BYU Fans are Dishonest | 12:10 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
"Utes' Sugar Bowl run is year's top sports story"?!?

Gee, I thought BYU's "quest for perfection" and their victory over Northern Iowa was the top story of 2008.
Where is Blueorange | 12:31 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Where are you blueorange? We miss your brilliant wit in defining how superior the WAC is and how much better Boise State is than Utah. Sigh...
Funny... | 12:33 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
If the Utes undefeated season and upcoming trip to the Sugar Bowl is the #1 story of the year, who is going to tell that to the Deseret News? So far the Oh-so-very-Blue-season-of-imperfection has taken the lead at a 10:1 story ratio on this site and the printed pages on a lot of doorsteps every day.

If the story is #1, maybe we should see a few more stories being published about it. Just a thought.....

I like your picks for the top stories of 2009. Poor poor Cougars, couldn't happen to a nicer bunch. Let's hope your 2009 list includes UTES FIRE JIM BOYLEN, as he is a horrible coach, a clown on the sidelines, that has a temper of an ape, and is down right embarassing to watch. When Chris Hill wakes up and fires this mess, only then will the Ute faithful return and Ute b-ball will once again be a dominant force. Until then, it's just football, Jazz, slumping athletics in Provo, and a pathetic attempt at being a head basketball coach at Utah. FIRE BOYLEN! I bet Hall is still throwing interceptions in 2009, ha! Rise and shout, you got NOTHING!

In the close loss, Boise State at least proved they could provide a serious challenge to the Utes or TCU; unlike BYU.

Diss the Boise State Fans all you want but the BSU TEAM is a class organization and a worthy opponent.

Go Utah! Thump Alabama and stick one "right in the eye" of the BCS National Championship game.
Anonymous | 2:03 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Boise State is quite likely better than Utah. They just don't happen to be better than TCU who is the best team in the MWC - outplayed Utah all the way!
Is BYU #1 story? | 2:10 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
BYU was more disappointing than Utah was surprising. BYU did all the talking in fall camp, but Utah did the talking on the field week in and week out.
Matt | 5:57 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
As awesome as this season has been, everything my intellect can muster tells me that Alabama is poised to destroy us. I just hope the season doesn't end with an embarrassing blowout loss.
Sad | 6:31 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
If all that is going to be printed and ran in these comments is running others down the Deseret News should shut this section down. I for one am sick and tire of all of the bashing. There are many fine schools out there and should be looked upon with respect for everything they accomplish and not just gloating about there sports programs so some of you can look like the narrow minded fools you are.

Let fans go to their own message boards to show off their intelligence.

This sections stokes the fire of the rivalry more than it needs to be.

These comment sections bring out the absolute worst in some people. Rather than congratulate the winners and enjoy the shared success of all athletic teams in the state, these forums have become nothing but a bunch of sophomoric jibes against fans of other teams. A few sad losers can make an entire organizaton look trashy. (See above for examples).

Your anonymous bashing of another team shows your total lack of class and self esteem. If you can not say anything nice about someone-perhaps it is better not to say anything at all.

Congratulations to all the athletic teams in Utah for excellent seasons and the collective glory you bring to the entire state of Utah.

May 2009 be even better for all of our teams-Jazz, Utes, Cougars, Aggies, Real, Wildcats, Blaze (if they survive), UVU, SUU, Dixie, Snow, et al.

BlueBoy | 9:05 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
CSU and TCU held up their part of the MWC save-face time. BYU didn't. Same-o, same-o for them.

Now it's time for Air Force and Utah to not get embarrassed. I don't expect AFA to have much trouble with Houston, but Utah could look like Hawaii did last year. Hope not.

Utah has the opportunity to do to Alabama (and the BCS) what Boise State did when they beat Oklahoma. I'm not as confident of this one as I was that one. It might look more like TCU's game--close and a nail-biter, which would be okay, win or lose. Just don't get blown out, Utes!

So far, except for BYU's flub, this bowl season has been fun to watch. In HD, no less! (Yea ESPN, boo the mtn.)

Yewtah Frat Boys | 9:10 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Glad to see the frat boys at Utah had the chance to write an article this Christmas. Apparently "Peace and Goodwill toward men" is interpreted as an invitation to cheap shots and truth-bending up on the "Hill". In that spirit, I hope Yewtah gets blown out by Alabama and that the state of Utah continues to decline in relevance so that the people of Utah will finally come to the realization that your home is a backwater that nobody else cares about. Merry Christmas.

Props to Kyle for taking the "embarassment" hit for the conference this time.

Utah will be exposed for the mediocre team that it is.

Bama got cheated this year, they deserved a test, and got an open note quiz.
Cats | 9:43 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Man, there are some petty, mean, immature people on this blog. Apparently, the only way some of you can feel important is to make nasty, childish remarks about BYU? What are you guys, ten years old?

