"
on this game because although she was the leading scorer her play was the
ugliest. She missed multiple layups and other easy shots, as well as performing
poorly from the free-throw line. If BYU follows her lead, they are going to be
in trouble against MWC foes.

In previous years, especially last year, the Coug's lost these 'so
called' ugly games. They are winning them now. That's a positive step.
Sometimes you have bad nights, but if you can figure out a way to win,
that's the key. This team figures out, and has the confidence to win ugly
games. GOOD FOR THEM. Sure they have to work out some cobbwebs, But aggression,
toughness, and a will to win is the key to a successful season. The are showing
that. Mindy show's that. She's tough, aggressive and has a strong will
to win. This team is young, the skill will catch up to them. Young teams make a
lot of mistakes, but you can't alway's teach fight. Young Riley is a
great example of that. She makes a lot of mistakes but she fights. Jazmine and
Coriann take bad shots and make key errors at times but they have fight. A
fighter chance that's all you can ask for.

Couldn't agree more with coug?fan.....and less with "Nielson's
right." This is a very young team and yet they have a passion that has
gotten them past a lot of horrible performances. Mindy is a large reason why
they are 9-2 and not 2-9. Following her lead will keep them on the winning side
of things. You can't point out one player on that team last night and say
that one player was worse than another. Under the term "ugly win" in
the dictionary, you could paste this game. But a win is a win....especially
with a young team.

Ugly games are just part of the deal. This team is off to a good start. I am
looking forward to the start of conference play; I think BYU will be a force in
the conference. It's just too bad that more people don't realize that
women's basketball is a nice way to spend a couple of hours. Let's get
out and support the Lady Cougars and get the Marriot Center rocking a little
bit!

Why will Judie not play Peterson??? She can shoot the three and provide some
offense which seems like what this team is lacking. Don't be scared to play
a freshman if she can help the team. Maybe the older players need to feel a
little less comfortable to help them play better.

Nielson and Foreman | 2:19 p.m. Jan. 1, 2009
Nielson shot 15 times from 2-point range and made only 5. She missed all 3
three-pointers she tried and made only 3 of 6 from the line. Not too great.
Foreman was really bad also, however, making only 1 of 5 from the field, and 1
of 2 three-pointers. She made 1 of 3 from the free throw line. This sort of
horrible shooting will lose lots of games unless it improves. It would seem from
these stats that Nielson was pretty selfish, unless you saw the game and knew
that she blew several fast-break layups. the team shot a little better (34% as a
team), but it only seemed acceptable because ASU shot a paltry 28%. Stats tell a
lot and its too bad that the DN doesn't publish them with the story.

Once again, I don't understand the critisism of this team FULL of
sophomores. It's true that they will all have to improve to get past
better conference foes, but please LAY OFF of individual players and their
performances in one game. This team is still trying to gel and get comfortable
with each other. It's the critical fans that aren't attending these
games and like to take pot-shots from home. Here's an idea....buy the
$20/yr. season tickets (unbelievable and embarrassing at the same time) and get
out to support these women! Play is going to improve as they get more
experience. Play will improve even faster if they feel and hear support rather
than critisism. Let Juddie do the coaching and do your part to be a fan. A big
one this year will be the Utah game......Gotta have those wins! Go Cougars!
