Two Issues at 2:15 a.m. speaks the truth.

Inferior talent and arrogance will get you beat every time. The real magic is how BYU managed to win as many games as they did.

I simply cannot fathom D1 players failing to put in film room time and what's worse is the coach forgoing allowed practice sessions for the bowl game. What does he expect of players if he fails to put in the time himself?

As Coach Hawkins said ...go play intermurals brother, go play intermurals....

BYU did well against teams with a losing record. Facing good competition they did well for a half and then buckled 3 times in second half. It's one thing to lose- but they were really destroyed in all 3 games. They weren't even respectable games and leaves a bad taste in the offseason. We need to put less pressure on Max, Harvey, Dennis and Austin and develop more talent around them next year.
cougdude | 1:37 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
The O-line lost endurance and were weak in 4th quarters the second half of the season. Max was not getting good protection late in games. I attribute this to loss of focus/strength- these guys should be conditioning all season and it looked like they lost gas the critical 3rd and 4th quarters. When Max gets hit- you can count on 3 and out very quickly.

Lets not substitute prejudice and emotion for rational thought. BYU had an excellent offense this year and a poor defense. The offense managed to pull out some victories despite the fact that defense was busy handing out points. Look at the stats for offense. BYU was at the top.

The defense had no pass rush and even mediocre QB's were able to sit back and pick apart the secondary. The strength of TCU's team was clearly an excellent defense. They did not play that well on offense against BSU, but they won anyway thanks to a superior defense.

Max Hall is not to blame. It is simplistic and stupid to blame every loss on the QB. If the defense had played well against any of the teams in the second half of the season then BYU would have won in a walk. As it was they struggled with bad field position and the requirement to continually score to keep pace.

In 2007 the offense scored 17 against Utah and Max Hall is a hero. Why? Because the defense allowed 10. In 2008 BYU scores 24 against Utah and Hall is a goat. Why? Because the defense allowed 48.

You know what folks, you're right. BYU did nothing wrong all year. Nothing.

They don't need to change any thing at all. Stay the course. Please! :)

"This is the reason why the MWC will never be considered for an automatic bid"

REALLY? So the reason the MWC won't ever be considered for an auto bid is because our bowl game in New Orleans, amidst a horrendus economy,is not sold out?? Hope you didn't go into debt for you BYU education...It wasn't worth it..

Cause I thought it had something to do with the fact that Utah is the only team in the conference (OK maybe TCU) That can make it to the BCS and carry the conference on a National Stage.

Nice showing in Vegas, thanks for your help in convincing the Nation that our conference is NOT overrated.
An observation | 1:53 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
It's 1:57 p.m. as I type this comment. There is a story about Utah football and one about BYU. The Utah story has 17 comments and the BYU story has 54, many by self-proclaimed Utah fans chastizing BYU and everything associated with it. I guess it really is true. There is no such thing as a Utah fan--just BYU haters.
Bobby Jones | 2:00 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
To true BYU....do you know how far away New Orleans is? Do you know how bad money is right now? Do you know how much New Orleans does not care if 17,000 sober Utah fans come to their city? Embarrassed? Hardly, Utah is playing one of the best teams in college football today. BYU played one of the worst teams in the PAC 10 in one of the weakest years ever. That is embarrassing.
Geoff | 2:03 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
TCU thumped BYU, but the Cougars shoud have beaten the Utes and Arizona. They din't and they fell short of their potential. When coaches say that they take full responsibility it's another way of saying, "We blew it," but I'm a big man to say it was all my fault.

Bronco had better not let his assistants drag us to mediocrity. Make the tough personnel changes. Loyalty to assistants is not an admirable quality if they cost us games.

Saying that football is fifth is down right silly. When they practice and play it had better rank first.

honest observation | 2:07 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
Coach Mendenhall is a average coach, not a great coach. His in game management is below average, I feel is preperation is above average. The recruiting is ok, but he needs to work on his arragance as he shouldn't say BYU can get anybody in the state it wants and the reason BYU turned things around is because of the friday night firesides. Remember, Mendenhall is 2 lucky plays from being 0-4 against Utah! I still feel he will get better as a coach as the years go on

Cougars will roar back to the top with a crushing performance over the utes in the regular season finale.

