BYU 2009 Offense Will Roll | 12:32 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
If Collie and Pitta both stay, Max Hall will have Collie, Pitta, Jacobson, George, and Chambers to throw to. With Unga at RB, and Hague and Tonga at FB, this could be an extremely powerful offense, more powerful than 2006!

BYU will roll through the MWC next year, 8-0 in conference play, including a whooping of Utah, who loses all their key offensive starters from this year. Utah will be in rebuild mode, and BYU will by in Overdrive mode, all the way to another MWC Championship!

Go Cougars!
Rhett | 3:44 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
With all of the 4 and 5 star recruits like Collie and Jacobsen that Bronco is recruiting is why in the next few years, the Y will win the NC and probably be invited to join the PAC10
Jacobson is Outstanding | 6:04 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Hopefully Jacobson is able to condition quickly because he was an exceptional receiver his freshman year. If Collie comes back I hope Max learns to spread the ball around in the offseason because Jacobson was a deep threat on any given play like Collie. We'll see what happens, it should be fun.

Promising, but.... | 6:44 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
I'm not the BYU fan that predicts 8-0 seasons in the MWC. It is a tough league. BYU will need to be very, very consistent in order to finish in the top three next year. Utah and TCU will be extremely loaded. The league is very competitive. I'm anxious to see what we have on the table next year and to see if Hall can manage to complete passes against winning programs. If that can happen, BYU will have a great year. They will NOT go undefeated. Looks like we'll have Oklahoma and Florida State. Tough way to start a season. No one will say BYU didn't schedule tough next year....oh, unless Oklahoma and Florida State come out and lay eggs. Then BYU will be criticized for it's schedule ala this year with Washington and UCLA. Who knew.
John | 6:48 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Sorry Rhett, I am a strong BYU fan but your hyperbole on BYU winning a national championship and being invited to join the PAC10 is an example of BYU fans being out of touch with reality.

First, even if BYU went undefeated it would not be in the National Championship game. The big conferences are not going to allow that to happen, period. And anyone that things different needs to get a reality check.

Second, the PAC10 is not expanding and the Sunday play issue makes BYU a non-starter. Couple that with the Prop 8 issue and there is no way BYU will be playing in that conference.

The only way for BYU, and Utah, to ever get into a NC game is either a playoff system or the MWC to get an auto bid to the BCS. That is reality and no amount of wishful thinking will change it.

Bob in line | 7:02 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
In order for BYU to win a national championship they would need to go undefeated in a massively convincing way 2 or 3 years in a row, then maybe!

Outside of that, no chance at all.

And while BYU may have some great offensive skill players for next year they are going to be breaking in 4 new offensive linemen. This means that they will struggle to perform. Sadly, if we do play Oklahoma the first game they will get broke in real fast. I hope it is a great learning experience for them.

Next year should be another decent year for BYU. Both Utah and TCU come to Provo, giving us the advantage. And from there we have the rest of the MWC schedule, so looks to be another 10 win season. If we schedule Oklahoma lets not get too excited, as there is little chance we will win. Who knows though, that's why we play the games.

In any case, I hope Collie and Pita stay and we make a decent season out of it. And we get some speed on defense.

Go BYU!
that's the thing... | 7:25 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
I kind of hope Collie does leave, that way Hall will be forced to look around. Yes, it would be better if Hall just learned to check off, but with Collie out there, why throw to anyone else?
I seem to remember Beck not checking off too much his Junior year either. He came back his Senior year with his head on a swivel.
not 4 or 5 star recruits.. | 8:09 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Collie was a 3 star and Jacobsen was as well (I believe). not saying they aren't great players and have produced more than many 4 and 5 star talents (esp Collie) but they weren't ever rated that high
cougaer | 8:19 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Rhett is a Ute trying to troll and it looks like he did a good job.

