I'VE BEEN IN THE FOOD BUSSINESS FOR 20 YEARS. (95% of startup resturants fail within the first three years). even today I had somebody tell me that I was doing everthing wrong. these comments on these boards are just about as helpful to football coaches as what I was told today was to me------ meaningless!!

With all these ARROGANT Yewt fans, it is going to be fun posting after the Alabama loss. Somehow I bet that most of them don't show up for the party! Yewts are about as "fair-weathered" as they come.

Remember yewts, there is no such thing as a "moral" victory. Losing by less than 21 points does not cut it.

You want to carry the banner for the MWC, then carry it. But be prepared to take the bad with the good, as BYU has done for the past 35 years or so.

Somehow I think the kitchen is going to be a little too hot for your liking!

If Utah can't sell its tickets to the Sugar Bowl why gripe when you don't get invited to BCS??
And if Utes don't think it is worth it to see their team why would anyone else???
And if noone will pay to see Utah where do you think the $$$ for that big BCS payoff you've been lusting after comes from????
moochers
pretenders
It's going to feel great skinning your hides.
Just hope it shuts up the whining for a few months.

Utah can't sell its Sugar Bowl tickets because deep down Ute fans know they've got no business being there...
It's more like hitting against.. | 8:38 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
good teams with good defense.

The first 6 games were again lowly teams --one that could not win even one game all season.
When they play good team (TCU), excellent team (Utah), they choked.
There was no explanation for the embarrasment against lowly Arizona though.

You would be surprised the wild misconceptions people have about the LDS church. When people think of BYU, particularly teams and people around the country, they tie BYU to Mormons, and hence, BYU football, to Mormons. Therefore, the way BYU football players think, act and, play on the field reflects on the nation's perceptions of the church. So the BYU football players, whether you like it or not, are representatives of the LDS church, and yes, in a way they do collectively represent all 14 million members of it, even if they do not represent you as a person, yes, they do represent the LDS church as a whole. In the same way, (not in the exact same way) a young 19 year old boy with a name tag represents THE CHURCH and not himself, so to does BYU football, or any celebrity, or widely known person or organization with LDS church ties.

At least byu lost to two BCS teams from Utah in the last 4 years. You do have that going for you!

Let's be nice.

I think what Jan Jorgenson said does make a lot of sense. I think the article is quite correct as well. If you spend the first half of the season playing against poor competition you think you've got it made.

The biggest thing I saw in three games they lost (and the three others they easily could have lost) was a reluctance to adjust to the competition. They played more experienced teams the same way they played against the rebuilding teams and got burned. Now that they have gotten stomped three times I suspect they will get the message and will be more careful in their play selection both offensively and defensively.
Go watch the UCLA game... | 12:10 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
...again and you'll see that Max threw about five interceptions that UCLA defenders refused to catch.

There's always a lot of coulda, woulda, shoulda on these boards. But BYU's most dominate game woulda have been a lot different if UCLA would have held onto the those would-be interceptions.
I'm Still Waiting | 12:17 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
BYU Fans, I'm still waiting for the impassioned defense of BYU's 10 year record of 1-20 against ranked teams.

You point to the Miami win 68 years ago. But who in the top 25 have you beat lately?

Cats | 5:19 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
BYU had a much tougher road schedule than other teams this year. I think when they lost at TCU it just took the heart out of them. The expectations had been so high and, at that point, the dream was over. After that, they were just running on automatic pilot.

There's always next year and I think they're going to learn from this year and be really great next year. GO COUGARS.
Figured it out | 8:37 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
For years I thought the BYU coaching staff was about football, but now I've figured it out. The BYU coaches aren't about football, they are about faith. That's great, so the answer is to play other "faith" teams. Then at the end of the season we could have a "Bible Bowl" and BYU would have a good chance of winning.
AZ Cougar | 9:52 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
BYU was OUTCOACHED in each of their losses.

Don't blame it on the players---the Cougars had as much talent as the other teams.
Dave from Baghdad, Iraq | 10:21 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
I have had the opportunity to help defend my country over here in Iraq for the past 21 months. Be grateful for your religious freedoms, liberty, and ability to express your opinions so freely over the Internet. There is a lot more to life than football! I agree totally with the principles and values that Brono is teaching his football team members. At least they are not out being suicide bombers, or killing others, or being common criminals! Come to Iraq and if you want to see what life without teaching values is like!