Nope....not BYU haters..most people are just tired of BYU whining
QB Coach | 2:29 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
Just an observation from watch the last couple of games. Coach Doman has been flying under the radar. He has not had his quarterback prepared. His inability to help Hall improve and make adjustments is apparent to me at least. But he is young and maybe learning how to be a QB coach on the fly. But what do I know other than being an observer. Also, I am not a Utah native and not a BYU grad, but it is interesting to see all the Ute fans on this message board do all the whining when they are have a such a great season. Shouldn't the Ute fans be happy with their success without having to grind BYU. Boy there is some hatred there. What is this all about?
Same old story | 2:39 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
There you go again...hating on BYU. Say something about your team and how good they are instead of how BYU is a bunch of whinners and we're always over-rated (whine, whine, whine, and whine some more) Utah played great this year and ya'll should be proud of your boys, not proud that BYU boys didn't do so well.
to 2:12 pm | 2:45 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
I hate to tell you, but every team is critical of the factors that causes that team to lose or not perform to their potential. Wasn't last year that every Utah fan was calling for Whittingham's head after the UNLV lost? You just can't admit that you're not a true Utah fan, you just love to hate on BYU for whatever pyschological reason you may have. My advice to you is to get over it and start praising your team and the future you'll have.
If only Bronco would read this | 2:49 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
Its embarrassing!!!!!! Not that we limped home, but how we speak.
Bronco has said:
-we have 'higher priorities' than football,
-our players are higher caliber in character,
-he didn't watch the TCU-UU game because it was his 'date night',
-athletes arent our #1 priority,
-he doesnt spend extra time in the office because he is a family man.
It sends the wrong message and it is arrogant. The scriptures are littered with pride, boasting, and self righteousness, and it is never good. Bronco, shut up about how your faith drives you. You try too hard to say you/program are unique. Let your actions speak louder than your corny talk. If I hear you say manifest one more time in a football context Ill throw up!
Your players get mixed messages. Work is hard and sometimes things get out of balance, but that isn't always bad (it just shouldn't stay that way indefinately).
You misspeak when you say talent isn't the 1st thing you look for. It should be, but there are critical additional factors that play into who you really recruit. To say athleticism is #1 hurts your players and you not to mention it makes you look silly!
Utes 1st AGAIN! | 2:53 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
Well, it appears that the Utes are first again. The first to honor an apostle of The Lord with his initials on their helmets at a BCS BOWL. . . The IRONY!!

Go Utes!
Re: Bobby Jones | 2:55 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
"Do you know how much New Orleans does not care if 17,000 sober Utah fans come to their city?"

There aren't even 17,000 sober fans that show up at the RES on any given Saturday are there?

If you expect to be a national program with a storied history, then your fans have to follow. BYU and TCU would have sold those 17,000 tickets and as many more as they could get their hands on. Have the Utes ever played in a bigger game? It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and no one wants to be there?

You can attack the Cougs all you want, but this is just another example of why Utah is a second tier program with a couple of good years every once in a while.
Oregon Ute! | 3:02 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
To all the fans of both BYU and Utah who think it's fun for the other team to have a poor year (like BYU did this year) - you need to understand that the BEST thing for BYU is Utah having a great season and the BEST thing for the Utes is for BYU to have a great season. BYU's success (last century) pushed Utah up to match their great seasons. Now the shoe's on the other foot and TCU's and Utah's success will push BYU on to bigger and better things. I'd love to see BYU come into the Utah game undefeated every year - and then lose to Utah. I appreciate the quality of both the players and coaches for both BYU and Utah - it's some of the Jr. High fans that make me sick!
akk | 3:07 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
Too many BYU fans just don't get it. That's why you are so easy to hate. Mendenhall is an average coach who does an average job. He says what he thinks his bosses want to hear. Too many BYU players and fans ARE arrogant and think they are better than the rest of us. News flash you are not... You can out spend teams on a regional basis... but in the end you get outcoached and outplayed... get over yourselves.
Ernest T. Bass | 3:17 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
Most seasons arrogance is a huge problem for byu. They never admit their opponent has beaten them, instead they disrespect their opponents by saying that they just beat themselves.
Considering the team takes on the personality of the coach, arrogance is going to be a real problem for byu for the forseable future.
They don't even use all the practices allowed and never even prepare for a team based on the team's strengths and weaknesses.
"The best is yet to come" -BM.
It did for Utah but is not likely for BYU.
Bronco's best team was built by another coach, Gary Crowton.
They'll keep being arrogant and not understand why they don't ever beat good teams, as proven by the bowl record and their record against top 25 teams.
....Hey True BYU..... | 3:20 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
Until BYU gets invited to a BSC game, please hold your comments about how Utah handles its invitation.