No one thinks the cougars are headed for a NC.

really | 8:23 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
I love stories like this about how a blazing fast player is coming to BYU. So much for the disadvantage with the Honor Code & such. No way this kid plays for a random Rocky Mtn region team without the religious affiliation. Kid would be playing Big 12 football if not for that. So much for the "Disadvantage" the Cougars always claim to have in the recruiting game.
AZ Cougar | 8:24 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Austin Collie is one incredible receiver. I wish him all the best should he decide to go pro, and I would certainly understand his reasons for doing so. (It would then actually watch a pro game once-in-awhile.) If he stays, he well could win numerous national awards and increase his stock in the NFL. BYU fans appreciate his work ethic, determination, and leadership. It would be great to see him play his senior year for the Cougars.

Whatever his decision, I will always be an Austin Collie fan.
geezergary | 8:26 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Reality check! #1-The cougs only have one starting O lineman returning. That could be problimatic. #2- Unless the coaching staff figures out a way to put some pressure on the other team's QB and gets some speed at D-back we could finish forth.
Anonymous | 8:34 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Max Hall will have a great year the BY just needs to change the uniform to red. Best player Utah had on the field that day was the mad man. Best player the other team that beat them had was Max. Can't remember the name of the team or that bowl game they played in. Go to the pros Collie 5-7 round draft pick
Hey John, | 8:41 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Can you not tell Rhett is mocking BYU?
wm | 8:41 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Get those chickens out (utah has plenty) and start practicing speed and agility.
Spokane cougar | 8:53 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
I lived in Oklahoma for 12 years and I can tell you that, as much as I love the Cougars, they can't compete with Oklahoma. I think that the Cougs will have an excellent offense, but unless they get some MAJOR speed on defense, there is no hope for them. You can execute all you want on defense, but when you are slow, you will pay the price. I look for BYU to finish second in the MWC next year. We are tops in our conference (almost always THE top), but outside of that we are middle of the road.
Rick | 9:17 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
My comments are ditto to john's above. Out of touch fans begin each year with predictions of BYU winning the NC and moving to the PAC10 only to be disappointed and then turning on the team and coaches by the end of the year. Why not lower the expectation to reality and hope for a great year and root all the way through.

Sure there is hope we could beat Oklahoma and/or Florida State. I remember watching the National Champs Miami being beat by BYU at the beginning of the season in 1990. So there is always hope but keep your feet on the turf.

Head on a swivel | 9:23 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Having your head on a swivel is not usually a good thing. That typically means you are watching your back because the Left Tackle keeps missing blocks. Lets hope that isn't the case.

Next year will be an interesting one that is for certain.

Hey Harmon ...

Isn't Braden Hansen, the lineman from Alta, coming back from a mission this year too ?
NC comments are tongue and cheek | 9:44 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
That's right, unless Rhett is as delusional, his comment was tongue and cheek. He's just playing off the hype machine that (quite a few, although not all) BYU fans turn into during the offseason.

RE: John | 9:43 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
John please stop with the "big conference will not allow it BS!" While it is true BYU would be very hard pressed to get into a NC game, it has NOTHING to do with "Big Conferences allowing it", you need to get in touch with reality, start understanding how the system works before you open you mouth. The "Big Conferences" lost control long ago. IT is Big Money, Private interest,& TV, namely ESPN that control this system. But most of all, what would keep BYU out would be Bias, plain simple regional bias! Just ask USC, Auburn, or Texas how much "big conference helps you.
Offense will be great---defense | 9:46 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
is what will be the challenge----Those that had the speed gave us fits..Bronco will get this fixed. We just have to remember that with the mission thing-----we do not go bad that fast nor do we get good that fast....We have better recruiting than ever before and the future is more that bright...BYU is very close to having a great pipeline filled with great athletes having great depth at all positions..It makes me happy that more and more young men want to represent more than just themselves and a university----The future is going to be great...
Cats | 10:02 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
When BYU won the National Championship in 1984, the BCS was formed as a response to that. Their mission--to make sure that didn't EVER happen again. The national champion can ONLY come from the BCS conferences. BYU (or any other MWC or WAC team) will never be allowed to play in a national championship game. That's not unless the BCS folks get a whole lot more open minded than they are now.

However, the cougars should be great next year and will have a much better road schedule. Utah had a much easier road schedule (so did TCU) and JUST MANAGED to avoid losing any games. When your kicker is scoring more than half your points, you have a lot of problems with your offense. That happened in two games.