I hated to see us lose also as a team and as BYU. I have been an avid BYU fan for many years. I know we can win if we have the people, money, and resources.

I think Bronco needs to give up being both the Defensive Coordinator and the Head Football Coach. You can only do one or the other! I think Bronco also works under a lot of constraints imposed upon him by the church Board of Education.

But I think all of us can help Bronco and the BYU Team! We can all help convert great non member football players into the church!

Thanks, brother, for all your work and sacrifice!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Stay safe.

I am in total agreement with "Football SHOULD be 5th"! Unlike football factories like USC, Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma and Florida ...BYU prepares these young men to be responsible citizens. After all, there is life after football. Thank you, Coach Mendellhall!
viewpoint | 4:03 p.m. Dec. 27, 2008
Maybe Mendenhall should pull a BYU-I and drop BYU intercollegiate football in favor of full-contact intramural football.
As for the tough road schedule argument, c'mon, Washington and Utah State hardly are really both bottom 10 institutions this year, and BYU barely beat Washington. How would it have looked for the MTN WEST if BYU had beaten TCU and Utah and yet barely beat a Washington team that came in last in the PAC-10. Speaking of which, How is that Mid PAC-10 Arizona doing these days?
Methinks BYU fan is settling for mediocrity from Bronco by beating up on the bottom tier of the PAC-10 and the WAC instead of demanding meaningful success in bowl games against legitimate opponents.
Reality | 9:43 p.m. Dec. 27, 2008
Utah is "supposed" to get "killed" this Friday. If it happens (I don't believe it will), so what, it was "supposed" to happen. However, if we win (or even nearly win), what then? HAHAHAHA provo would kill to be in this game, get killed, and then profess -- "At least we made it and........" You get the picture. I believe in my UTES and know we are misunderstood, because, it's simple, we have a defense -- See: Kruger is still open!!!!!!!! maxie-baby is still seeing RED, and nothing else!!!!!!!!
bigutefan | 11:02 p.m. Dec. 27, 2008
The reason you are doing poorly is.......because of Bronco. He is out coached most games because he can't "fire up" the troops with his "inside elementary quiet voice". He can't seem to change strategies in a game because he continues to run the same plays over and over without any game adjustments. He comes up with ridiculous themes like "quest for perfection", making "special coins" for the team to carry to show unity, this is not what big time college coaches do. Nor do they take their players to see a movie during summer training, "Dark Knight", instead of practice, which the defense clearly needed all season long. So if we were to rank the Mtn. West coaches including the newbies, that would put Bronco pretty much at the bottom of the barrel. But I am sure if it came to ranking fireside speeches, he is #1! GO UTES!
Reality BYU is weak | 11:58 p.m. Dec. 27, 2008
BYU team this year squeaked by many teams. They never showed any domination. The wall was there all year, they just missed hitting it. Keep talking about how good you are year after year and other MWC teams and Utah will keep running past.
RE: BA | 12:09 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Seriously Zoob do you have anything new to say? I have read the post 3 different times on Ute threads.

Its hard to debate someone who knows nothing about sports. So yes you right Bama will roll my Utes just like you thought BYU would roll the Utes.

Win or lose I will see you on a Ute football thread in January... hmmm when was the last time there was a thread about BYU football in January?

GO UTES!!! Lets get rolled by Bama so the Zoobs can sleep at night, we all know this Zoob is having nightmares from 48-24. He might be having wet dreams about Utes getting rolled by Bama since he talks about it so much.
Notre Dame | 12:30 a.m. Dec. 28, 2008
Is a Catholic chruch, a few of my best friends are devote Roman Chatolics not once have they said the Notre Dame football represents the Catholic Chruch.

So why do so many Mormons think BYU football represents the Church? Lighten up people its only a game.

Notre Dame is a Roman Catholic School so you are basically saying their player's have NO VALUES like LDS players.

Now anyone else take that as offensive or is it just me?

No wonder BYU football is hated so much. Telling others they have less VALUES is just obnoxious and ignorant.

