While a close loss would be better than a blowout loss, I'll be disappointed in anything other than a W. Hopefully the Utes feel the same way.

The Utes are not Hawaii and they are not BYU. They are a quick, physical team that can win this game if they play well. Go Utes!!
Bob | 1:21 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Actually, the Stingers are NOT a "team that didn't make it." They just got rebranded.

Also, the Warriors got bought by Garff to clear the way for the Blaze.

And the Golden Eagles were a very successful club who had diminished returns when the Jazz started being successful, and then dies a painful death when Larry Miller bought them and moved them into his new arena with bad sightlines.
Hank | 2:16 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Huh? Last time I checked North Carolina and Miami were both in the ACC and since both LOST their bowl games how can the ACC be 2-0? Am I missing something here?

I don't want a close game, I want blowout! I want all utes fans to realize they wasted their money attending the game, after the first quarter of play.

From a BYU fan, Roll Tide!
Re: Crush the Utes | 7:52 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Coming from someone who wasted their money on a T-shirt promoting the world's lamest, most tacky and corny piece of propaganda (AKA, 'The Quest')...what you say you 'want' is pretty ridiculous. Though, I'm sure the $20 you splurged on Vegas was well worth the trip.
metamoracoug | 7:55 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Crush the Utes? Are you nuts? It is in BYU's favor if the Utes demolish Alabama. Not only does it make BYU's loss to them less hurtful, but it makes a mockery of the BCS "championship" game where two one loss teams are playing.

I say, "Go Utes! Totally embarrass Alabama and the BCS!"

You "Y" and Yewts have been running your mouths all year about how great you are, well now it's time to put up, or if I think what is about to happen-SHUT UP! I gave the 10 points and didn't think twice about making a LARGE wager. No excuses or whinning after this fiasco is over PLEASE!
1320 kfan | 8:55 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
should switch their affiliation over to utah. This will save them the embarassment of covering a losing school like BYU. They won't have to pretend to be BYU homers either.

Bronco is a better Coach? I have no idea what your on, but it is not on the Game of Football. Bronco needs to Grow some Stones and have his Teams play more aggresive like Utah does. The Utes would Beat BYU 10 out of 10 Times if they played the Games. I wish that all the BYU Fans would at least cheer for a Mountain West Team that is in your Conference even though you don't like them when you Play them.
Re: Provo | 9:33 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Really?!?! Our overrated, poorly recruited, poorly coached, weak skill players just hammered your "mighty" Cougars by THREE TOUCHDOWNS and you come on here and call us lucky?!

Wow!! I thought the smog problem had cleared up since they closed Geneva a few years back. Apparently not though - 'cause "Provo" can't see through his blue-tinted glasses past the end of his own nose.

Go Utes!!
re: Provo | 9:41 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
So Bronco is a better coach but only uses 6 of his allotted 15 practices for the Arizona game, then gets it handed to him. Stop smokin' your blue doubies and wake up! The Y recruits better the Utah? So BYU got beat by worse recruits 48-24. That again shows the coach must be pretty bad if they have better players but lose that bad. Please show some semblance of intelligence in your posts. Your making all the other Y fans look bad.(not that they need much help!)
MississippiUte | 9:44 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
I don't know what fans you're talking to, but I for one want a WIN!! Alabama's a very good team, but they're not a SUPER team. It the Utes play to their potential, they will win, regardless of whether Alabama plays to their potential or not. Stuff the run and make Alabama try and beat the Utes with their passing game - Utes win!!
Re: Provo | 9:44 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Are you serious with your arguments, are you keeping a straight face still even after you submitted your comment.
Ouch | 9:57 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Get ready for a bad loss. Sorry Utes!
Popinga | 10:03 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
It might FEEL like a win though.
BYU Grad 73 | 10:05 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Any "fan" who doesn't pull for teams in his/her own conference against non conference foes is as blind as a mole. A Utah loss in the Sugar Bowl, especially a big one, damages any credibility the MWC has gained the past two years, validates the current BCS mess, and vaporizes any/all victories the Utes had this year.

To be more specific, do you think Boise State had even a remote chance of being invited to a BCS bowl game after what WAC member Hawaii did last year?? Guilt by association is not fair, but it is common. If the powers that be even discussed inviting the Broncos to a game it was because they beat OK a couple of years ago.

A Ute victory, though distasteful to narrow minded "fans" of other teams, is a victory for everyone in the MWC and other non BCS conferences and another step in dismantling the BCS powers.

Go Utes, go MWC!