I will be in New Orleans and will be cheering for the Utes. However, I think they're going to have an extremely difficult time beating Alabama. The Utes just aren't as good as their record indicates.

GO COUGARS IN 2009.
2009 = Quality 10-3 | 10:35 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
I think most Cougar fans agree that the 10-3 record this year felt more like 6-6. But a 10-3 record next season could actually feel pretty good. If we open with Oklahoma we go 0-1. Florida State is very good and should begin the season in the top 25. TCU will be even BETTER. Utah takes a step back but will be very good and AFA and CSU should be very good and much more confident. We could easily go 10-3, win or tie the conference and have a MUCH better season than we did this season.

If Collie stays, will he be okay with a 700-800 yard season? Hall should (must) take that step John Beck did his seanior season and be able to spray the entire talented cast with passes. In addition to Collie, Pitta, George, and Unga - the talent of Chambers and Jacobson will demand some passes be thrown their way too. And perhaps the real added bonus for 2009 - Tonga returns and IMO is every bit as good as Unga. Are you listening Hall? You will have probably the best overall cast of skilled players at your disposal - learn to use them all!
REALITY | 10:49 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
It's great that Jacobson is back. The problem is so is Max Hall. He will continue with his tunnel vision ways and only throw to Pitta and Collie. Just ask Michael Reed. Unless Hall becomes a team player and learns to check off on his reads, it will be more of the same. The "turnover kid" did nothing to redeem himself in the bowl game. He had some great games against poor to mediocre teams but the big ones he choked in. We could have Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin and Hall would still look only at Pitta and Collie. The boy is a liability.
Promising but... | 10:48 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008

a third place finish and no BCS bowl.

With Bronco at the helm, 10-win season and LV bowl is the best BYU fans can hope for.
re Cats | 11:07 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Yes king Louie did pull out 2 last minute wins. One against Michigan and one against Oregon St (who beat USC the previous week). I don't really think you have much room to be knocking the Utes as you "JUST MANAGED" to barely overcome a team that lost literially every game and lost to a fifth place PAC ten team and struggled against CSU. I bet you guys would have loved to have those 3 missed field goals count in the toilet bowl. Who knows maybe you would have won. One more thing, he hasn't scored more then half our points. If you want to talk about a struggling offense I think we need to look at the war kittens. I saw AF and the big blowout game against UCLA drop a combined total of at least 8 INT's (UCLA had five they dropped and I watched AF drop at least three). As it is TCU, the Utes, and ASU caught quite a few of Maxi's passes. I'd say there's plenty of offensive problems at BYU so save the finger pointing. I do agree that the sugar bowl will be a very tough game for the Utes :)
Dillusional | 11:12 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
It's hilarious how excited all the fans get for the NEXT season. That's all the can talk smack about...until they blow it...and then it's ANOTHER talk about NEXT year. I don't think Rhett was tounge and cheek: it's a perfect example of the reality of what Yners think and say. Just take things one game at a time. Utah isn't preaching NC ever. They're stoked to be in the BCS and to beat their rival. They leave it at that and aren't hyping everything up. They know that Alabama is top notch but nobody is calling for a V necessarily. We should learn from them.
Anonymous | 12:24 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
if he was fast before the season, he'll be SLOW now..

that's why BYU is the SLOWEST team in AMERICA!
Rhett is right | 1:05 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
They are just so dang good. NC for sure.
Y fan | 1:07 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Don't assume BYU will beat the U next year. Whittingham knows how to beat BYU. He did it in Provo in 2005 with a back-up QB and is 2 lucky plays from being 4-0 against Bronco, and 7 for the last 7 years! I am hoping the Y kills the U but I'm never sure when they play Utah.
Overrated Utes | 1:20 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Remind me who the Utes beat on the road this season? No one. They just barely beat OSU and TCU. Congrats on going undefeated, but Utah is not a top 10 team. There are several BCS teams that would blow out Utah. BYU is not as good as we thought we were, but Utah is not as good as everyone thinks.

Next, BYU's biggest problem this season was a soft schedule that we thought was better than it was. BYU needs to lose in order to improve. IF they had not lost two games in 2006 and 2007, they would not have won all those conference games. The coaches are not good enough to keep BYU players from getting carried away.