As for bowl games Utah, has carried this conference both in terms of results and financial considerations. So please don't embarrass yourself by speaking of things of which you know nothing.

As far a an auto bid for the conference, if BYU wants a BSC bid they can earn it like Utah has. Utah has been invited to more BSC bowls than most teams in BSC conferences. Alas, sadly for you BYU has never been able to perform to the standards of a BSC participant.

All about the Y | 3:25 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
I can't speak for all BYU fans, but I think it's the best compliment when you have a whole fan base who hates your team. Just like the Yankees, Lakers, Cowboys, etc. they have huge followers who love to hate them. Why is that? Cause they're the best. I'm not saying BYU is the best of the best, but we sure are the best in the state. Keep on hating U fans, makes us even more arrogant.
Is anyone really surprised? | 3:31 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
That the Utes can't get 17,000 fans to New Orleans? In most years when they are predicable medicore, they can't even get 17,000 fans to drive across SLC in the snow on a Saturday?
Southern Cougar | 3:35 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
10-3 sounds great, but it was a very disappointing season. I wonder if things have just gone to some players' heads (Hall, for one). It just didn't look like the team played with any heart the last 1/2 of the season, and I wonder where their desire has gone. It's hard to believe that just 2 years ago we were riding the top of the world after the win over Oregon. I expected there'd be ups and downs, but didn't expect that BYU would lack motivation or that the team would get their feathers ruffled so easily. In many ways, I wonder if the problems are more of an issue with psyche than they are with skill. My Cougars, please, please tell me that you will learn from this experience!

Utah can't sell 17,000 seats to one of the two biggest games in their history and yet BYU gets to play Oklahoma next year in the brand new Dallas Cowboy billion dollar stadium? I wonder who has more respect in the nation?

'Dart Down the Lane', BYU will never be a school that is 24/7 football, and if that's who you want, it's time to find another school to cheer for. I don't expect nor do I hope BYU will ever go that way, all I want is to see some heart in their play...which was lacking this year. I think a lot of the players need to take a good, long look in the mirror and figure out what they're about, along with the realization that just because you step on the field doesn't mean you win, doesn't mean you walk on water (i.e., get over yourselves), and doesn't mean that you're going to secure the MWC. The conference is getting better, BYU, you've got to step it up in all areas, both in and out of the geme.
NCBYUFAN | 4:25 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
For years we have heard about the superiority of BYU because of the return missionaries being older and more mature. (Except when they lose.) Perhaps a 18 to 21 year old who has not had the missionary experience would be a better player. Reason #1.Coachability. #2. No family distractions #3.Hasn't learned that the coaches aren't always right. #4. Doesn't know his limitations. There are alot more but I shall cease and decist. BYU alum and fan till I die...then if hey have football...aaaa never mind.
Re: Ernest T. Brash | 4:28 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
I'm glad that us hypocritical Y fans have someone who is so righteous and knows all the right answers to everything to lecture us on humility. I mean we are pretty arrogant, it's time that we follow coach whittinghams truly perfectly humble example.