You go to win or you don't go at all!
BYUFan | 11:00 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
And I'll actually be at the game pulling for the Utes. Anytime a Ute win doesn't hurt the Cougs' chances of winning the conference you gotta pull for them, especially non-conference games. Makes the state and MWC look that much better.

Go Utes, from a True Blue Cougar Fan
Alpine Blue | 11:28 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
re: Crush the Utes is not a Cougar fan, but a simple-minded troll attempting to stoke the rivalry fires.

Any true Cougar fan would have have entitled his remarks as 'Crush the Yewts' and not used the more polite form of Utes.

Nevertheless and with all due respect to Coach Whittingham and his boys-the entire state-indeed the entire MWC will be rooting for you-as what is good for you is good for all of us.

As a life-long BYU fan, I will be rooting for you to pull off the magnificent upset of Alabama and pave the way for BYU to finally bust the BCS sometime in the near future-the very near future.

Thanks for a great season Whitt, BJ, Kruger, et al.

Now go out and finish it by shocking the world!
UteFan | 11:49 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
For those fans who say I hope we can just keep it close, get off the bandwagon and stay at home. We dont want you in New Orleans, we only want true Ute Fans who know that they Utes are going to show the country that the Utes are for real and WILL come away with a GARAUNTEED VICTORY. GO UTES.
Osgrath | 1:53 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
I seriously doubt the Utah players are hoping only to hang with the Tide. They wouldn't be going at all if not to win it all. My fellow Cougar fans owe it to their own selfish interest, if nothing else, to support our conference representative against the BCS.

Not only that, but Utah represents my state, so I want Utah to win for two reasons. If any BYU fans are pulling for Alabama only because they hate Utah, they are not possessed of the basic level of charity that their beliefs teach, but they are showing profound stupidy. I feel bad for people driven by negative emotions such as hate, but I also tend to ignore them. If these poor representatives of my school want to accuse me of not being a fan, I will compare how many years of season tickets and fandom I can claim against theirs. The fact that I want to see Utah beat Alabama is a solid demonstration of that.

GO UTES!

Tide: 42
Utes: 3
MiP | 2:30 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Undoubtedly the Utes are not just hoping to "hang" with the Tide. They gotta believe they can win---even if the fans don't believe they can.

If their faith is shaken perhaps a little pep talk:

--You beat Michigan in the Big House.
--You came back in impressive fashion vs a pesky Air Force team, a potent Oregon State team and a talented TCU team.
--You won the games you were supposed to win easily.
--You smashed your arch rival.
--You're the only current undefeated FBS team.
--You have a 7 game bowl win streak.
--The MWC is 1-0 vs the SEC this year.
Knowah? No way! | 2:37 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Utah 24
Bama 17

This is strength against strength, folks - Bama's rushing attack vs. Utah's 12th ranked rush defense. Our offense is better than their defense, so if we can stop Bama's offense early and stay in the game mentally, we can win this game!

GO UTES!!
byublue | 2:45 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
My two favorite Teams - BYU, and anyone who plays utah. Any true fan would chear for their own team, and whoever is playing their teams rival.

"Better Dead than Red"

Go Tide!!!
Mnt West Conf Athletic Depts | 3:00 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
From all the teams in the Mountain West - even BYU. Thanks Utah for the infusion of millions of extra dollars to all our Athletic Departments. As much as $1.3M in 2004 and another $1.8M this year. That's a GRAND TOTAL of $3.1 MILLION Dollars per team from the Utes. I don't see BYU turning down this money.
UNLV | 3:29 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Do we have a football team? Show me the money. Our basketball program needs it.
FOOTBALL | 4:17 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
BYU will ROCK in their BOWL GAME!

What's that you say?

BYU GOT WORKED IN THEIR BOWL GAME?

BYU FANS are sitting home licking their wounds?

BYU FANS are sitting home inventing ways and imagining scenarios to humble the UTES!

NAH!

GO UTES!

Only LOSERS would hope for a close game. THERE IS NOT SUCH THING AS A MORAL VICTORY.

Either win the game - and spout off as much as you want, or lose and shut up.
TucsonUte | 9:46 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Close game? Why follow the Utes if you only want a close game? I am looking forward to a Utah win. Go big or don't go at all.
Go Utes | 12:26 a.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Taking the the last 5 game averages it most likely will be something like:

Bama 20
Utah 17

But I if our defense continues to play like it has all year and Ludwig comes of with a rare gem then:

Bama 20
Utah 28

Go Utes!! Friday is Ute Day in Utah!! Party begins at noon!!
Underdog | 8:18 a.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Diehard Cougar fan here realizing it's hard to pull for your rival the Utes. My question is, Why pull for mighty Alabama and the SEC? For me pulling for the Utes is the lesser of two evils. The SEC is an awesome conference, but an easy win over Utah will only make SEC fans egos bigger than they already are. Utah is the underdog. This hurts a little, but GO UTES.