An offseason where they are not expected to go to the BCS, coupled with games against Oklahoma and Florida State could be a huge difference in 2009.

The big problem that I see next year is that with a new offensive line, Hall will get hit a lot more and in 2007 and 2008, Hall turned the ball over way too much . . but it would have been worse if he had been hit more.
danburtreynolds | 1:25 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
RE: Spokane Cougar

While I agree with you that BYU needs to add speed on defense (I think 99.9% of all people feel that), your statement that BYU is almost always THE top of the conference is a little off base:

Football champs over the past 10 years:
'08 Utah
'07 BYU
'06 BYU
'05 TCU
'04 Utah
'03 Utah
'02 CSU
'01 BYU
'00 CSU
'99 CSU/BYU/Utah

Hardly almost always. Most people forget how good CSU was in the mid 90's to early 00's. This is no longer the WAC of the '80s there are very good footballs throughout the conference. Utah, BYU, and TCU look to always battle for the top spot, but the days of one team consistently being head and shoulders above the rest are gone I think.

Hero of Canton | 1:35 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Oh Dick...your articles always provide a good laugh. Your up and down support of your kitty cats, your love hate relationship with the players...it all makes for some hilarious reading...

Collie better not go to the NFL, he would just embarass the TDS even more. He is slow to begin with and would get worked against an average corner in the NFL. The only reason he had a decent season this year is because the kitties played horrible teams 10 of the 13 times (well, 9 of 13, Northern Iowa was an impressive display of prowess...rofl) and BYWho has no other offensive weapons at wideout so who else are they going to jam it to?

Oh and the entire Ute 'D' is still open...

Who cares who is catching the ball when you have to replace 4 out of 5 offensive linemen? Or is Bronco just going to plug in players like he said about the the defence this year? what a joke.
To Hero of Canton | 4:08 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
So what you're saying is the ewe's much hallowed corners, Smith and McCain will not even be average NFL corners? Because Collie got "worked" by them to the tune of 104 yards. As far as your own daunting schedule, it was the same as BYU's except for three games. Let's see....UCLA a four win team vs. Michigan a three win team. Pretty much a push. Northern Iowa vs. Weber...advantage Northern Iowa. Oregon state at home vs. Washington pre-collapse on the road. Definite advantage Ewetah but the schedule as a whole was not that much different.
Who Cares?? | 4:28 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Who is going to play the O-line. You have Sorenson at Center Reynolds at LT. Welling will fill one of the other positions but who else can play? We may have very good position players but if Maxie can't stay off of his backside it won't matter.

To Cats,

"When BYU won the National Championship in 1984, the BCS was formed as a response to that. Their mission--to make sure that didn't EVER happen again."

You are exactly right, because BYU's National Championship in 1984 was such a TRAVESTY and a JOKE, and EVERYBODY KNEW IT! When you have such a pathetic team as BYU go undefeated and are ranked so high in the polls even though they played NOBODY OF SUBSTANCE, then you KNOW the ranking system is SERIOUSLY BROKEN!

AND EVERYBODY KNEW IT!

This year was further confirmation of the fact that BYU is NEVER as good as their statistics show! NEVER! The HIGHLY OVERRATED Cougars revealed themselves in the bowl game this year against a weak Pac10 opponent. What a friggin' joke to be beaten by Arizona!

So you can play the deceitful game of spinning the BCS system as an "anti-Mormon" thing all you want, but those of us with a BRAIN know better!
re: Please | 5:18 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Do us all a favor and find another website to spew you anti-Mormom venom. Totally out of place.

It is people like you that I love about these comment pages-always cruising various stories looking for an article-any article-in order to make a disparaging remark about the LDS church.