As a loyal Cougar, I wish the Utes well in the Sugar Bowl. I'll be in New Orleans on the night of the game. We'll be staying just down the street in the French Quarter. We just might mosey on over there and cheer for the Utes.

Merry Christmas to all. Here's hoping that everyone can put these PETTY, CHILDISH rivalries aside and learn to love and respect each other.

I have just one wish and that is for the point spread to stay at 10 1/2pts Alabama gives Utah. I will recieve my Christmas, just a week later. Utah will get beat by 25 plus points GUARANTEED!

Bama superiority? | 10:21 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
I know it's easy for the jealous TDS fans to jump on the sour-grapes BAMA bandwagon, but before you do, consider one simple thing...WHO has alabammer (southern drawl) beaten this year? A dissapointing #16 Georgia team on par with sorry TDS? IMPRESSIVE!!! (Remeber, UTAH knocked off top 10 TCU). It is difficult to compare the SEC and MTN West, but a good place to start is WY vs. TN. Lowly, lowly, lowly WY beats TN at home? HOW EMBARASSING for the SEC!!! Enjoy watching the UTES win bluegar fans, and please tell Maxie to stop throwing footballs at me when I wear red!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Cats | 11:01 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
I believe that you may have nailed the bashing issue by outing these guys as immature ten-years olds.

Only a 10 or 11-year old would get such a kick out of bashing BYU. Just grow up kids.

As a Cougar fan, I too will be rooting for Utah against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

No matter how you slice it, we will bask in your reflected glory or share your collective sorrow.

All the best to Cougar and Ute fans in the new year!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Merry Christmas Cougars | 11:07 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
There, I said it. (It wasn't hard at all).

I have been a hater here at times. Not today. I have enjoyed watching the Cougars play this year. BYU has reminded me of a lot of recent Utah teams. You know what? It is OK to be good and not great some years. I have loved watching Utah in the little bowl games as much as the BCS games. They still are my team, and I love them no matter what.
True blue cougar fans should fell the same way.

GO UTES! Beat Bama!
alabama reality | 11:07 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Everybody is putting Bama on this grand high, here is my assessment. Like last year, bama would be barely above .500. The sec was very down this year and beating clemson was not that impressive. They barely beat kentucky as well. They don't have fantastic wins, they were fortunate the sec stunk this year and it was top heavy with Florida. LSU, are you kidding? Their QB situation was bad this year. Bama just has a big named coach and history backing it up so far. They are a good team but far from as good as people say they are.

re: BYU Fans ...| 12:10 | 11:58 a.m. Dec. 25, 2008
An article about the Utes' Sugar Bowl run being this year's top local sports story,

and the first post from a Utah fan?...

another lame post about BYU.

No matter what Utah does, some of their fans will always be looking over their shoulders to see how Utah compares to BYU.

Since you were wondering, this year's Utah team is on par with BYU's 1979 team, undefeated at the end of the regular season.

Once a little brother, ALWAYS a little brother!
2008 | 12:06 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
In this year's "disappointing" 10-3 season, BYU won more games than all but 4 Utah teams, in their 116 years of football.
Mean spirited folks | 12:14 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Thats why they would be on this board spewing mean spirited comments even on Christmas....no one should be surprised...I suspect it reflects their character
Yner fans still making excuses! | 12:33 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Why do the Yner fans (2008 12:96) feel bound to be apologists for BYU football. The "QUEST FOR PERPLEXION" is complete. Go to the Big Blue Time-machine and take a trip back to 1984 and the great defeat of a 6-5 Michigan that couldn't earn a trip to the Rose Bowl - or - move on to "Next Year" where most of you want to live anyway. Alabama will be the toughest opponent Utah has faced in years and a justifiable heavy favorite. But stranger things have happened (1984).
Sorry Cats & Thanks Cats | 12:54 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
But the notion that it is only Utah fans bashing BYU reveals that you have not been reading carefully. Much of the immature commentary comes from jelous BYU fans who can't stand the fact that Utah rose above them. The bashing is on BOTH sides, but has been especially strong from the BYU bunch lately.
Re: 12:33 | 1:02 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
It seems that a lot of U fans know more about the '84 BYU team and their bowl opponent than many Y fans. What else would you expect from 24 years of jealousy? Eventually BYU will make a BCS game (maybe 2009). How does it feel to know that the U will NEVER win a national championship in football? How does it feel to know that the U will NEVER win a Heisman Trophy or any other major national award (your best player couldn't even win best kicker/punter)? These are things the U will never achieve. It's only a matter of time until the Y makes the BCS.
Let the comebacks begin.
Quest for Perfection | 1:14 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008

At least the blue boys got the Wii package from LV bowl --after they embarrasing the MWC conference with the loss.