RE: Ute Fan

Please explain what a "garaunteed" victory is. I need to expand my vocabulary. Maybe your aunt promised a win.
Funny | 10:47 a.m. Dec. 30, 2008
I read Hawai'i blogs last year and they said the exact same thing all the utes are saying this year. What was the score again? Utah may not be Hawai'i, but Alabama is no Georgia. 'Bama is much better than Georgia last year. I've seen 'Bama play 3 times this year, and they were far more impressive than Utah, even in the BYU win. Sorry, but with a DC who could care less about Utah at the moment but would rather bring a ESPN bottom 10 team to breathe again, the Utes don't stand a chance. 'Bama by 4 TD's.
Defense Wins | 6:24 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Defense wins games. There is no way that Alabama wins by 10 or more. The defense will keep us in the game. Whittingham has done a wonderful job at keeping the guys focused for bowl games. I expect Utah to come out firing and wake up Alabama. Our offensive line needs to give us three seconds per play to allow Brian to pick them apart. I don't imagine our running backs will have big games. If we rush for 140 yards and 250 passing, we'll win this game.
Re: Defense Wins | 7:43 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
140 yds rushing and 250 passing?!? You're dreaming! Your offensive line played better the 2nd half of the season against MWC competition but sucked earlier in the season against terrible Michigan and other BCS opponents. Brian will have to run for his life. Against Michigan he finished with -80 yds on the ground and when he wasn't getting sacked he was getting tackled for losses on the option.
News for Yewt fans: 'Bama's defensive line is boatloads better than Michigan and their secondary is lightyears faster and their linebacking corps is sideline to sideline.
Not only do I not imagine your running backs will have big games, but neither will BJ. Corbin Louks may be the only guy on offense fast enough to run away from the Crimson Tide D. It will be fun to watch.
Good luck with that...
Re: MississippiUte | 8:00 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Well that's easy enough. Just "stuff the run" with your weak defensive line agaisnt an O-line loaded with 1st team All-Americans and future 1st & 2nd round NFL draft picks. When you played the Cougars your best Def lineman was totally neutralized by a freshman offensive tackle. You didn't notice that he was even in the game until he ran away from the line of scrimmage and intercepted that pass late in the game (even then he couldn't outrun the QB and get into the endzone).
You guys think you're quick and physical, well I've got news for you. You haven't seen quick and physical yet.
We'll try and have some cushions ready for when you fall back down to earth, hopefully we can soften the blow.
Blind as a Mole | 8:07 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
BYU Grad 73: I don't care, gimme the big loss. I'll deal with the "damaged credibility". And Hawaii didn't hurt BSU's cred because BSU built their own cred in stone with their gutsy win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl (which was a much better win than the Yewts win over those fiersome Pitt Panthers). The Sooners were actually a credible BCS bowl invitee, not a default invitee like Pitt.
You win on your own merits and you get your own cred, just like BSU did. If the Yewts hadn't gotten lucky in so many of their games (Michigan, OSU, AFA, New Mexico, TCU, etc) and slipped up somewhere along the line, definitely the BCS committee would have invited BSU back.
The day that Yewt fans start rooting for BYU successes is the day I'll consider rooting for the yewts in their big moments.
Re: Alpine Blue | 8:11 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Alpine Blue is not a Cougar fan, but a simple-minded troll attempting to stoke the rivalry fires.

Any true Cougar fan would have have called Kyle Whittingham "KWhitt" or "Kryle" and not used the more polite form of "Coach Whittingham".
And any true Cougar fan would not consider rooting for the Yewts in any event. We don't need them to pave any way for us, we'll pave our own way thank you very much!
Re: MiP | 8:35 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008

--2-7 Toledo beat Michigan in the "Big House" and a D-1AA team beat them there last year. Not an impressive win all things considered.

--You were lucky in the TCU and OSU games because they were clearly affected by the altitude. Had you played them on the road you would have been annihilated. TCU even giftwrapped the game by missing 2 easy FG's.

--You did smash your arch rival

--Don't worry, you won't be the only current undefeated FBS team for long, you won't have a 7 bowl win streak for long and the MWC won't be 1-0 against the SEC for long.

Have a Happy New Year! Roll Tide!