Thanks Dick. Great article about a great young LDS athlete. Look forward to see him paired with Collie in various formations next fall.
re: To Hero of Canton | 5:19 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
In my opinion McCain will not be an average NFL corner, he's too small and simmply not good enough for the NFL. I think that Smith will be an average NFL corner, and if you watched the matchups of Collie vs Smith (when they matched up in man coverage) Collie didn't do too well, so yes Collie will struggle against average NFL corners who have better speed and are just as big if not bigger than him. Collie is a great college receiver but I think he will struggle in the NFL.
Welcome Back | 5:34 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
McKay... now for '09 we already have a receiver better than Collie no matter what happens.
Oregon wolfie | 6:01 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Max Hall needs competition. I thought his second half was below average. I hope he becomes a great qb and wish him well.
Carroll Dragon | 6:29 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
I share Jacobson's HS Alma Mater, although several years earlier - this kid is amazing. Freshman year he got a few looks, but not fully utilized. Don't be concerned if Collie goes - I would argue that Jacobson is better. Faster, better hands... Keep in mind that this kid was Texas 5A (largest classification in TX) Wide Receiver of the Year... that's sitting on top of a lot of good football.

My parents saw him give his "homecoming" talk today... they said he looked crazy thin... hopefully he can get fully conditioned and ready to go vs. the Sooners!
O-protection will still be good | 6:59 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Manase Tonga is a good blocker he will protect well. Tom Sorensen had a good year at Vanderbilt. R.J. Willing, Matt Reynolds, Jesse Taufi, and Terence Brown are the projected starters and they all weigh the line in at 6'5 318 instead of 6'6 326. They will still be great players.
In the Stands | 7:14 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Unless something changes, Utah is going to consistently win the recruiting wars. Whittingham is a quality coach (there was a reason he was BYU's first choice in 2004) and shows no inclination to leave and is making Utah a good destination for both LDS and non-LDS athletes. Over time, Utah is pulling away as a stronger program, a fact that 2004 and 2008 illustrate.

I don't think Utah will get by Alabama, but don't see them getting "rolled" either. They might be down slightly in 2009, but will be back strong in 2010. Whittingham also understands that well coached speed trumps position play. BYU looked awfully slow against TCU, Utah, and Arizona.

You can argue Collie all you want, wins are what matter and BYU went 1-3 against "quality" opponents this season. BYU's win percentage against ranked teams since 1996 is still astoundingly bad, with Utah doubling BYU's wins over that time just this year.

It takes some real luck to go undefeated, but you don't get there way solely on luck either. Utah hasn't proved it is a Top-Tier national program yet, but no one should take anything from their achievements this season. They just might get there.
Hey Anonymous 5:11 pm. | 7:15 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
You said: "You are exactly right, because BYU's National Championship in 1984 was such a TRAVESTY and a JOKE, and EVERYBODY KNEW IT!..." and more of the same drivel ad nauseum, then "So you can play the deceitful game of spinning the BCS system as an "anti-Mormon" thing all you want.."

Umm, Cats never said anything about "anti-Mormon". That was all your invention.

In 1984, BYU beat a team that beat a team that had beaten every other team contending for the title. Every one.

#2 Washington had a chance to play BYU in the 1984 Holiday Bowl, but turned it down to play in the Orange vs. Oklahoma who was bound to that Bowl. BYU spanked Washington the next season, 31-3.

It is well known that the Bowl Coalition, as it was known back then, was created as a reaction to the 1984 season (google it on line).

2008 has nothing to do with 1984.

Who is being deceitful?
To O-Protection 6:59 p.m. | 7:47 p.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Unfortunately, I doubt Manase Tonga will be back next year, otherwise I think we would have heard something about his readmittance by now. I hope I am wrong.

Tom Sorensen had to give up football due to chronic injuries. I wish him well.

Matt Reynolds was stellar at left tackle, giving up just one sack in his very first game and keeping all others, including Utah's Kruger, off of Hall the rest of the year. Matt has an NFL future.

R.J. Willing saw a lot of action pre and post mission and will be solid.

Terence Brown was a part time starter as a frosh and redshirted this year after the mission. He will be in the mix. Garrett Reden has also see a lot of action the past two years. Ryan Freeman saw a lot of time as a Frosh and returns from his mission, but I wouldn't count on him next year.

Hopefully Taufi can fill one of the OL slots.

I am not as optimistic as you are. We will need some of the underclassmen and RMs to step up.

I am amazed to see how much time is wasted by anti-mormon haters in here. Hats off to you and your utes, but seriously, why so much hate? Cougars have some amazing talent, just accept it and be happy for them.