Get real, the first thing Coach Mendenhall ever does after a win or loss is to give credit to the other team, and what they did well. Then the time comes to acknowledge what BYU did to win or what they could have done to win. The post game always evaluates both sides of the story. We're not as closed minded as most Ute fans portray themselves to be. BYU, like most teams, acknowledges what they do well and what they can improve on. They don't make dumb claims like our receiver will win the heisman when he's a freshman, our running back will have more moves than your running back will EVER have, and we are DEFINETLY talented enough to play in the national championship. Not to mention we don't kick onside kicks when we are up by 40+ points.

Honestly, if BYU is arrogant and pompous WHAT DOES THAT MAKE UTAH? Seriously don't kid yourself.

Re: "fan support," Is anyone.... | 4:45 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
...really surprised"

What is your connection between the Utes selling 17,000 tickets and BYU scheduling a football game with Oklahoma, a game that BYU will likely get slaughtered at? By the way, any team would have a hard time selling tickets and going 2,000 miles to a game right now in this economy. Do you think BYU would have had 17,000 fans go there from Utah? Fat chance. There wouldn't be more than 1,000 or so fans from Utah who would actually fly or drive there. BYU would get the members of the LDS church in the Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi areas to all buy up the tickets and travel the 2 or 3 hour drive it takes to New Orleans. They've done that in every other far-away bowl game that they've been to. BYU has a huge advantage in that regard, young Kooger fan.

Your jealousy at the Utes' success this year is sickening.

JAS | 4:59 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
2009 Points to focus on

Harvey: Run straight to the end zone. Stop dancing at the LOS

Max: Stop throwing interceptions and fumbles. Look off receivers. Dont force a play or the ball. Learn to become more patient and be a strong leader on the field. Someone has to be the man on the field.

Coaches: Get the team ready to play and stop making excuses after every game that you did not have the team ready to play. The team lacks the killer instinct on the field. Lets play smash month football on Saturday.

There are many defending the 10-3 season. This was a GOOD season but not a GREAT season. This team had the potential to be great. I went to every home game and to AF, Utah and the LV Bowl. This years team was only ready for one game, the UCLA game. If BYU would play with the same passion and fire they did for the UCLA, we will have a great team.

I think Bronco is a great coach and belongs on the sideline many more seasons to come. I also think the Cougars need some fire and passion before next season.
Re: Bobby Jones | 2:55 p.m. | 5:05 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
What you fail to admit is that for Utah fans to follow their team, they have to traverse 2/3 of the country, rent hotel rooms, rent cars, and budget enough money to eat. It is costly.

Had BYU gone to the Sugar Bowl, the same number of fans from Utah County would have made the trip but BYU would have sold their allotment of tickets. Why? Because BYU fans live in every venue their team could play in. There are members of the church in NO who would go to the game and enable BYU fans to brag about their ticket being sold.

Utah County people, what makes you so lovable is the way you can spin a good story without letting details and facts get in the way. BYU's following can be easily explained.

Maybe next year BYU will be responsible enough to actually not embarrass the MWC by getting blown out by a poor team from a not so great conference. I'll be there are a good number of BYU fans who wish they had not spent the money to go to Vegas.