Harvey Unga is the best player BYU has had the last two years. However, he barely got the ball in the three losses for BYU. With Arizona, the game was close and we still kept up with a shaky passing game that was missing our go to tight end. Why? The few times Harvey was given the ball to run between the tackles, he made at least 4 yards, usually 6 or 7. However, half of the running plays were sweeps or off tackle. Harvey runs better up the gut, where the line men can use their advantage of size. Instead, we ran wide (when we ran at all), and the quicker d-linemen easily tripped up the backs. Harvey was under utilized all year. WHY? We use him right and i'm sure we would have won at least one of those three games. Running also keeps the weak defense off the field. Max is above average, and so is Collie. Pita is good when healthy. Unga produces either as a straight ahead runner or catching passes out of the back field. Anae....do you have something against Unga....he is your best player...use him.

Bronco Mendahal is a great coach and a great teacher.

The players learned from the coach that football really wasn't all that important.

Under God, The Church, The University studies, the family the friends, and the fireside chats the night before the games were the most important and somewhere down the line from there, football is important. It's just a game. It's just something fun to enjoy.

This is what the team learned from their coach. They are good learners.

Hopefully next season, we can forgo all the cute sayings like "Totally Committed" "We will never run up the score for anyone-not even the pollsters, and all of those coaches, like the ones in the top ten, are just selfish".
Anonymous | 2:17 a.m. Dec. 29, 2008
There is a lot to be said about praying in the closet. We as a team, and those that coach us should do more praying in the closet without advertising it nationally.

Bronco is a great teacher and the team is a group of great learners.

Perhaps more time should be spent by the coach, coaching football and allow the missionaries and the churches and the University to spend more time teaching the the values of life.

The University, outside of the football team, and the Churches, and the Missionaries don't spend their time teaching the value of football. We should let each department be the master teachers of those things in their own department and stay out of the business of trying to teach outside of our own department.
W. LeGrand Spencer | 12:10 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
We need to make sure our morals are kept higher than those who take the field against us. If championship bowl games were handed out based on the upstanding moral character of a team and coach, BYU plays in January every year. Unfortunately, that is not the case and like the persecution we faced over 150 years ago, it still rears its ugly head on the field every Saturday. For those of you who make fun of Austin Collie's comments, you should try to maintain the same frame of mind day in and day out. A few blown plays by the officials and we're 12-0 and playing in New Orleans. This was the greatest team since 1984. Let's all pause and enjoy the moment.

The wall was called talent.
Ignore him, please! | 1:39 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Now I dont have a heritage-laden name like W. LeGrand Spencer, but evidently I adhere to the same gospel and belong to the same ecclesiastical organization as Br. Spencer, so I feel OK with saying: Come on, man, youre embarrassing me here. There is no requirement stating you have to be a geek in order to be a Mormon!

For you to say your morals need to be higher than our opponents is the height of pride and arrogance. Pride is a primary source of evil in the world, and your statement exhibits toxic levels of it. For you to even raise the specter of 19th century persecution is not only bizarre but disingenuous (i.e., dishonest). Nothing we experience today compares to what the Saints endured in Missouri or Illinois. What rears its ugly head on the field every Saturday is competition between teams with zealous fans reacting to unthinking and insensitive remarks such as yours, LeGrand.

Reality | 3:56 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Reality...the team was much the same in the first half as it was the second half. BYU's defense forcing fumbles in early game (USU, UCLA) was more offenses dropping the ball (bad bad running backs) than BYU defense swarming. A la Dennis Green, "They are who we thought they were." That is, educated football fans could see through the holes even in the wins. Truly, the only disappointing loss was against Arizona. TCU and Utah were clearly better teams.
Legrand's History Lesson | 5:02 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
Since you are now giving us a history association lesson, comparing Mormon history to modern day sports, why not bring up some other LDS moments in history maybe the Miracle of the Gulls explaining how BYUs first BCS bid should have gone. Nope doesnt work. How about extracting the Mormon pioneering spirit as demonstrating BYUs efforts against Utah this year. Sorry Legrand - not hardly at least not this year.

The fact is Legrand, my comparisons are just as nonsensical as yours, considering how modern football has so little to do with past history Mormon or otherwise. And I dont know how you as a BYU fan can honorably claim the Mormon experience as the sole domain of BYU, considering Utahs shared heritage.