Re: 12:33 | 1:57 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
You are the type of jealous BYU fan 12:54 was referring to. You can't stand Utah's success. It drives you mad. The fact is that BYU would NEVER have been voted #1 in 1984 under the current system. If Utah will NEVER achieve the honors you list, WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE BYU IN THE FUTURE???
Stew Morrill? Jaycee Carroll? | 2:01 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
How you can leave off both Stew Morrill's achievement of reaching the all-time wins record at USU AND leave off Jaycee Carroll's acheivement earlier this year of becoming USU's all time leading scorer is beyond me.

At a time when Utah has been firing coaches for ineptitude and BYU has had to rebuild from some lean times under Cleveland, Stew is a model of consistency and brilliant coaching. His teams constantly over achieve, and he has only lost 1 game in Logan to BYU/Utah powerhouses during his 11 years at USU.

And finally, Jaycee Carroll's career at USU was nothing short of spectacular. He leaves as the all-time scoring leader. He passed Danny Ainge and Keith Van Horn's individual marks within the state of Utah. He was among the national leaders in scoring, FT%, 3-pt %, and was the WAC player of the year.

Deseret News, you really blew it by not even mentioning these two acheivements, which are school records not likely ever to be broken again. I can guarantee that if BYU or Utah had a player or coach come even close to these accomplishments, they would not have been left out.
Anonymous | 2:53 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Utah the Gonzaga of the gridiron? Nonsense! Maybe Boise is the Gonzaga of the Gridiron. Utah is the Utah of the gridiron, a powerhouse in its own right that consistently succeeds vs. the BCS, ranked teams, and in the post season. Utah has arrived. Utah is no Cinderella; Utah is Pac 10 ready.

BlueKorean | 3:39 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
SoCalUtefan - you must be one of those fans that break out their Utah shirts only during a winning season. You start out beating the worst Michigan team in 30 years and scrape by at New Mexico and TCU; you are looking at a whooping in the Sugar Bowl.

BYU is doing a great job considering the handicaps that Utah doesn't have to deal with; Utah has a low, low entrance policy and doesn't have to worry about the Honor Code. BYU's record over the past three years is impressive considering the hoops a player has to jump through to be admitted.

Two successive undefeated, meaning they beat Utah, conference titles and a 10-3 record this year. Not bad in my book.
Morrill-Carroll | 3:59 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
They're both included in the other story that goes with this one. But you are correct - a BYU or Utah player/coach will never become the all-time winngest/highest-scorer at Utah State.
ProvoDad | 4:45 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
If some of you don't like the post then don't read them. I think It's time Deseret news gave the Utes a little more respect. Not everyone in this State is a BYU fan. Are you afraid that the Church will get mad if you give Utah as much coverage as you do BYU..Don't become the Daily Herald of Salt Lake. I don't see how this can be the # 1 story when you publish 8 BYU articles to Utahs 2.
Wittingham not Willingham | 5:23 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Seattle Ute: the only way Utah or BYU are ready for the PAC-10 is if U-Dub and WSU keep lowering the bar. Another season like this one and Skyline High School is PAC-10 ready.

At least Utah has two winning programs.
Ridgerunner | 5:54 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
As a BYU alum, I wish the Utes well in the Sugar Bowl. I know from my personal experience that if the Utes do win, my life here at the office will be made untolerable by the Utes I work with.
Re: Blue Korean | 5:58 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008

If you're proud of (or content with) 10-3 season that included a LV bowl loss to lowly Arizona, then at least you're a practical BYU fan since this is the best BYU will be --around 10 wins and LV bowl a season.
I am always a Utah Fan --including Utah baskettball fan. I don't jump in only when they are doing great.

One last point, I hope that you're still wearing your "Quest of Perfection" t-shirt...

Much as I try to like BYU | 6:03 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
the fans make it impossible to do so with such dribble coming from the likes of the Yner fans dissng the Utes even though they got spanked. Sorry cougs, the record in total wins, bowls, undfeated seasons oand head to head match ups all favor the Utes some of them by a huge margin. So little brother cougers, just expect your place as the other Utah Team. Hey second isn't bad, its better than third (like this year) :)
RE: BlueKorean | 6:38 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
I agree, BYU's doing a great job. . . at being a dominating team in the MWC that often struggles out of conference. Nice excuses. Last time I heard them was...the early 90s. You BYU guys are ready to take on the world after consecutive 11-2 seasons, but fall short in your "Quest for Perfection" and the "entrance standards and honor code" are what you reach for to help the bitter pill go down.

Utah might get blown out, or maybe they'll surprise the world. Who knows. But, they've now done twice in five your years what your team set as its goal this year; a goal your Cougars haven't come close to attaining.
Re: Re: 12:33 | 6:51 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
HA HA HA! Did you even read my post. BYU's future will be fine. The Y will eventually get to the BCS (which I thought I stated pretty clear). The U will never have the trophy that we do (NC, by the way).
Hey UTES! | 7:48 p.m. Dec. 25, 2008
Maybe you guys should worry about beating 'Bama before you run your mouths! TCU should be playin!