No jealousy whatsoever brother. They point is BYU fills stadiums and Utah can barely fill their 45,000 seat stadium. Looks like jealousy is all yours, since you brought that up. Keep living the dream...keep living the dream...
re true BYU | 5:16 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
So you're telling me you spent literally thousands of dollars to cruise down to Vegas? Really be realistic here. Getting to the game and getting accomadations costs over $1500 as it is. That's just for one person and not necessarily counting in tickets to the game, food, and fun. Until you war kittens have to make it to a real bowl game that's more then five hours away give it a rest. If you really want to put it in perspective take a look at this. There were more Ute fans in Tempe AZ (where we had to go for the first BCS bowl game, you wouldn't know what it's like) Then there have been BYU fans at any of the 4 Vegas bowls. Don't be a hypocrite and get a life. As for the rest of your comments I agree.
Anonymous | 5:18 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
Salt Lake County people, what makes you so lovable is the way you can spin a good story without letting details and facts get in the way. All we're trying to say is that we have fan support from all over the country. That's saying a lot about a university. You're the ones who put all that in our mouthes. Just as "is anyone...." said, "You're jealousy at the (Y's success over the past 30 years) is sickening."
re fan support | 5:29 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
It's funny you can try to bash us. Couple of points to consider. It's easy to fill a stadium when the people there aren't all even fans (what's up with the old ladies knitting at the game anyways). If all ute fans had youth groups and about six kids they were taking that would fill a lot of seats. I like how you left those points out. As far as filling the stadium... I saw RES filled with red and one tiny sliver of blue in the southwest corner. My drive from south mountain isn't that much farther then the drive from Lehi or AF or Alpine so what's the deal?
bowl games? | 5:32 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
Are you really talking about fan support for the Vegas bowl? Vegas bowl is a middle of the pack bowl game and yet BYU sells that baby out every year we go(and yes it has been 4 straight years). So all you Utah fans who think that's a small feat, wasn't last year you went to San Diego and barely had 10,000 fans go? Stop trying to argue about fan support. BYU wins. Doesn't mean that BYU is better, because Utah proved that on the field this year.
Strength & Conditioning Right ! | 5:34 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
This was the weakest team ever in D1 football. There just was hundreds of examples of BYU players being over-powered by the other side of the ball. Coach Olmer should be fired. Even when players are trained by him at all they get hurt. $40,000,000 training facility. Let's get these weak wet noodles lifting heavy and explosively for once! Weakness is a glaring concern to trained eye Cougar fans.

If we could just stop beating ourselves, we would be undefeated.
I can't remember the last time I thought that the other team was actually better. Byu just makes mistakes to loose.
Jerry Thompson | 5:42 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
BYU definitely had some issues. I believe it was a combination of Max Hall and Robert Anae. Max wasn't taking care of the ball and Anae needed to be more innovative in his play selection, but I have issues with Jeff Call saying that the "Y" simply played against bad teams the first half of the season. For instance: New Mexico beat Arizona early in the year and barely lost to Utah. Wyoming lost to the major Mountain West teams handily, however, they beat Tennessee. Tennessee beat Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Mississippi State in the SEC. Vanderbilt beat the Mississippi Rebels in Oxford, and Jeff should know who Mississippi beat at Gainesville. It was none other than the Florida Gators who went on to defeat the Alabama Crimson Tide. That's right Mr. Call. Wyoming went into a hostile stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee in front of 90,000 screaming Vols and were victorious. I know this may mean nothing to you, but it downright miraculous to me, and it's definitely a feather in the cap of this 'bad team' as well as the Mountain West Conference.

Re: fan support, Anonymous | 6:00 p.m. Dec. 26, 2008
The fan support you're both talking about is from members of the LDS church throughout the country. Yes, that is a huge advantage. If there is a bowl game in, say, the Bay Area, the Church can offer tickets to those Church members living in that area and those members can go to the games with only having to pay for the cost of the tickets. In this Sugar Bowl game there are 6 of us who are spending $2,000 apiece for flight, hotels, food, etc. How many of you BYU fans living in Utah would do the same? BYU fans from Utah don't travel to the far-away games. BYU relies on local church members living in the area of the bowl game to buy tickets. That's no secret. It's a huge advantage for BYU. As for the 45,000 Utah fans, they make twice the noise as the 60,000 fans at Edwards stadium. I know, I attended games at both places this year.

And to "fan support," we will keep living the dream. It's called 2 BCS bowl appearances in the last 5 years. How many BCS games has your team been in?

Watched the USU-BYU game on BYU-TV internet feed.
They did a puff piece on Max Hall. Every person stated that Max Hall may seem arrogant, but that it was just confidence based on performance.
When every person, (Bronco & assorted players) mention Hall's arrogance, errrr, "confidence", that may be the source of some of the issues. HMMMM.

BYU's Max Hall, top, is sacked by Air Force's Ken Lamendola in Colorado Springs. The win was one of the few bright spots late in the season as the Cougars went 4-3 in their last seven games.