So I can only hope you are a BYU troll otherwise you must be serious! Scary thought.
Dear Bronco, | 6:53 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
It's ok to be human first and mormon 2nd. Just because my priorities in life have God above work does not mean that I spend 40 hours a weak at church. Cut down on your 364 firesides a year and start being a football coach first because that is what your are being paid to do. Do the job that you are being paid to do and that will get your right with your #1 priority.
A tribute to the Ute Fans | 9:31 p.m. Dec. 29, 2008
When you go around saying "Oh your team stinks!!" Or "Your team is nothing but a bunch of woosees" I have 4 words to say to you.

Stop talking to yourself.

Think about your football team next year. You lose Johnson, Sakoda, a bunch of people. Now, don't get the wrong impression on this, i'm not saying that Your team is going to "stink" or that they're going to be a bunch of woosees. I'm just saying that you can't go around insulting the other team, when next year, yours won't be any better. But best of luck to Utah next season ;)

There is a lot to be said about praying in the closet.
====================================================

Wow! That is the best statement that I have read in 60 days of blogs. The hymn "Secret Prayer" is another.
I also like this quote (can't remember who said it though): "God will listen when you pray publicly and loudly, but he hears you better in the quiet of your bedroom"

Food for thought for all football fans and players who use religion as a flash point(for good or bad)
Broncos fault | 10:32 a.m. Dec. 30, 2008
This is the job of the coach to right the ship after a loss. Most of this was mental. When the Utes were 1-3 last year they fought back and won a bowl game. These guys lose one game and their season collapses. I put most of it on Bronco for having unrealistic expectations that deemed the entire season a failure once it was no longer attainable. He didn't steer the ship straight, Bad coaching.
Relax. | 10:36 a.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Does anybody really read these things. Relax everyone. Two reasons things are great: 1) Kyle just signed a new contract. 2) He starts playing with his recruits next year. We'll see who's in trouble next year...
Utes turned back 3000 tickets | 11:51 a.m. Dec. 30, 2008
Utes stop making excuses about not selling all your tickets! (economy, etc.)... I saw an article in the paper about a guy who was willing to do anything (begging on 2000 east, wearing a sandwich sign, etc. to collect the $1800 to go to the game!

I even know of loyal BYU fans who are going back to the game and yes, they bought some of the "U" tickets.

BYU has students from all over the country and when they graduate they live everywhere. I'm sick of people saying they sell tickets in the wards!

I live outside of Utah and when BYU has played in our area the "groups" organized to go to the games are done by loyal BYU fans, cougar club members, and NOT at church!

I'm looking forward to going to the Oklahoma game in Dallas and I live in Calif!

If everything about BYU & Utah was equal and a decision had to be made on who to invite to a bowl, BYU would get the invitation. Filling stadiums regardless of who sits in the seats means everything to organizers!

FYI Nevada | 6:04 p.m. Dec. 30, 2008
BYU has a great football program and needs to continue to recruit quality people who can play quality football. They dont need to compromise to get great players.
For those who think Utah or TCU has more talented players you are grossly mistaken. I would put up BYUs team man for man against any other team in the conference.
Admittedly this year BYUs defense was lacking a little speed in the backfield. Im sure Mendenhall will take care of that problem very quickly. It appeared that as the season went on this year, Max Hall began to be less able or willing to look at his 2nd and 3rd receivers and particularly the receivers underneath. It appeared that he was trying to force the ball into double coverage down field resulting in too may interceptions. Hall needed to go to Unga who was open much of the time underneath. Hall made Unga a non-factor this year and I dont see that happening again. When Max Hall begins to spread the ball around next year like he did last year and Bronco fixes the defense, BYU will once again be the Mountain West Conference champions.

In the meantime GO UTAH!!!
Reggie 42 | 9:48 a.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Last season BYU beat Arizona, TCU and Utah. This season they were beaten badly by those teams. My consternation comes from the realization that the coaching staff's of Arizona, TCU and Utah are experiencing growth and progression from a year ago. BYU has taken a step back. Maybe even two steps back.
I squarely place the blame on the BYU coaching staff. And please don't say we had a descent year. We fell well short of having a good year. Byu football was mediorce at best. Bring in coaches who have the knowledge and experience to shore up weak areas.

BYU's Max Hall, top, is sacked by Air Force's Ken Lamendola in Colorado Springs. The win was one of the few bright spots late in the season as the Cougars went 4-3 in their last seven games.
